DAVIES COLLISON CAVE Patent Trade Mark Attorneys Level 10, 10 Barrack Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 Preformed wall nib The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- 5020 I 1 particular to a preformed wall nib.
easily and are invariably not straight.
PREFORMED WALL NIB The present invention relates to a building element for a partition wall, and in particular to a preformed wall nib.
It is necessary to provide access by doorways a prefor corridors in partitioned premises.
Prciominantly, a wall nib is used to form at least one side of the opening.
wallIn prior art construction a wall nib is formed by cladding a co an inner stud with three discrete panels of plasterboard. The thus formed corners of the nib are covered by a perforated metal corner strip, and plaster is rendered onto the metal corner strip to provide a smooth ftnish which blends in with the plasterboard.
A prior art preosaied filmwall nib iextends a round free uctedge as shown in Australian Patent No.
603037. This wall nib is formed of a single sheet of plasterboard having V-shaped grooves cut into the board from one face to provide hinge lines, and the thus cut board is folded around a beam, in a U shaped maimer, and fixed by adhesives to the beam. An additional beam is detachably fixed between the free arms of the sheet.
o °"Pr Both these forms of ribs have problems with the corners, which are soft and spall S°°'easily and are invariably not straight.
The present invention seeks to ameliorate these disadvantages and to provide a preformed wall nib which is easy to use and construct.
In one broad form the invention provides a preformed wall nib comprising: first and second spaced apart side wall sheets joined at adjacent ends to a third a a each of said sheets being formed of wood and/or a wood product material; and 'a 25 a film bonded to the outer surfaces of all three joined wall sheets. L Preferably, said film extends around free edge portions of said side sheets and onto at least part of the inner surfaces of said wall nib. t Preferably the first and second sheets are substantially mutually parallel and perpendicular to the third sheet.
More preferably the first and second sheets each have an outer face, the third sheet has two end faces and said outer faces and the respective end faces are co-ph nar.
Preferably the side sheets form butt joints with the third sheet.
<Preferably the side sheets have free end portions and the outer face of the free end p:\wpdocsamd\461361.vas\ajc

5 -2portions tapers inwardly in the direction of the free ends.
In the preferred embodiment the wall sheets are comprised of medium density fibreboard and the sheet or film is a sheet of paper.
Preferably the sheet of paper is N'apped around the free end of the side sheets and extends part way onto the inner surfaces of the side sheets.
The invention will now be described with reference to a non-limiting embodiment which is shown in perspective in Fig. 1.
The wall nib 1 of the embodiment of Fig. 1 comprises an end wall sheet 2 and two substantially identical side wall sheets 3 and 4. The wall sheets 2, 3, 4 are preferably comprised of medium density fibreboard such as that sold under the trade names CRAFTWOOD, CUSTOMWOOD and CUSTOMBOARD. However the sheets 2, 3, 4 may be other suitable compositions, such as timber, plaster board, particle board, chip board and plywood, etc.
The two side sheets 3, 4 each have a end face 5, 6 which abuts against the inner face 8 of the end sheet 2. The end faces 5, 6 are glued to the inner face 8, although nails with or without glue may be used. Similarly whilst a butt joint is shown, other °conventional joints such as tongue and groove, dove tail or recessed joints may be used.
Further, if desired, dowls engaging in bores in adjoining sheets may be used.
The outer faces 10, 11 of the two side sheets 3, 4 are co-planar with the respective 20 end faces 12, 13 of the end sheet 2 and a continuous sheet of paper 14 is wrapped around the outer surfaces of all three sheets and preferably extends around the free edges 15, 16 of the side sheets onto the inner faces 17, 18. The paper 14 may be of any suitable type and is preferably compatible with plasterboard papers, tapes and cements to assist in finishing of the joint.
The outer surfaces 10, 11 of the two side sheets in the free edge regions 20, 21 5:55 are preferably tapered inwardly towards the free edges. This aids in production of a smooth joint with the wall to which the nib is to be attached. However it will be appreciated that this tapering is not essential.
Whilst the embodiment shown and described has two substantially parallel side sheets 1, 4 it will be appreciated that it is not essential that the side sheets be parallel.
Whilst parallel side sheets will normally be desired, if required the two side sheets 'nay i mutually converge or diverge toward their free ends. Obviously this will require machining of the end faces of the end sheet such that the end faces of the end sheet and p:\wpdocs\amd\461361 vas\ajc L~ "arr~ 1 idi ii~"~
I
I -3side faces of the side sheets are co-planar. Similarly the end faces 5, 6 will require machining to ensure they sit flush with the inner face 8.
The preformed nib can be of any suitable size to fit around the steel or timber studs utilised in the partition walls. The preformed nib can also be made of any suitable wood material such as timber, processed wood such as particle board or fibreboard, plywood etc.
The embodiment utilising medium density fibreboard provides a strength and straightness of corners which are not obtainable utilising either of the two prior art methods described previously. Further, the preformed nib of the embodiment as shown in Figure 1 is lighter in weight than the preformed nib described in Australian Patent No.
603037 and has a much greater strength to weight ratio.
It should be obvious to people skilled in the art that the proportions of the dimensions of the preformed nib of the present invention can be varied to suit the specific requirements of the particular building site.
