Ai Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO MOBILE REFUSE COLLECTING APPARATUS" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:
A
r;ilrri i This invention relates to mobile refuse collecting apparatus.
It is an object of the present invention to provide mobile refuse collecting apparatus which will at least provide the public with a useful choice.
Accordingly, the invention consists in mobile refuse collecting apparatus, said apparatus including a self propelled wheel mounted chassis, an operating station at or adjacent the front of said chassis from which the displacement of said chassis is controlled; a refuse collection hopper; and conveying means in the form of an endless belt having a collection end positioned adjacent but above the ground surface to receive refuse from the ground 9r, I 9* surface and deposit said refuse in said collection hopper, t 5" the collection end of said conveying means being directly visible from said operating station.
To those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the descriptions herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
One preferred form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which, -2- 0 oZ ;z r r~4 Figure 1 is a perspective view of refuse collecting apparatus according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a side elevation view of the apparatus depicted in Figure 1; *9 4~ 9 4.4 9 4.

The apparatus 5 includes an operating station 8 at which an operator 9 is situtated to control the movement of the chassis 6.
In the conventional manner the apparatus includes a hopper or body 10 mounted for movement with the chassis 6 to retain the collected refuse and a conveyor 11 to convey the collected refuse from a collection station 12 ,preferably at one side of the vehicle, into the interior of the hopper 10. Suitable compacting equipment (not shown) of any known or suitable form may be provided within the body 10 to compact the refuse-in the conventional manner.
As can be seen the collection station 12 and at least part of the conveyor 11 is directly visible to the operator 9 and, in the form shown, the collection station 12 is laterally adjacent the operating station 8.
4. 44 *r I 4914 9 49 9C 4n 1 4c I Ic 4 4 3r i .:i i: i:: r- *i ri' ~:t The conveyor 11 is preferably in the form of an endless conveyor having a collection end 13a and a delivery end 13b. It will be noted that the collection end 13a is low i.e. at or adjacent the lowest point on the chassis 6 thus facilitating the task of placing refuse onto the conveyor. It will further be noted that the conveyor preferably includes laterally projecting vanes 14 to hold loose refuse while it is being conveyed into the hopper 9.
The conveyor may be driven by any suitable power source such as, for example, a mechanical power-take-off connected to the transmission system of the chassis or one or more hydraulic o motors.
If the refuse is loose, as opposed to being bagged, a suitable barrier (not shown) may be provided about the lower end o of the conveyor to ensure the refuse contacts, and is conveyed away, by the conveyor.
0 t.i As can be seen in Figure 4, footmen 15 who physically load the refuse may remain on the vehicle. Advantageously they are, secured to the vehicle by body-belts or harnesses 16 attached, by quick release fittings, to the vehicle. This enables the men to hang out, while supported, and pick up rubbish bags or bins 17.
Referrring now to Figures 5 and 6, a further embodiment of refuse collection apparatus 20 is 'depicted the apparatus including, as before, a self-propelled wheel mounted chassis 21, an operating station 22 from which the displacement of the chassis is controlled, a refuse collection hopper 23 mounted for S25 i i 4 i displacement with the chassis 21 and conveying means 24 to Sconvey the refuse into the hopper 23. The principal difference with this embodiment is that the conveyor 24 receives refuse from two collection stations 25 and 26 situated on opposite sides of the vehicle. In the embodiment depicted lateral feeder conveyors 27 and 28 feed the main central conveyor 24 from the collection stations 25 and 26 respectively. The central conveyor 24 is, as before.
The embodiment depicted in Figure 5 shows the use of an articulated vehicle, the hopper 23 being provided in the form of a removable trailer pivotally mounted on the chassis 21 at 9: o A further feature of the form of apparatus depicted in Figures 5 and 6 is the front mounted footplate 31. It will be noted from Figure 6 that the footplate 31 preferably extends across the entire width of the apparatus 20 at the front thereof so that men working with the apparatus can pass from side to side of the vehicle while being carried on the vehicle yet 1« always remain in the sight of an operator seated at the S" operating station 22. Crew accommodation may also be provided indicated at 32.
i Both forms of apparatus may also be provided with suitable means at or adjacent the collection station or stations to 99 9 :assist with the unloading of bins. Such means could, for example, comprise hydraulically operated arms with which the 25 bins would, in use, be engaged, the arms pivoting to invert the bins and empty the contents thereof either onto the main conveyor or a feeder conveyor.
5 'i In use, the operator drives the vehicle along routes where refuse is to be collected and, because the delivery section of the conveyor and in fact the entire rubbish collection station 12 is in direct visual range, he can observe the footmen at work. This considerably enhances the safety of refuse collection.
It will further be noted that the input end of the conveyor is relatively low and easily accessible thus reducing the burden of loading rubbish into the apparatus.
It will thus be appreciated that the present invention provides mobile refuse collection apparatus of a novel configuration which considerably eases and enhances the safety of the task of refuse collection.
