Petty Patent Specification for the invention entitledt, T49 rotective Belt 4c:3 r-vept teozi Stpikik,
/The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing It known to me:-
The invention described in the following statement relates
to an effective method for preventing the sinking of small to
medium-sized craft 4-20 metres in length by the use of
inflatable belts. World-wide statistics show that every year
approximately 2000 craft have been lost due to sinking. The
present invention is therefore aimed at maintaining both crew
members and the craft itself.
Sailing aids for craft are of the rigid air chamber or
cellular foam type, both of which occupy a fixed space within
10 the craft. Safety equipment for such craft have proved to be
Stoo cumbersome thus giving the craft negative buoyancy. These
and other buoyancy systems take up too much space either inside
or outside the craft and are therefore at risk of not providing
an economical, practical and secure unit. It is impossible to
control the movement of water once a craft starts sinking. It
can therefore be said that a fullproof automatic concept that So is, without the need for the crew cannot be used.
The object of the present invention is to overcome the 0" stated disadvantages of the known safety devices for small to
medium-sized craft and hence to prevent a craft from sinking,
due to either a hole in the hull or water levels reaching
critical depths. In its broadest form the invention provides
for a fixed buoyancy system for small to medium-sized craft
which is oromptly activated for positive buoyancy of a craft in
danger of sinking. It consists of a pair of reinforced
inflatable belts fixed externally beside the craft and is
operated by means of inflation by either gas or air at the time
of an emergency.
In reference to the accompanying drawings which are not
to scale
Figure 1 is a detailed section through a craft showing the protective belt in its original fixed position before
inflation.
Figure 2 is a plan of a craft showing the protective belt
before inflation.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a craft showing the
protective belt before inflation.
10 Figure 4 is a clan of a craft showing the protective belt
after inflation.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a craft showing the protective belt after inflation.
Figure 6 is a detailed section through the protective belt showing the Drotective belt before inflation.
Figure 1 shows the entire buoyancy system fixed internally
and externally above deck level in line with the centre of
gravity. Prior to sailing the craft a switch turns an
accumulator on which electrically operates a generator
The generator in turn pumps air into a compressor Air
is then driven from compressor into an air reservoir
which contains a set amount of air in order to inflate each
belt to a maximum volume at the time of an emergency.
When the critical moment occurs a second switch drives
air from air reservoir into a pair of harmonic-like rubber
belts via brass air pipes
When air is initially driven into air reservoir a
meter controls the air pressure so as to fill the reservoir i with the required amount of air. Inflation of the belt (7) is to be at atmospheric pressure but each belt may be inflated to about 6 p.s.i. within approximately 5 seconds.
An aerodynamic aluminium frame (10) situated at one end of
the bell is fixed at two points, internally and externally,
giving the belt sufficient stability against any movement.
An aerodynamic aluminium frame (11) (see figures 2-6) anlocks
from a spring lock (12) when air enters belt The frame
(11) together with plastic reinforcement (13) glide along a set
of ball bearings (14) located within bronze rails (15) which
are affixed to the sides of the craft at two ooints so as to
counteract friction. The belt thus becomes fully inflated
in an extended fashion.
The belt is returned to its original position by
firstly opening a non-return valve (16) which allows air out
and secondly by pulling the frame (11) by means of a reel
pulley (17) and rope (18) fixed to the top and bottom ends of
frames (10) and (11).
The accumulator generator compressor and
air reservoir are concealed by an aluminium sheet enclosure
(19) which protects the mpchinery within the craft and adds to S the aesthetics of the protective belt system.
