FIELD FIELD 2023201377 06
[0001] The present invention relates to wall assemblies, and more particularly but not exclusively to rain screen and curtain wall facade assemblies applied to buildings, particularly high rise buildings.
[0002] Rain screen and curtain wall facades are applied to buildings, particularly high rise buildings, to provide the building with an outer covering. Rain screen and curtain wall facades generally consist of a light weight frame that supports panels. Typically the panels are glass panels, and the frame formed of aluminium extrusions.
[0003] Rain screen and curtain wall assemblies are attached to the basic structure of the building, and depend on the strength of the building for most of their structural integrity.
[0004] Disadvantages of known assemblies include: complexity, and therefore cost of assembly, and difficulty in accommodating expansion and contraction in the plane of the wall; the panel, such as a glass panel, must have sufficient strength so as to be structural members in the context of the rains screen or curtain wall assembly; and the assemblies are not able to efficiently and elegantly integrate photo voltaic panels and other active panels into the building.
[0005] A still further disadvantage is that there are a number of panel systems, each with their own components, that are not compatible with other systems.
[0006] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.

[0013] In the accompanying drawing there is schematically depicted in sectioned end elevation,
2023201377 06 part of a curtain wall assembly.
[0014] In the accompanying drawing there is schematically depicted portion 10 of a rain screen, curtain wall facade assembly. The portion 10 is a sectioned end elevation with the section being viewedinina ahorizontal viewed horizontal direction. direction.
[0015] The portion 10 includes a lower panel 11 and an upper panel 12 that are secured to a building 13.
[0016] The panels 11 and 12 may be generally square or rectangular in configuration, and are generally vertically oriented. The panel 12 has a lower edge 14 that is generally parallel and co extensive with respect to an upper edge, while also having upwardly extending generally parallel co-extensive side edges. The panel 11 has an upper edge 15 that is generally parallel and co extensive with respect to a lower edge, while also having generally upwardly extending parallel and co-extensive side edges.
[0017] The panels 11 and 12 may be of any desired material, such as glass, fibre cement, metal or timber.
[0018] The wall portion 10 includes a longitudinally elongated wall member 16 that is longitudinally horizontally extending. The wall member 16 includes a base 17 having a plurality of apertures 18 that are spaced along the base 17. Fasteners, such as threaded fasteners, (not illustrated) pass through the apertures 18 to fix the wall member 16 to the building 13.
[0019] The wall member 16 also includes a longitudinally extending "U" shaped part 19 providing a socket 20 that in this illustration is upwardly open. The part 19 is spaced from the building 13 and projects downwardly from the base 17.
[0020] Also extending from the base 17 is an upwardly extending flange 21 that is aligned with the strip 22 of the part 19.
WO2018/009957 WO 2018/009957 PCT/AU2017/000147 44
[0021] The panels 11 and 12 are each part of a panel assembly. The panel 11 is part of a lower panel assembly 23 while the other panel 12 is part of an upper panel assembly 24.
2023201377 06
[0022] The lower panel assembly 23 includes the panel 11, and a longitudinally elongated panel engaging member 25 fixed to the panel 11 by a fixing strip 26. The fixing strip 26 may be a tape or foam, and via an adhesive is fixed to the panel 11 and the flange 27 of the member 25. The strip 26 would structural fix the panel 11 to the flange 27.
[0023] The panel member 25 also includes a longitudinally extending socket part 28 providing a longitudinally extending socket 29 that is upwardly open.
[0024] The portion 10 also includes a longitudinally elongated fixing part 30. The part 30 includes a base 31 from which there project a pair of lower projections 32 and 33, and a pair of upper projections 34 and 35. The projections 32 and 33 project in an opposite direction relative to the projections 34 and 35 from the base 31.
[0025] Initially the fixing part 30 is attached to the lower panel assembly by having the projection 33 secured within the socket 29. The panel assembly 23 is then moved so as to locate the projection 32 in the socket 20. Thereafter, the panel assembly 23 is fixed to the wall member 16 and therefore the building 12.
[0026] Preferably, the panel assembly 23 also includes a "scaffolding" member 36 that is longitudinally elongated and located between the part 28 and flange 35. The scaffolding member 36 is movable relative to the member 25, but has a flange 37 fixed to the panel 11 by an adhesive or other means. Preferably, the flange 37 is attached to the panel 11 by means of a fixing strip 38 that may be an adhesive tape or an adhesive foam, that structurally secures the panel 11 to the flange 37.
[0027] The upper panel assembly 24 also includes a panel engaging member 25 however in the upper panel assembly 12, the panel member 25 includes the flange 27 but upwardly extending, and the part 28 with the socket 29 open downwardly. The panel assembly 24 is located by being lowered so that the projection 35 extends upwardly into the socket 29 of the assembly 24. Accordingly, the upper panel 24 is then secured to the wall member 16 and therefore the building 13.
WO2018/009957 WO 2018/009957 PCT/AU2017/000147 5 5
[0028] Preferably, the upper panel assembly 12 also includes a scaffolding member 36 as discussed above. The panel 12 would be fixed to the flange 37 by means of the fixing strip 38.
[0029] The base 31 has an inwardly extending slot 39 that would accommodate a fastener to secure an outer strip that is to extend between the panels 11 and 12, for aesthetic purposes.
2023201377
[0030] In respect of the above described preferred embodiment, the portion 10 depicts the securing of a lower panel 11 to an upper panel 12. However, the portion 10 is also used to attach two horizontally adjacent panels.
[0031] Preferably, the wall member 16 is a rolled steel section. Preferably, the panel member 25 is a rolled steel section. Preferably, the scaffold member 36 is a rolled steel section. Preferably, the fixing member 30 is moulded plastics material. Preferably, the strips 38 are tape.
[0032] The above described preferred embodiments have a number of advantages including permitting vertical and horizontal relative movement (generally parallel to the building 13) between, the panels 11 and 12, and the wall member 16, while preventing horizontal relative movement (generally perpendicular to the building 13) between, the panels 11 and 12, and the building 13. The relative movement is provided by movement of the scaffolding member 36 and member 25. A further advantage is the ease of assembly provided by the fixing part 30, while a still further advantage is provided by the scaffolding member 36 enabling the panels I Iand 12 to be non-structural if so required.
