Abstract

A RECYCLABLE PAIL DRUM FOR USE WITH A REPLACEABLE LID Abstract with Fig 1 A container 11 in the form of a recyclable pail drum comprising a container body 21, having a continuous circular side wall 22 slightly decreasing in diameter from the open top 23 to the integral bottom surface 24. A lid 31 has a plurality of partial screw threads 51 on the inner surface of the outer rim 41 which extends only a part of the circumference and further includes a plurality of ratchet locks 52 that are protrusions spaced around the circumference of the lid and on an inner surface of outer rim 41 for engaging ratchet locks 53 being protrusions on the outer side of the top of the drum 21. In this way the partial rotation of the lid 31 on the drum 21 drives at least one of the ratchet locks 52 on the lid 31 past the ratchet stop 53 on the drum 21 and prevents reverse unscrewing of the lid and thereby locks the lid 31 to the container body 21 when the lid is screw mounted to the container body. The structure of the lid is further enhanced by the recyclable pail drum lid 31 being readily removable after use from the drum 21 by means of including a frangible part 62 adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock 52 wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to partially unlock the lid and allow full removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual attachments. 21 50 23 353 53 283mm 22 380mm 263mm 24 FIGURE 1 1/8

A RECYCLABLE PAIL DRUM FOR USE WITH A REPLACEABLE LID
Field of the Invention
[001] The present invention relates to a recyclable pail drum.
[002]The invention has been developed primarily for use with liquid pail drum type containers such as oil containers of the size of up to about 20 litres and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. However, it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of use.
Background of the Invention
[003]In the field of containers, it is important to consider recycling so as to not waste important material and to avoid single use containers being dumped into landfill at an unacceptable and unsustainable rate.
[004]Generally, the recycling is undertaken with glass or tin containers by recovering the used container and chopping up the container for reprocessing into new material that can be used to create new containers. This is a heavy energy usage approach and can only be used with expensive materials like aluminium, or in simple processes like glass. However it runs into further troubles when impurities become a concern.
[005]On most containers it is important to have a tamperproof covering as the material needs to not be affected by the environment, not cause spillages and arrive at the customer site such that the manufacturer can warrant it to be in a good usable condition at the time of first opening. To achieve this, usually a container is formed of a container base and to this is plastic welded a lid closure. This weld therefore forms the liquid seal as well as forming the strength join for any handle. The lid closure includes a tamperproof tearing portion.
[006]The problem with this form of container is that to open the container the lid closure will include a tear system that needs to be broken so that the lid closure forms a lower part that stays welded to the container and an upper part that can be removed. The upper part might be able to
[007]It can be seen that this form of container is instantly not recyclable as the lower part remains fixed to the container body. There is no means of reusing. Usually the lid part is a different material to the base container so this type of container cannot be chopped up and reused as it is not a consistent single material. Complex separation techniques are not possible or not feasible.
[008]Also generally most containers having handles need to be fixed to the strength element. This will usually be to the part that remains attached to the container base. This introduces a third material and renders the container even less recyclable.
[009]Another problem in use, whether they are recycled, reused or go to waste is the volume of an empty container. An empty container needs to be transported after use for its next cycle. Transporting empty containers means that there is a high cost of transporting useless empty container volumes. The problem does not arise if the lid is removable. However this means the contents are not protected and the quality can be contaminated or there can be ready spillages of dangerous materials.
[0010] It can be seen that the prior art of containers has the problems of one or more of the following:
a) Not recyclable;
b) Not reusable;
c) Difficult to deconstruct after use;
d) Single use;
e) To have lid removable requires lid to be not locked and allow spillage or uncontrolled access to contents.
f) Retains affected container that cannot be reconfigured;
g) Not a design allowing ready carrying and reuse;
h) not a design allowing resealing and make tamperproof again.
[0011] The present invention seeks to provide recyclable pail drum, which will overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one or more of the deficiencies of the prior art, or to at least provide an alternative.
[0012] It is to be understood that, if any prior art information is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the information forms part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country.
Summary of the Invention
[0013] According to the present invention, a recyclable pail drum is provided by a recyclable pail drum comprising: a container body, having a continuous body with unitary walls and base and an open top; at least one container closing attachment; at least one lid locking attachment; a lid having at least one lid closing attachment engageable with the at least one container closing attachment for closing the lid to the covering body; at least one lid locking attachment engageable with the at least one container locking attachment for locking the lid to the covering body; a frangible part on the lid wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to allow unlocking of the lid to the covering body and removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual lid closing attachments or lid locking attachments; wherein the recyclable pail drum can be provided with a new lid and be reused.
[0014] Preferably the at least one container closing attachment and the lid is attachable to the container by a screw thread which includes a profile sufficient for forming a weight bearing frictional fit wherein the screw thread is formed as a plurality of non-overlapping sections extending around the lid circumference and one of the at least one lid locking attachment being adjacent one of the non-overlapping sections of the screw thread wherein the lid can close the container by screwing the lid to the container for the length of one of the non-overlapping sections.
[0015] Preferably the lid locking attachment is a ratchet lock for engaging at least one ratchet tooth on the lid to a ratchet stop on container or vice versa for locking the lid to the container when the lid is screwed in a first direction; and the frangible part allows removal of a ratchet tooth or ratchet stop to release the lid from the container.
[0016] In a preferred form the invention provides a recyclable pail drum comprising a container body, having: a continuous body with unitary walls and base and an open top; a screw thread near the open top; a lid having: a double rim able to receive a gasket or O-ring for overlying the open top of the container body and providing a liquid; a screw thread that extends only a part of the circumference and includes a profile to engage the container body screw thread when the lid is screw mountable to the container body sufficiently for forming a weight bearing frictional fit; at least one ratchet lock for locking the lid to the covering body when the lid is screw mounted to the container body; a handle attachable to the lid enabling carrying of recyclable pail drum; wherein the recyclable pail drum includes a frangible part on the lid adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to partially unlock the lid and allow full removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual attachments; and wherein the recyclable pail drum can be provided with a new lid and be reused.
[0017] The invention also provides a method of forming a recyclable pail drum in accordance with the steps of:
a) Providing a mould to form in a single unitary manner a container body, having
i) a continuous body with unitary walls and base and an open top and
ii) a screw thread near the open top;
iii) at least one ratchet stop;
b) Forming a lid with:
i) A screw thread to interfit the screw thread of the container
ii) At least one ratchet lock
iii) A frangible part on the lid adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock
c) joining the two parts in a locking screwing action by engaging and rotation in a first rotational direction to form a closed tamperproof recyclable pail drum; d) breaking the frangible part on the lid adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock to allow disengagement of the ratchet lock and removal by unscrewing in the direction opposing the first rotational direction e) wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to partially unlock the lid and allows at least partial rotation full removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual attachments such that the container is readily reusable with a new lid.
[0018] It is therefore important that to be recyclable the container must be:
a) Closeable
b) Tamperproof
c) Openable
d) Refitted to be closeable after refilling and to be tamperproof again before reuse and allow opening at reuse.
[0019] It is a preferable novel feature that the closing mechanism is operative to also allow carrying and does not prevent recycling.
[0020] Other aspects of the invention are also disclosed.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[0021] Notwithstanding any other forms which may fall within the scope of the present invention, a preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a body of a recyclable pail drum for use with a replaceable lid in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention: Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic overhead view the body of the recyclable pail drum of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an underneath view of a replaceable lid for use on the recyclable pail drum of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic side view of the replaceable lid of Fig. 3 for use on the recyclable pail drum of Fig. 1;

Description of Preferred Embodiments
[0022] It should be noted in the following description that like or the same reference numerals in different embodiments denote the same or similar features.
[0023] Referring to the drawings, there is shown a container 11 in the form of a recyclable pail drum comprising a container body 21, having a continuous circular side wall 22 slightly decreasing in diameter from the open top 23 to the integral bottom surface 24. The container body is formed by moulding in one part and preferably as will be described by the moulding process of "in mould labelling". A lid 31 is mounted to the top of the container body 22.
[0024] Therefore, as shown in Fig 1, there is provided a recyclable pail drum 21 comprising a continuous frustoconical body 22 with unitary angled walls between a flat base 24 and a parallel flat open top 23. A plurality of partial circumferential external screw threads 50 is on an outer side of the wall 22 of the body 21 near the open top 23. A plurality of ratchet stops 53 are spaced around adjacent the end of non-continuous screw threads 50.
[0025] Referring to Fig 2 the overhead view shows that the open top body 22 of the recyclable pail drum 21 has a smaller base 24 than the top 23 due to the inwardly sloping walls 22 shown in Fig. 1. This allows a ready compact stacking of multiple drums 21. This has benefit in first use and in recycled use.
[0026] Referring to Fig. 3 there is provided a lid 31 for the drum 21 to form together a closed container 11. The lid 31 has double concentric rims 41, 42 able to receive a gasket or O-ring in the annular trough 43 therebetween for overlying the open circular top 23 of the container body 21 and providing a liquid seal.
[0027] The lid 31 also has a plurality of partial screw threads 51 on the inner surface of the outer rim 41. The partial screw threads 51 extends only a part of the circumference and includes a profile to engage the container body partial screw threads 50 on the outer top side 23 of the drum body 22 so that the lid 31 is screw mountable to the container body 21 sufficiently for forming a weight bearing frictional fit. In particular the interlocking partial circumferential screw threads 50, 51 on the drum 21 and lid 31 respectively means that only a partial rotation of the lid 31 to the drum 21 will result in the screw mounting.
[0028] The lid 31 further includes a plurality of ratchet locks 52 that are protrusions spaced around the circumference of the lid and on an inner surface of outer rim 41 for engaging ratchet locks 53 being protrusions on the outer side of the top of the drum 21.
[0029] The lid 31 further includes a strengthening recess shaping around a screw threaded opening 34 that can be used to pour liquid out of the container and closed by a overlying screw thread cap. The threaded opening can include a ratchet thread 39 to provide a tamper proof container so contents are ensured protected until use. On the underneath of the lid 31 and adjacent the opening 34 is an anti-glug funnel 35 that has a channel that extends from the opening into the internal volume of container. In this way when the liquid is being poured out of the opening 34, and particularly when it is viscous liquid like oils, any coverage of the opening by the oil that could result in a glugging action is compensated by the air channel of the anti-glug funnel 35 providing air into the internal volume and thereby minimizing glugging.
[0030] Referring to Fig. 4 there is shown an outer shoulder 44 that overlies the internal double rims 41, 42 and annular channel 43. To the inner top side of this shoulder 44 are two opposing partially circumferential protruding rims 45 that provide end mounts for a handle 49 to be attached in a swivel arrangement. As shown in Fig 5 when not in use the handle 49 can swivel to be flat against the top surface 32 of the lid 31 and below the upper edge of the upper rims 45. When in use the handle 49 can swivel into an upright position allowing a user's hand to fit between the handle 49 and the upper surface 32 of the lid 31 enabling carrying of the recyclable pail drum 11.
[0031] The lid can also include a secondary opening 36 that can be a larger filling hole that is plugged after filling by a stopper having a surrounding plurality of cam ratchet formations to allow the plug to be inserted and plug the hole but prevent ready removal of the plug.
[0032] As shown in Fig. 4 the top of the upper rims 45 also extends above the upwardly extending threaded opening 34 and screw cap attached thereto. Further the circumference of the upper rims 45 allow for fitting within the base 24 of another drum and therefore allow ready stacking. The base 24 can include a volume by a protruding bottom rim to at least partially enclose the volume formed by the upper rims 45 and add further stability to stacking of full completed containers 11.
[0033] It can be seen that all of the operational parts of the drum are mounted on the lid 31. Therefore the lid can be manufactured separately and possibly be formed of metal sheet while the body of the drum can be moulded separately and even be formed using in mould labelling so as to minimize the process steps of manufacture.
[0034] The separation of operational parts of the drum being mounted on the lid 31 also means the operational parts all fit within a controlled limited volume meaning there are little if any outwardly protruding parts allowing for close packing and stacking when in a full condition.
[0035] Further the separation of the functions of the lid and body means the differing materials can be separately reused or recycled. Plastic parts of the lid can be removed leaving 100% recovery and recycling of the metal.
[0036] The structure of the lid is further enhanced by the recyclable pail drum lid 31 being readily removable after use from the drum 21 by means of including a frangible part 62 adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock 52 wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to partially unlock the lid and allow full removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual attachments.
[0037] As shown in Fig. 7 the frangible part 62 cut be a partial cutaway of the lower outer rim 41 of the lid that is sufficiently strong to include the ratchet stop and perform the locking force with the ratchet lock moulded on the drum 21 but has sufficient cutaway and frangibility to allow breaking, after container has been emptied, to separate the ratchet stop and thereby allow reverse screwing to release the lid3l from the container 21.
[0038] This further shows the separation of the functions of the lid and body means and means there can be the avoidance of usual structure of part locking and unlocking means on both the lid and container that had previously required multiplicity of materials on both lid and container and thereby substantial difficulty in recycling. This difficulty resulted in not bothering to recycle and thereby extensive waste.
[0039] The recyclable pail drum 21 can be provided with a new lid 31 and be reused. However another substantial benefit is that the pail drums 21 can be stacked within each other so that transport of multiple empty drums can be readily transported for further recycling and use.
[0040] In particular the container is recyclable as it was initially closeable in a tamperproof manner until it was opened and contents used. Then the lid was removable without retaining any parts on the container body and refitted in a liquid sealing manner and to again be closeable after refilling in a tamperproof again before reuse and allow opening at a later reuse time.
[0041] In this embodiment the need of liquid sealing has been provided by the double rim and seal.
[0042] In this embodiment the need of ready reuse of containers in a non-complex manner is achieved by forming a lid that is fully removable without affecting the container.
[0043] In this embodiment all of the attachments are on the lid.
[0044] Manufacture
[0045] The term "in mould labelling" is directly derived from the technique: a preprinted polypropylene (PP) label is placed in a mould. This mould has the shape of the end product, e.g. the shape of a pail drum. Then the molten PP is added to the mould. It fuses with the label, and while curing, takes the shape of the mould. The label and packaging become one.
[0046] In mould labelling offers several major advantages: a) Maximum print quality The offset printing technique ensures high-resolution images. Besides, you can decorate all the sides of a container with one single label. b) Strong and hygienic In mould labels resist humidity and big changes in temperature: the best solution to decorate plastic containers for frozen and refrigerated products! In mould labels are also scratch resistant, cannot crack and are not susceptible to wrinkles. c) Shorter production time and lower production costs During the in mould labeling process containers are produced and decorated in one single step. Storage of blank containers becomes unnecessary, storage and transport costs belong to the past. d) Environmentally-friendly In mould labelling saves the environment: the packaging and the label consist of the same material and can therefore be fully recycled. e) Wide range of look & feel options The same plastic packaging product can be decorated with a wide range of different materials, inks and lacquers. This allows you to differentiate your product on the shelf. f) Quick design changeovers It only takes a shift from one label design to another on your IML automation to make a quick changeover. There is almost no production loss during the start-up of a new design.
[0047] In a particularly preferred and novel and innovative embodiment of the invention there is a method of forming a recyclable pail drum in accordance with the steps of: a) Providing a mould to form in a single unitary manner a container body, having "a continuous body with unitary walls and base and an open top and * a screw thread near the open top;
"at least one ratchet stop; b) Forming a lid with: *A screw thread to interfit the screw thread of the container *At least one ratchet lock * A frangible part on the lid adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock c) joining the two parts in a locking screwing action by engaging and rotation in a first rotational direction to form a closed tamperproof recyclable pail drum; d) breaking the frangible part on the lid adjacent at least part of the ratchet lock to allow disengagement of the ratchet lock and removal by unscrewing in the direction opposing the first rotational direction wherein the breaking of the frangible part aids to partially unlock the lid and allows at least partial rotation full removal of the lid from the container with the container body having no residual attachments such that the container is readily reusable with a new lid.
