Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: DAVIES COLLISON, Patent Attorneys, 1 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, 3000.
Complete specification for the invention entitled: "IMPROVED PALLET AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us -1- -la- "IMPROVED PALLET AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME" The present invention relates to pallets for n use in the rack storage of goods or other storage systems and in the transport of loads.
°a At present pallets are in general malufactured 9 ;oo 5 from timber and, whilst timber pallets are satisfactory 9 and relatively cheap, difficulties can be encountered ,o when used for handling food owing to problems in hygiene control. It has been proposed to form pallets from plastics materials however problems have been encountered in providing satisfactory strength, and further, manufacturing techniques have usually cet t 44 involved large expense.
41 It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved pallet and method of manufacturing the same which alleviates one or more of the aforementioned disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a pallet comprising a main body of plastics material having rigid reinforcing means disposed therein, the main body being formed by a rotational moulding process within a mould cavity, the reinforcing means being disposed within the prior to commencement of the rotational moulding process.
DAVIES COLLISON% MELBOURNE and CANBERRA, -2- Preferably the main body comprises a major upper side and major lower side with a cavity formed within the main body said reinforcing means being disposed within the cavity so that it extends between the upper and lower sides.
The reinforcing means may comprise a plurality of rigid members secured together to form a framework, the framework comprising two groups of panels, the panels in each group being parallel and spaced apart with the opposed longitudinal edges disposed adjacent the respective top and bottom walls of the main body. The groups of panels are arranged in a criss-cross network and the intersecting panels may have locating slots formed therein which enable the panels to be disposed in the same plane with respect to one another.
Preferably the main body includes openings in the side wall for receiving the forks of a fork lift truck the openings being provided along each side edge wall and being aligned with the openings in the frame panels so that the forks of the truck can be received within the pallet.
The main body raay further include a plurality of support posts or columns extending between the top and bottom walls said posts being formed during the rotational moulding process.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a pallet in a mould having a mould cavity the method comprising the steps of; locating reinforcing means within the mould cavity and thereafter forming a main body by a plastics rotational moulding process so that the reinforcing means is located within the main body and secured thereto.
\-ZLU
'IVT
lyll -3- Preferably the reinforcing means is suspended within the mould by means of a plurality of locating posts which provide a space between the interior wall of the mould and the reinforcing means. The locating posts may be releasably secured to th6 mould or form part thereof.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a top plan view of the pallet according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an underside plan view of the pallet shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the pallet; Figure 4 is a side elevation of a panel member used for forming the reinforcing means; and Figures 5 and 6 are details of how the reinforcing means can be mounted to the mould.
Referring the the drawings there is shown a pallet generally indicated at 1 which comprises a main body 2 of plastics material having rigid reinforcing means 15 disposed therein. The main body 2 is formed by a rotational moulding process with the reinforcing means 15 being disposed within the main body 2 during the rotational moulding process.
The main body may take any suitable form or shape, and in the form shown, it is square or rectangular ia n plan having major upper and lower walls 3 and and a peripheral side wall 7 extending between the upper and lower walls. The main body 2 is arranged so as to have a cavity 13 formed therein and the reinforcing means 15 is disposed within the cavity so that it extends between the upper and lower walls 3 and rn -4- In the embodiment shown, the reinforcing means comprises a plurality of rigid members 17 secured together to form a framework. The framework 17 comprises two groups of panels 18 and 19 the panels in each group being parallel and spaced apart with the opposed longitudinal edges disposed adjacent the respective top and bottom walls of the main body. The groups of panels are arranged in a criss-cross network. As shown the intersecting panels have locating slots 25 formed therein which enable the panels to be disposed in the same plane with respect to one another. Openings 26 are provided in the walls of the panels for reasons which will hereinafter become apparent. The panels may be formed from any suitable material, however, it is preferable i that metals such as steel are used.
The main body of the pallet includes openings 27 in the side wall for receiving the forks of a fork lift truck or the like. These openings 27 are preferably provided along each side edge wall to provide some versatility in use. The openings 27 are aligned with the openings 26 in the frame panels so that the forks of 'the truck can be received l within the pallet. Reinforcing ribs 11 are provided on the top and bottom walls as required. The main body of the pallet also includes a plurality of 1 support posts or columns 12 extending between the top and bottom walls. Preferably, these posts are formed during the rotational moulding process.
The pallet is manufactured by locating the reinforcing means 15 within a mould cavity 21, of a mould 20 and thereafter forming the main body 2 by a rotational moulding process so that the reinforcing neans 15 is located within the main body, and secured thereto.
The reinforcing means 15 is suspended within the mould by means of a plurality of mounting or locating posts 22 which provide a space between the interior wall of the mould and the reinforcing means. The locating posts may be releasably secured to the mould or alternatively, form part.thereof.
After the rotational moulding process has been completed the posts are removed from the main body. During the moulding process, the plastics material tends to build up around each post and thereby secure the reinforcing means to the main body.
The main body may be formed from any suitable plastics material, however it is preferable that Spolyethylene is used.
Any suitable rotational moulding machine or apparatus may be used which preferably rotates the mould about three axes. Preferably the mould is formed in two halves which are adapted to be clamped together with the reinforcing means supported by the locating posts. In one preferred form, about twenty kilogram of polyethylene powder is used, the powder being heated to about 200 0
C.
After formation of the main body, the recesses for receiving the fork lift's forks are formed as well as four access recesses in the lower surface of the bottom wall.
