<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
aantal schijven ontstaan.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.1
is.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
Andere
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Reading device for information carriers. The invention relates to a reading device for optical, magnetic or magneto-optical information carriers, in particular discs, which reading device comprises at least a magazine for several information carriers, at least a reading device for reading an information carrier and transporting means for magazine and insert it into the reader and vice versa, remove it from the reader and return it to the warehouse.
The information carriers may or may not be mounted in a protective sleeve.
In order to save space and also to be able to retrieve searched information quickly, information is increasingly stored in encoded form on data carriers, in particular optical disks, which can then be read and decoded by special reading devices, so-called "drives. databases with a large
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
number of disks are created. The problem is quickly locating the correct disk and inserting it into the reader.
Hence, reading devices of the aforementioned type were designed with their own warehouse in which a large number of information carriers can be stored and with a mechanism to automatically select the correct information carrier from the warehouse and bring it to the reader.
In known devices of this kind, the magazine is formed by a vertical tower with horizontal compartments for optical disks. This tower is placed above the reader. A mechanism includes a section movable along the tower that can take a disc horizontally out of a compartment and move it down and insert it into the reader. Typically, this mechanism also includes means for revolving the disc taken from a compartment about a horizontal axis through 180 degrees so that the two sides of the disc can be read. In some cases, several such towers are arranged side by side, each tower above its own reading device and with its own transport mechanism.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
However, these known devices are quite complicated to construct and the selection of a disc is still relatively slow.
The object of the invention is to overcome these drawbacks and to provide a reading device for information carriers which is of simple construction and which makes it possible to select the desired information carrier very quickly.
For this purpose, the magazine is round and contains positioning means for storing the information carriers radially oriented therein, the reading device and the transport means, on the one hand, and the warehouse, on the other, are rotatable relative to each other about the axis of the round magazine the device means for causing a relative rotation of the magazine relative to the reader.
In a special embodiment of the invention, the reading device is stationary and the magazine is rotatable about its axis.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the magazine is arranged vertically with its axis.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the transport means are driven entirely pneumatically.
In another special embodiment of the invention, the positioning means are formed by partitions directed parallel to the axis of the warehouse and dividing this warehouse into compartments.
In addition, at least one of the two partitions which define the same compartment is preferably provided with a projection facing the other part at a distance from the axis-oriented end of the compartment in order to compensate for the widening of the compartment towards the outside. .
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the reading device comprises two reading devices, one for each side of a disc-shaped information carrier with two readable sides.
This avoids the need for a turning mechanism for the disc-shaped information carriers and also eliminates the loss of time caused by this turning.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In order to be able to take an information carrier even faster, the reading device can contain several reading devices that are spread over the warehouse.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a reading device for information carriers according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference numbers refer to the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top view with partial cut-away with a reading device for information carriers according to the invention; figure 2 represents the part indicated by F2 in figure 1, but drawn on a larger scale; figure 3 represents a section according to line III-

from figure 2.
The reading device shown in the figures is a reading device for discs 1 contained in a protective sleeve. These discs can be so-called WORM (Write once read many) optical discs and so-called MO (Magneto-optical) discs.
The reading device mainly comprises a carrying construction 2, a round magazine 3, two reading devices 4 and a transport mechanism 5 with each reading device 4.
The magazine 3 is round and is rotatably mounted around a vertical axis 6 on the supporting construction 2. This magazine contains a round horizontal bottom wall 7, a round horizontal top wall 8 and substantially radially oriented partitions 9 which extend from a cylindrical upright inner wall 10 to the open outside of the warehouse and divide this warehouse into compartments 11. With an outside diameter of 75 cm. one hundred and thirty-one compartments 11 can thus be formed for the usual disks 1. These compartments together form an annular useful space, the width of which is almost equal to the width of the usually rectangular protective sleeves of the disks 1. The height
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of this annular space, however, is greater than the height of these protective sleeves.
The partitions 9, together with the shaft 6 around which the magazine 3 is rotatable, keep the two walls 7 and 8 at a distance from each other. The partitions 9 are attached to these walls by means of tongues 12 which protrude through slots 13 in these walls and are folded over on the outside of the magazine 3. The partitions 9 are completely separate from the inner wall 10, which incidentally has a much smaller height.
In order to retain the disks 1 at a distance from the inner wall 10, in spite of the outwardly diverging compartments 11, each of the partitions 9 is provided with a protrusion 15 which, viewed in the same sense, around the axis 6, after the opposite partition 9 that the same compartment 11 defines is oriented.
The distance between the top of the bulge 14 and the plane of the innermost non-bulged portion of the opposing bulkhead is substantially equal to the thickness of a disk 1 with a protective sleeve. The top of the protrusion 14 is spaced from the outside of the magazine 3 so that the compartment 11 has an outwardly widening end against this outside, whereby
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
inserting a disc 1 into the compartment 11 is easy.
The magazine 3 is rotated by means of a stepper motor 15 mounted on the support structure 2 and driving a gear 16 which engages a toothing 17 which is mounted on the underside of the wall 7 around the shaft 6
EMI8.1
is.
The magazine 3 is open on the outside and to prevent the discs 1 from sliding out during rotation by the centrifugal force, this magazine 3 is surrounded by a ring 18 which is fixedly mounted on the reading devices 4 but opposite the inlet opening 20 of these devices is provided with an interruption 19.
The two reading devices 4 are displaced relative to each other about 90 degrees around the axis of the magazine 3 and are fixedly mounted on the support structure 2. In addition, they are mutually tilted 180 degrees so that they can read one side and the other of the disks 1, respectively. These reading devices 4 are suitable for WORM disks or for MO disks or preferably so-called multifunctional devices that can read both WORM and MO disks. Such devices are commercially available and are known by those skilled in the art so that they are not described in detail here
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
being described. A suitable device is for instance commercially available under the name LD520 Laserdrive from LMS Eindhoven NL.
Instead of two reading devices 4 to read the A side and the B side of the disks 1, respectively, a dual read head reader which can read both the A and B side of a disk could be used insofar as such devices are available would be.
A transport mechanism 5 is mounted on the housing 21 of each of the reading devices 4 for transporting a disk 1 from a compartment 11 to the reading device 4 or vice versa. Each transport mechanism 5 contains a pneumatic cylinder-piston mechanism, the cylinder 22 of which is arranged horizontally and the piston rod 23 carries a carrying member 24 on its end. The cylinder 22 is suspended through two cylinder-piston mechanisms 25, 26 from a bridge 27 mounted on the top of the housing 21. When the cylinder 22 is in its highest position, the piston rod 23 with the carrier member 24 can be slid horizontally back and forth above a disc 1 in a compartment 11.
The driver 24 includes two downwardly pointing fingers, one of which can engage in a recess in the upper edge of the protective sleeve of a disc 1 and the other can be located on the side of the protective sleeve facing shaft 6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The stepper motor 15 and the cylinder piston mechanisms 22, 23 and 25, 26 are controlled in a manner which is obvious to the skilled person by a control mechanism not shown in the figures for the sake of simplicity in such a way that, when a particular disc 1 is selected, the stepper motor 15 is actuated and the magazine 3 is rotated until the intended disc 1 is opposite the input opening 20 of one of the reading devices 4, after which the transport mechanism 5 is actuated.
During the rotation of the magazine, the cylinder 22 is in its lowest position and the piston rod 23 is pushed in to the maximum, so that the carrying member 24 is completely outside the magazine 3, in the gap 19 of the ring 18. This carrier member 24 prevents, during this rotation of the magazine 3, a disc 1 from entering this interruption 19. When the mechanism 5 is actuated, the cylinder 22 is first brought into its highest position by the cylinder-piston mechanisms 25, 26, after which the piston rod 23 is extended and the carrying member 24 is moved above the disc 1 to be taken into a compartment 11. to the position shown in figure 4.
Immediately thereafter, the cylinder-piston mechanisms 25, 26 activate, moving the entrainment member 24 down to one finger in the recess in the top of the case
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
of the disc 1 and the other leg on the inside comes to lie next to this cover. The control device then orders the piston rod 23 to be retracted, whereby the disc 1 is inserted into the reader 4 through the interruption 19 in the ring 18. After the disk 1 has been read, the previous operations take place in the reverse sense and the disk 1 is placed back in its compartment.
The reading device 4 sends the read information, possibly after decoding or via a decoding device, to a screen, a printing unit or a computer for further processing.
The construction of the above-described reading device is very simple. It contains only one electric motor. The selection and delivery of a disc 1 to a reader can be done very quickly.
The reading device can be easily expanded. Several round magazines 3 can be mounted one above the other, the disks 1 being read from the magazines by the same or by separate reading devices.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiment, and many changes can be made to the described embodiment within the scope of the patent application.
In particular, the number of reading devices per warehouse need not necessarily be two. A reading device is sufficient, but it is interesting to provide more than two. In the latter case, different disks, for example for multiple users, can be read. If four reading devices are present, they may be offset from each other by one side of the magazine by twenty degrees to limit the dimensions of the device.
An important advantage of the presence of several reading devices and associated transport means for a SD disc consists in that in the event of a defect of a reading device or the transport means associated with an apparatus, this device or these means of transport can be replaced, respectively, while the other reading devices remain operational.
The reader is also not necessarily limited to storing and reading optical or magneto-optical discs. The disks can also be magnetic disks. Others
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
data carriers other than discs can also be used, whether or not in protective cases, although for the sake of delicacy it is provisionally preferable that the magazine is rotatable and the reading device stationary, it is not excluded with sufficiently sturdy reading devices also this reading device around the axis of the warehouse movable, with or without stationary warehouse. The reader is also lighter than the stocked magazine, so that even faster operation and / or a lighter construction could be possible.
Although this only referred to as a reading device and at least one reading device is essential, it cannot be ruled out that in certain cases, in which information carriers are stored that are not only readable but on which information can also be placed by the user, device also contains a receiving device which may or may not be arranged in the same housing as the reading device and transport means can transport an information carrier from the receiving device to the warehouse or vice versa. The information can then be placed on the data carriers either with individual devices or with the reading device itself.
