Description

-1- SPLIT BEARING SEAL This invention relates to a seal for a bearing, more particularly, but not exclusively, to a seal for a bearing mounted in a housing for a rotatable shaft.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION Bearings in housings are widely used to rotatably support shafts. As bearings are usually susceptible to moisture and dirt, it is common practice to provide a seal over the shaft adjacent the bearing to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture. Many different types of seals have been used with varying degrees of success, for example, labyrinth seals and felt seals.
Currently, all seals have an annular configuration and are slid over the free end of a shaft to locate within the housing. A problem with this arrangement exists in that it is difficult to gain access to the bearings for inspection or cleaning as the seal is not easily removed. Thus, the housing has frequently to be dismantled and the shaft removed therefrom before the seal can be removed or replaced. This is both inconvenient and time consuming.
In at least a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a bearing seal which at least partially alleviates some of the abovementioned problems.
2 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with this invention there is provided a bearing seal assembly comprising: an annular support split to form at least two parts, each part having means for releasably securing the parts together about a shaft; the support having securing means for releasably securing the support to a face of a bearing housing; and a substantially radially extending sealing member on an inner periphery of the support to provide a seal between the support and the shaft; the assembly being characterised in that the means are interlocking tongue and groove formations and the securing means includes at least one lug engageable with a formation on the bearing housing to prevent rotation and removal of the assembly.
Preferably the sealing member is moulded into the support to extend radially from an inner periphery of the support.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS One embodiment of a bearing seal will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a shaft, bearing housing and bearing cover; FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the bearing cover in Figure 1; and FIG. 3 is a perspective view of part of the bearing housing in Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE DRAWINGS S A shaft rotatably supported in a pedestal bearing housing is shown in Figure 1.
The bearing housing has a upper part and a lower part which are secured together to enclose a pair of bearings (not shown) spaced apart WO 00/09898 PCTIZA99/00065 -3within the housing. The lower part has a base extending therefrom to allow the housing to be securely mounted on an appropriate support.
A seal assembly (10) is fitted over the shaft on either side of the housing to prevent the ingress of dirt and water into the housing Referring also to Figure 2, the seal assembly (10) has an annular support (13) which is radially divided to form an upper half (11) and a lower half A radial flange (15) extends from the periphery of the operatively outer side of each half (11,12). Securing means is provided for releasably securing the seal assembly (10) to the bearing housing The securing means includes a pair of spaced apart radially projecting stepped lugs The lugs (16) are stepped to be spaced from the seal assembly The pair of lugs (16) extend from an inner side of each half (11,12) of the support A sealing member (17) projects radially from the inner circumference of each half (11,12) of support (13) such that when the two halves of the seal assembly (10) are radially aligned the seal forms a sliding fit over the shaft Interlocking formations (18,19) are provided on the halves (11,12) in order that they may be secured together about the shaft The sealing member (17) is resilient and are moulded into the inner circumference of the seal assembly during the manufacturing process.
As shown more clearly in Figure 3, the housing has slots (20) therein to receive the lugs (16) on the support The slots (20) extend through the outer flange of the bearing housing shown in figure 3 so that the lugs (16) can be positioned behind the housing flange.
The assembly (10) can then be rotated to have the lugs engage behind the flange. Alternatively a groove can be provided within the thickness of the housing flange extending circumferentially from the slots The lugs will then engage in a bayonet-type joint to hold the assembly against the housing.
The securing means also includes a resilient tongue (22) on the flange (15) of the upper and lower halves (11,12) of the seal assembly WO 00/09898 PCT/ZA99/00065 -4- A notch (21) is provided in each of the upper part and lower part of the housing to retain the resilient clip (22).
In use, the halves (11,12) of a seal assembly (10) are separated from each other, fitted over the shaft and secured to each other by sliding the interlocking formations (18,19) into engagement. The seal assembly (10) is next slid along the shaft to the housing where the lugs (16) are aligned with the slots therein. The seal assembly (10) is then pressed into engagement with the housing When the flange (15) abuts the outer surface of the housing the seal assembly is rotated, conveniently using a projection (23) formed on the outer surface, until the clip (22) locates in the notches (21) on the housing preventing further rotation. In order to remove the assembly (10) the clip (22) are simply forced out of engagement with the notches (21) and the above procedure reversed.
The seal assembly (10) thus provides for quick fitting and removal and eliminates the need to dismantle the housing and shaft to remove or replace the sealing member The seal assembly (10) can even be fitted or removed while the shaft is rotating, thus reducing down time.
It will be appreciated however that many other embodiments of a seal assembly exist which fall within the scope of the invention, especially as regards the configuration of the sealing member itself and the means by which it is secured in the housing. For example, the seal assembly could be in screw threaded engagement with the housing. Also, any suitable material can be used for the construction of the sealing member and the support and the seal assembly could have three or more parts if convenient.
