Description

P00012 Regulation 3.2 Revised 2/98
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act, 1990
ORIGINAL
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION PETTY PATENT TO BE COMPLETED BY THE APPLICANT NAME OF APPLICANT: ACTUAL INVENTORS: ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO(S): JAMES COLIN BROWN and DAVID WILLIAM SCOTT JAMES COLIN BROWN and DAVID WILLIAM SCOTT Peter Maxwell Associates Level 6 Pitt Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 A BASE FOR A BOLLARD OR OTHER ROADSIDE FURNITURE PQ 1579- 12 July 1999 Australia The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:- -1 "1.
I This invention relates to roadside furniture and more particularly to a base for anchoring roadside furniture, such as an A-frame of a barricade, or for forming part of a bollard.
It is common practice to anchor A-frames with a sand bag and this is an unsightly and somewhat dangerous practice. It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide an improved means of anchoring roadside furniture, such as an A-frame, and/or to provide an improved base for a bollard with or without accessories attached to the bollard.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is a base for a bollard or for supporting a piece of roadside furniture, said base comprising a body having a top face, a bottom face, a hollow interior and an access opening leading to the interior, said bottom face having a recess for receiving a portion of the piece of roadside furniture, wherein the recess extends from one end of the base to the other and is so formed to receive the crossbar of an A-frame.
Preferably, the access opening includes means for coupling to a shaft for receiving a bollard, and the hollow interior is adapted to receive water therein.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a roadside bollard comprising a base as defined above, and a shaft coupled to the access opening of the base. The shaft may have an opening for receiving the rail of a barricade and may be hollow and may be closed at its top by a handgrip or cap. The handgrip or cap is designed to screw directly onto the base or bollard depending on the intended use.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a side view of a base for a bollard or for supporting 1/09/00 a piece of roadside furniture according to one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is an end view of the base shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base shown in Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along lines A-A of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along lines B-B of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is an end view of a bollard incorporating the base of Figs. 1 to Fig. 7 is an exploded section view of the shaft and cap of the bollard shown in Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 shows a number of bases of Figs. 1 to 5 stacked together.
The base 10 shown in Figs. 1 to 5 consists of a hollow body 11 which may be moulded or otherwise formed from a suitable plastics material to define a hollow interior 12. The body 11 has a top face 13, a bottom face 14 and, in this instance, end walls 15 and 16 and side walls 17 and 18. The body may, of course, be circular in cross-section.
An access opening 19 leading to the interior 12 provides a means for delivering water to the interior of the body 11 so as to increase the mass of the base 10 when it is in its intended position of use. The access opening 19 has an external screw thread 19a for receiving a closure or another piece of roadside furniture.
A recess 20 formed in the bottom face 14 extends from end 15 to end 16 and, in this instance, has inwardly directed sidewalls 21 and 22 leading to an anchor pocket 23 which may receive the crossbar of an A-frame.
As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 4, the access opening is located in recess 24 in the top face 13 so that the end portions 25 and 26 of the top face 13 provide protection for the screw thread 19a.
1/09/00 4 In Figs. 6 and 7, a bollard 30 is formed from the base 10, a shaft 31 and a cap 32 which screws onto the top of the shaft 31. The bottom 33 of the shaft 31 has an internal thread 34 to engage the external thread 19a on the access opening 19.
The shaft 31 has an aperture 35 for receiving the rail of a barricade.
Various modifications may be made in details of design and construction without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.
