Description
This invention is related to the clamping device. More particularly, the present
invention relates to a small-diameter tool holding chuck for holding a small-diameter
rotary tool used in precision machine tools and the like. More specifically, it is an
improvement in small-diameter tool holding chuck to overcome the various machining
problem and thereby reducing manufacturing costs.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION In the production or maintenance industry, there is a continuous improvement in tool
holding chuck systems which substantially increases the grip strength or slip torque of
the tool holding chuck system without significantly increasing manufacturing costs or
equipment complexity.
There are a number of manufacturing or production plants wherein various types of
tool bits are used which can be easily inserted and removed from the chuck by
operating a sleeve member or other actuating device without the need for a wrench or
other tool. This type of chucking device is called a "quick-conversion" chuck which is
used in mass production. In these special types of chucks, the tool shank is inserted
into the holes formed by the segments of the chuck body. The segments are separated
by axial slits. The compressive force is exerted on the segment to compress or flex the
segment radially inward to grip the handle of the tool.
The importance of increasing grip strength or slip torque is particularly relevant to the
use of high-speed machinery such as routers, empty cutters, laminating trimmers and
the like which are high-precision types of machinery. The disclosed invention is
particularly relevant to those chucks that substantially increase the grip strength and
slip torque of the chucks without adding manufacturing steps or expense.
Various types of machining tool holders are used according to the need of
operations. Therefore, a huge variety of sizes and shapes are present in machining tool
holders. Generally, due to the availability at low cost, ease of operation and easy
maintenance the back draw tool holders are more popular. The back draw tool holders
are having a structure in which a drawing screw is able to rotate which is attached to a
tool holder's main body, and this drawing screw draws a collet deep into a collet
holding hole. These tool holders include a tapered collet for inserting a shank portion
of a tool therein and a drawing screw that is screwed in the tapered collet. A wrench is
inserted from a rear end opening of a pull stud attachment hole, and the drawing screw
is turned in a tightening direction to draw the tapered collet deep into a collet holding
hole, thereby chucking the tool inserted in a tool insertion hole of the collet. The back
draw tool is having its own disadvantage of removing pull studs every time while doing
clamping / de-clamping of the cutting tool by inserting the Allen key in the drawbar.
For different operations, different types of tools are required. Therefore while
changing tools the back draw tool holders are required to be removed or inserted from
the machining centre every time and due to the paucity of time in the production line,
this becomes a cumbersome task for the user. Hence there is a need for improvement
in existing tool holders.
Additionally, the major problem associated with the existing tool holder is described
as follows. If the tool length of the tool holder, which is a distance from the top end
of the shank portion formed along the outer periphery of the rear end of the tool holder
to the top end of the tool holder, is longer than that of typical tool holders, the use of a
short drawing screw requires a deep hole drilling process to form a hole from the rear
end of the shank portion, which increases the processing time and the processing cost.
If the same drilling process for the drawing screw is used as that used in tool holders
having a short tool length, the length of the drawing screw is increased, thereby
reducing the rigidity of the drawing screw. Thus, the tapered collet can be drawn
obliquely.
In the production line there is a continuous workflow and to maintain a suitable rate
of production with accuracy and precision user needs to be much concerned about the
fixtures of every part of tooling and clamping accessories. It becomes a tedious job to
-2- align two different parts together to maintain the required run-out accuracies and therefore it adversely affects the manufacturing cost. Furthermore, there is a high chance of torque leakage due to power transmission through two different parts which also hampers the quality of work and fineness of the workpiece. In the existing clamping device, the servicing of the bevel gear operating tool holder is having a big problem as it needs to send back to the original manufacturer to maintain the required accuracies of two parts and align them back to their original position. It is quite a lengthy process because spare parts may not be easily available in the market. Further hub ring formation during the assembly creates chances of fouling and in turn, reduces the useful length of the tool holder
The prior art reveals that there have been attempts to develop a device and apparatus
for clamping and de-clamping a tool shank which is used in different types of
machining centres.
Following patent literature describes the existing state of the art:
I. JP5762301B2: Tool Holder
JP5762301B2 describes a tool holder which includes a hollow taper shank chucking
device having a centre axis, a chucking device, a tension rod which cooperates with
the chucking device and an actuating unit by means of which the tension rod may be
actuated, i.e., displaced. The actuating unit has an actuating element which is movable
at an angle relative to the centre axis and which includes at least one actuating part.
The angle may be 90°. The tension rod is provided with at least one engagement part.
The actuating part and engagement part form a wedge mechanism which is used to
convert a radial motion of the actuating element, i.e., a displacement perpendicular to
the centre axis, into an axial displacement of the tension rod in the direction of the
25 centre axis.
This tool holder device of JP5762301B2 is two piece unit therefore there are chances
of torque leakage while clamping and de-clamping of a tool shank. Further this
chucking device cannot be used to hold a cylindrical shank tool like end-mill, drill,
reamer and the like. All parts mentioned in JP5762301B2 are the parts which are
generally used in a hollow taper shank chucking device only.
JP5762301B2 provides a tool holder whose overall length measured in the direction
of the centre axis is relatively short, SO that even under space constraints the tool holder
is able to hold tools which are then used to machine work pieces. Moreover a variety
of components required to assemble and align it together precisely SO as to achieve the
desired accuracy. Therefore, its manufacturing cost becomes relatively high.
II. JP5762301B2: Tool Holder
In this invention the slotted hole communicating with an inside of a recessed groove
is formed on a side surface of a draw bar. In the neighbourhood of a taper shank portion
of a holder body, a slant through hole communicating with the inside of the recessed
groove via the slotted hole is formed from a front end side toward a rear end side of
the holder body. A draw member is rotatable screwed into a threaded portion formed
on the recessed groove of the draw bar. A connecting engagement part is formed at a
central portion of a tip of the draw member. In this invention an engaging means of an
operating means inserted from the slant through hole through the slotted hole is
engaged and connected with the connecting engagement part.
This invention relates to a tool holder used in, for example, a machining centre
or the like, and more particularly to a tool holder suitable for deep digging in die
machining or the like, or high speed rotation machining in light alloy or the like.
In JP5762301B2, a rotatable retractable member is provided. A coupling
engaging portion is provided at the centre of the distal end of the retractable member
and it is located near the tapered shank portion of the holder body from the front-end
side to the rear end side of the holder main body. In this invention when the rotary
operation handle is rotated to rotate the retracting member, the drawbar does not rotate,
but only the retracting member rotates and the drawbar reciprocate linearly along the
central axis line to move the collet forward and backward along the taper surface of
the tip side of the through hole. However, there is no clarity about how the retracting
member only rotates and does not move along the central axis without any friction free
back support. This is a major drawback of invention disclosed in JP5762301B2.
Furthermore, the configuration of the holder is complicated as the number of parts
used are large in number, thereby increasing the production cost / manufacturing cost
to a great extent.

III. KR100947414B1- Tool, tool holder, and machine tool
In this invention the tool is attachable to a spindle of a machine tool by an automatic
tool changer in the same way as an ordinary tool. It is driven without connecting with
an external power supply and able to rotate at a rotational speed different from that of
the spindle of the machine tool without supply of electric power from the outside. The
disclosed device is provided with a machining tool for machining a work-piece and
motor is connected with the machining tool for rotating the machining tool with a
generator from which rotary force is transmitted from the spindle of the machine tool
which generates electric power to drive the motor. The shaft of the motor is arranged
in an orientation different from the axial centre of the spindle.
The objective of this invention is to provide a tool and a tool holder capable of rotating
a waterway tool, which is attached to the machine tool body. This invention is not
suitable for a small-diameter tool holding chuck for holding a small-diameter rotary
tool as disclosed in proposed invention.
There is an additional electric motor is connected to the tool SO as to rotate the tool at
higher rotational speed. Further the taper shank (mounting part) of the tool holder is
mounted on a spindle which transfers rotational force of the spindle to the electric
generator which is assembled inside the casing member. This arrangement increases
the complexity of the invention.
KR100947414B1 describes only about cutting tool rotation with the help of an electric
motor rotationally driven by electric power supplied from the generator via cable
which is completely different from the proposed invention.
IV. KR100947414B1 Machine Tool
In this invention the clamping of a small-diameter tool is performed by using stable
energizing force of a Belleville spring. In unclamping of the small-diameter tool, when
coolant (normally, gas such as compressed air) to serve as an operating medium is fed
from a coolant supplying source, it enters a cylinder chamber part on the back pressure
side of a piston member from an introducing pipe part through a draw bar and a
diameter extending part, SO as to advance the piston member while competing with the
Belleville spring. Therefore, a part whose diameter is contracted of a spring collet is elastically returned to the original diameter, and clamping of the small-diameter tool is released.
Here, the mounting portion as of a hallow tapered shank portion specifically of HSK
taper interface. In this invention there is nothing explained about using this invention
in tapered sleeve shank spindles of BT / SK / CAT interfaces which are having a
clamping mechanism built in the spindle to clamp the pull stud at the mounting portion
of the tool holder when the mounting portion is mounted to the tapered sleeve of the
spindle. Further, this invention is not describing about any mechanism of clamping or
de-clamping of a tool in a collet type tool holder. In addition to that there is nowhere
mentioned in the description about use of bevel gear.
Moreover, in this invention tool clamping and unclamping cannot be done manually
outside the machine. Therefore, this disclosed tool holder cannot be used for general
purpose of holding the tool for inspection on tool inspection machine.
In the construction of this disclosed tool holder there is a need of a combination of
stationary parts and reciprocating parts. Due to this, SO many components are required
to assembled and aligned together precisely SO as to achieve the desired accuracy.
Therefore, the manufacturing cost becomes relatively high.
On the contrary the proposed invention being in a single form, manufacturing
processes can be completed in one setting without disturbing centre line of the holder.
Therefore, manufacturing cost is comparatively less. Furthermore, since the
configuration of the holder can be simplified to reduce the number of parts, the
production cost of the proposed invention is also reduced.
For the reasons stated above, which will become apparent to those skilled in the art
upon reading and understanding the specification, there is a need in the art for a device
for clamping and de-clamping a tool in a shank. The present invention has been made
in consideration of the above-described problems of the prior art, and it is an object of
the present invention to provide an improved version of the bevel gear operating
adapter in two parts. The upper part of this holder body consists of a rotational drawbar
with a bevel gear at the bottom end. The lower part of the holder body consists of a
chuck body with a rotating pinion assembly. The adapter is securely connected and fixed to the chuck body. Specifically, the end portion of the adapter fits in the circular recess of the chuck body. Furthermore, the flat annular end face of the adapter is in surface contact with the flat annular tip face of the chuck body. The annular end face and the end face are perpendicular to the common centre axis. The inner peripheral surface of the circular recess has a constant diameter in the axial direction and is formed coaxially with the common axis. The inner circumferential surface is cantered
SO that the axial centre of the adapter coincides with the axial centre of the chuck body.
Henceforth, for solving the abovementioned problems, for clamping and de-clamping
the tool holder provided with an improved version of the bevel gear operating adapter
is in single form is provided.
The object of the present invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck for
holding a small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tools that have high
strength, less manufacturing cost as well as trouble-free maintenance.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool which can be produced in a single unit with
an improved version of the bevel gear operating adapter which is presently available
in two parts
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool provided with a particular gear ratio for
hassle-free operation
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tools that can
operate in an efficient manner to transmit the torque.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tools which is more
reliable than any other tool holding device.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a small-diameter tool holding chuck
for holding a small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tool which is using
fewer complex components and provide an effective and easy solution to existing tool
systems.
Embodiments of the present disclosure present technological improvements as
solution to one or more of the above-mentioned technical problems recognized by the
inventor in conventional practices and existing state of the art.
The present invention relates to a small-diameter tool holding chuck for holding a
small-diameter rotary tool used in precision machine tools and the like.
The present invention provides a single unit tool holder device for easy clamping and
de-clamping, comprising a chuck body that has a shank portion provided at one end
and a collet insertion conical hole having an enlarged shape at the tip. A tapered collet
having a female screw hole at the bottom end to be inserted into the collet insertion
conical hole and screwing with a draw screw having a male screw extending from the
bevel gear to the tip side and inserted into the collet insertion conical hole from the
bottom end of the adapter. In this device, a pinion is rotatably and accommodated in
the extending lateral hole, engages with the bevel gear and rotates the draw screw to
move the taper collet coaxially inside or outside. The present disclosure provides a tool
holder device for easy clamping and de-clamping wherein an improved version of
bevel gear is provided for the operating adapter which is in a single form rather than
dividing a holder body in parts and roundness of collet insertion conical is in relation
to the centre line of the holder SO that it can move in vertical direction in which the
centre of the holder remains unchanged even if components are replaced as per
necessity of other components. The disclosed tool holder has an improved design due
to which this holder can be manufactured in a single unit. It also has modified bevel
gear and pinion ratio to 1:1 (Miter gear). Due to this modified gear ratio, the small bevel gear can be easily inserted into the collet cavity and put in the place. Therefore, without affecting the functionality it can perform all operations in an efficient manner and with precision without fail.
The disclosed device provides a tool holder which is manufactured as a single
unit. Hence it eliminates the formation of extended circumferential flange ring.
Therefore, useful adapter length can be fully utilized in deep machining without any
foul. Moreover, there is no chance of torque leakage. Therefore, it is more
advantageous other tool holders.
Also, a damaged holder can be repaired and refurbished anywhere with OEM spare
parts. Even if the component is replaced, the vertical degree is prevented in advance,
SO that the precision of the holder body can be constantly maintained. The disclosed
device provides a tool holder whereby the whole holder's body is made in one piece.
Due to this reason, it is possible to omit a separate polishing process for two parts to
join together, henceforth it improves the overall productivity.

a taper shank portion at the back end which is tapered toward the end and is formed on
the outer periphery thereof to match the same with the machine spindle taper. The axial
center of the taper shank coincides with the central axis O (not shown) of the tool
holding chuck body (2). The tapered shank is inserted into the spindle of a machine
tool (not shown). A flange (1) is having a V-shaped cross-section extending in the
circumferential direction formed on an outer periphery of a tip portion of the chuck
body (2)essential for automatic tool change process in the machine.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the device consists of the front
portion of the tool holding the chuck body (2) which is a cylindrical member having a
collet insertion hole at the center. The collet insertion hole coincides with the axis O
(not shown) of the tool holding chuck body (2) and it is conical in shape which expands
toward the front end (17). On the other hand, the end region (18) of the collet insertion
hole has a substantially constant diameter in the axial direction.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the device consists of the taper
collet (13) which is inserted into the collet insertion hole from the front-end side (17)
of the tool holding chuck (2) and moves inside along the collet insertion hole towards
end area(18). In this device at the center of the taper collet (13), a tool holding hole
(15) extending from the tip to the end of the taper collet (13) is formed. In the tip region
of the taper collet (13), a slit (16) extending in parallel direction with the axis O (not
shown) is formed. In this device, there is equal-sized slots (16) are provided at intervals in the circumferential direction. The outer diameter of the tip region of the taper collet

end of the taper collet (13). The female screw hole (19) continuously extends from the
back of the tool holding hole (15) and it is screwed with the male screw portion (20)
of the draw screw (29).
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the device consists of the draw
screw (29) which has a large diameter head (27) at the bottom end and a small diameter
male screw (20) located at the tip end. The female screw (21) is formed on the inner
diameter of the collet insertion hole at the bottom side, and the thrust retaining annular
ring (6) having threads at the tip (22) is screwed into this female screw (21).
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the device consists of the
retaining ring (6) which engages with the back side of the bevel gear (7) to prevent the
bevel gear (7) from coming out through the collet insertion hole. It has a ring-like
shape having an outer diameter and an inner diameter corresponding to the outer
diameter of the neck lower portion of the draw screw (29). The axial position of the
retaining ring (6) can be adjusted by rotating the retaining ring (6) in the tightening
direction or the loosening direction. A low friction member (12) interposes between
the back-end side of the bevel gear (7) and the retaining ring (6). The low friction
member (12) is for reducing the frictional resistance between the back-end face of the
bevel gear (7)and the bottom-end face of the retaining ring (6) while rotation of the
bevel gear (7). For smooth operation, a metal bearing washer having a thickness of
1.50 to 2.00 mm is provided. These bearings are derived from low friction processing
such as ion nitriding processing, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating processing, TiN
coating processing, cryogenic treatment, and mirror surface lapping processing for
reducing frictional resistance with the back-end face of the bevel gear (7) and the
bottom end face of the retaining ring (6) as well as on both surfaces of the low friction
member (12). As a result, the axis of the draw screw (29) is centered SO as coincide
with the axis O. Further, the rotational efficiency of the draw screw (29) is improved
to draw the taper collet (13) inside the tool holding chuck (2) therefore user requires
very little force SO that user can chuck the shank portion of the tool (14) easily.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the device consists of the bevel
gear pinion (3) serving as a bevel gear put inside of the lateral hole (32). An umbrella-
like tooth formed at the outer edge of the bottom end of the bevel gear pinion (3)
meshes with a bevel gear (7) formed at the end of the head of the draw screw(29)A
polygonal hole (5) is provided for rotating the bevel gear pinion (3) which is formed
on the top end of the bevel gear pinion (3). In this disclosed device a female screw (32)
is formed on the outer diameter side of the lateral hole, and the thrust retaining annular
ring (4) is screwed into the female screw (32). The retaining annular ring (4) engages
with the bevel gear (7) to prevent the bevel gear pinion (3) from coming out of the
lateral hole (32) to the outside diameter side. The axial position of the retaining annular
ring (4) can be adjusted by rotating the retaining annular ring (4) in the tightening
direction or the loosening direction.
In an embodiment of the present invention, a low friction member (11) intervenes
between the bevel gear pinion (3) and the thrust retaining annular ring (4). The low
friction member (11) is for reducing the frictional resistance between the top end face
of the bevel gear pinion (3) and the bottom end face of the retaining ring (4) when the
bevel gear pinion (3) rotates. There is a low friction processing such as ion nitriding
processing, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating processing, TiN coating processing,
cryogenic treatment, and mirror surface lapping processing for reducing frictional
resistance with the top end face of the bevel gear pinion (3) and the bottom end face
of retaining annular ring (4) as well as on both surfaces of the low friction member (11
and 12) .
In an embodiment of the present invention, a working procedure for chucking the
shank portion (14) of the tool using the tool holding chuck (2) is described below.
Firstly, the taper collet (13) is inserted into the collet insertion hole (17), and then
female screw hole (19) at the end of the taper collet (13) is loosely screwed into the
male screw portion (20) at the tip of the draw screw (29).
The shank portion (14) of the tool is inserted into the tool holding hole (15) in a state
where the draw screw (29) is loosened in advance by the bevel gear pinion (3). In
further process, a screwdriver is inserted into the central hole of the retaining ring (4), and the tip of the adjustment tool is engaged with the polygonal hole (5) of the bevel gear pinion (3). The bevel gear pinion (3) is rotated in the tightening direction. As a result, the bevel gear (7) rotates in the tightening direction, and the draw screw (29) draws the taper collet (13) deep into the collet insertion hole (17). At this time, the provided slit (16) of the taper collet (13) is compressed by the tapered hole (17) which becomes thinner toward the end of the end hole, and the diameter of the tool holding hole (15) is reduced. Thus, the shank portion (14) of the tool is grasped with uniform force over the entire circumference.
On the contrary, to un-chuck the shank portion (14) it is preferable to rotate the bevel
gear pinion (3) in the loosening direction by the adjusting tool. The bevel gear pinion
(3) has an outer peripheral surface in contact with the inner peripheral surface of the
lateral hole (32) and it is centered by the inner peripheral surface of the lateral hole
(32). As a result, the bevel gear (7) and the bevel gear pinion (3) can mesh in an
appropriate state for smooth operation.
In a similar way, the bevel gear (7) has an outer peripheral surface in contact with the
inner peripheral surface of the lateral hole (25) and is centered by the inner peripheral
surface of the lateral hole (25). As a result, the bevel gear (7) and the bevel gear pinion
(3) can mesh in an appropriate state.
