LC~. i .i r 2 THIS INVENTION relates to a filter apparatus and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a filter apparatus for removing solids and soluble, emulsified and buoyant material from a polluted source of liquid, such as water.
The invention has particular, but not exclusive, application to the filtering of polluted water being recirculated from an animal drinking trough to a storage tank from which clean water is fed to the trough.
According to the invention there is provided a filter apparatus for liquids comprising an elongated upstanding housing open at the top to the atmosphere, an inlet pipe extending upwards from and through the bottom 0 9 000of the housing and centrally therein and terminating in 100 15 a lower section of the housing, a further pipe located 000 o in an upper section of the housing and centrally therein 0.0 0 and spaced above said inlet pipe, baffle plate members oo o 0oOo secured to said further pipe and to the inner wall of the 0 0 housing at an angle thereto, said baffle plate members being spaced, at diametrically opposed sides thereof, from the inner wall of the housing, said further pipe terminating 090, below the top of the hoising at a location adjacent the 04 0 00.0 level of an outlet from the housing.
o o The housing is preferably cylindrical and the o0 25 further upper pipe is preferably of greater diameter than 0 09 the inlet pipe. The lower inlet pipe and the upper pipe act as separating tubes in the apparatus.
a In order that the invention and its manner of a tt S performance may be more fully described, reference will now be made to an embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of an embodiment of the invention; and Figure 2 is a plan view of a baffle plate member of the apparatus of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus comprises a cylindrical housing 5 having a closed bottom 6 and an open or perforated top 7. Extending through bottom 6 and -4I

*1 3 3 connected to a source of polluted water to be treated is a centrally located stand pipe 8 terminating at a location in the lower part of housing In the upper part of housing 5 there is provided a centrally located further pipe 9 having inclined baffle plate members 10 secured thereto. The angle of inclination may be in the range of 50 to 80 degrees. The baffles are also secured to the inner wall of housing 5. Pipe 9 is preferably of greater diameter than stand pipe 8, generally one and one half times greater.
Baffle plate members 10 are in sealing engagement with the inner wall of housing 5 except at two diametrically opposed peripheral locations where two chordal sections have been removed from the baffle plates to provide passageways 11 and 12 between the baffle plates and the inner wall of the housing.
At the upper end of housing 5 adjacent the level of the top of pipe 9 is an outlet 13 leading to a storage tank (not shown) or the like. At the lower end of housing 5 there is provided a drain plug 14 to allow removal of filtered materials from sump 15 surrounding stand pipe oooo 8 o 00 08 0, In operation, polluted water is pumped from a 0 60 contaminated water source such as an animal drinking trough 25 to the bottom of housing 5 and upwardly through stand pipe 8. Solids in the polluted water leaving stand pipe 8 will fail into sump 15 due to the reduction in velocity of the .7 water after it leaves stand pipe 8 by reason of the pipe 8 being of smaller diameter than pipe 9.
Water from the top of the sump 15 containing small particles of solids not falling into the sump and other soluble, emulsified and buoyant materials will pass upwardly through upper pipe 9 and these solids and other materials as they become non-buoyant after a period of time will fall downwardly in the water column around upper pipe 9 and settle on the upper baffle plate member from where they will pass through passageway 12 at the lowermost part of the baffle plate anid continue downwardly through
I~
"p: r 4 passageway 12 in the lower baffle plate member to be collected in sump Water from the top of sump 15 and entrained Lir and small particles of solids rise through passageways 11 in the uppermost part of the inclined baffle plate members and the small particles are deposited on the baffle plates. The passage of air through passageways 11 creates turbulence above the baffle plates preventing solids building up on the baffle plates and assists in the fall of the solids towards passageways 12.
As air column passes upwards through passageways 11 it continues over the opening of outlet 13, which is in line with these passageways, and prevents any particles in the water column at that location from passing into 15 outlet 13.
on o0f o o 0 a o 00 0 009 00 00 0 0000 o 00 00 0 0 0 o 0 As the sump 15 fills up with the materials deposited therein, such materials can be removed through the drain hole in the lower part of the sump.
It will be appreciated that there may be made many modifications in details of design and configuration of the above-described embodiment and all such modifications are deemed to be within the ambit of the invention.
