Description

BABY SLEEPING BAG
Technical Field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a baby sleeping bag.
Background [0002] Baby sleeping bags are a convenient and safe alternative to traditional bedding, such as blankets, sheets and quilts, as they prevent a baby’s head from getting covered from loose bedding, thus avoiding the risk of the baby being smothered. In addition, baby sleeping bags prevent the baby from kicking-off bedding and waking up from the cold, for example, as the torso and legs of the baby are contained within the sleeping bag.
[0003] Baby sleeping bags differ in design and purpose and typically include armholes or long sleeves to suit specific seasons and temperatures. Parents are therefore required to purchase multiple baby sleeping bags to suit the specific seasons and temperatures, which can become costly.
[0004] Baby sleeping bags with a sleeveless design are intended to provide ventilation to reduce the risk of overheating by exposing the arms of the baby. However, temperatures tend to decrease during the course of the day or night causing babies to wake up from the cold. To provide extra warmth during the cooler periods in the day or night, parents would typically resort to dressing the baby with additional clothes to keep the baby’s arms warm or changing to a long sleeve sleeping bag. This, however, causes the baby to wake up, thus disturbing their sleep.
Object [0005] It is an object of the present disclosure to substantially overcome or ameliorate one or more of the above disadvantages, or at least provide a useful alternative.
2019101034 10 Sep 2019
Summary [0006] In an aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a baby sleeping bag, comprising:
a main body for covering the torso and legs of a baby, the main body defining armholes on opposed sides of the main body, and a neckhole between the armholes; and at least one sleeve portion removably attached to the main body by a zipper adjacent one of the armholes, wherein the at least one sleeve portion is configured to substantially cover an arm of the baby extending through said one of the armholes.
[0007] The main body may further comprise one or more flap portions adjacent said one of the armholes. The one or more flap portions may be configured to substantially cover the zipper.
[0008] The zipper may be an open-end zipper comprising a zipper stop and a retaining box. The zipper may extend around said one of the armholes such that the zipper stop is adjacent the retaining box.
[0009] The main body may comprise at least one upper edge extending between the neckhole and said one of the armholes. The zipper stop and the retaining box may be disposed adjacent the at least one upper edge.
[0010] Each of the main body and the at least one sleeve portion may comprise material formed from cotton, bamboo, viscose or a combination thereof.

Description of Embodiments [0021] Fig. 1 shows a baby sleeping bag 10 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The baby sleeping bag 10 comprises a main body 100 for covering the torso and legs of a baby, and at least one sleeve portion 200a, 200b. The main body 100 defines left and right armholes 102a, 102b on opposed sides of the main body 100 through which the arms of the baby can extend. The armholes 102a, 102b are also sized and shaped to allow for ventilation therethrough. The main body 100 also defines a neckhole 104 between the armholes 102a, 102b through which the head and neck of the baby can extend.
[0022] With reference to Fig. 2, the main body 100 comprises left and right shoulder portions 106a, 106b on either side of the neckhole 104. Each of the shoulder portions 106a, 106b has an upper edge 108a, 108b that extends between the neckhole 104 and the respective armholes 102a, 102b. In other embodiments, the upper edge 108a, 108b may be a shoulder seam. Further, each of the shoulder portions 106a, 106b has a length L that extends past the shoulder of the baby to a proximal portion of the arm of the baby. In this way, the main body 100 is in the form of a ‘short-sleeve’ main body 100.
[0023] The main body 100 further comprises two flap portions 110, 112 that are stitched adjacent respective armholes 102a, 102b, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Each of the flap portions 110, 112 include an inner flap portion 110a, 110b and an outer flap portion 112a, 112b that overlaps the inner flap portion 110a, 110b. The inner and outer flap portions 110a, 110b, 112a, 112b each extend around the respective armholes 102a, 102b.
2019101034 10 Sep 2019 [0024] Turning back to Figs. 1 and 2, the main body 100 also defines an opening 114 on a front portion 116 of the main body 100. The opening 114 extends from the neckhole 104 to a lower region 118 of the front portion 116. The opening 114 is closeable by a closure mechanism 120 that extends along the opening 114. The closure mechanism 120 is in the form of a two-way zipper 120 that allows the opening 114 to be opened for access to the interior of the main body 100 for easy insertion and removal of the baby. An upper zip safety flap 122 and a lower zip safety flap 124 are also provided to cover respective upper and lower portions of the zipper 120. This protects the baby when a part of the zipper 120, such as a slider, for example, is in a position which could contact the baby. Each of the upper and lower zip safety flaps 122, 124 has a snap fastener 126 to secure the upper and lower zip safety flaps 122, 124 over the zipper 120.
[0025] In other embodiments, the opening 114 may be shorter than illustrated or be positioned elsewhere such as on the side of the main body 100 or in a curved formed across the main body 100. In yet other embodiments, the opening 114 may be closeable by any other suitable closure mechanism 120 such as, for example, hook and loop fasteners or snap fasteners.
[0026] The at least one sleeve portion 200a, 200b is removably attached to the main body 100 adjacent one of the armholes 102a, 102b. In this embodiment, left and right sleeve portions 200a, 200b are provided. Fig. 5 shows an example of a left arm sleeve portion 200a. The sleeve portion 200a is configured to substantially cover the left arm of the baby extending through the armhole 102a. The sleeve portion 200a defines a proximal aperture 202a and a distal aperture 204a. The proximal aperture 202a substantially corresponds to the armhole 102a of the main body 100. An envelope cuff 206a is provided adjacent the distal aperture 204a. Fig. 6 shows an example of a right arm sleeve portion 200b. The sleeve portion 200b is configured to substantially cover the right arm of the baby extending through the armhole 102b. The sleeve portion 200b also defines a proximal aperture 202b and a distal aperture 204b. The proximal aperture 202b substantially corresponds to the armhole 102b of the main body 100. An envelope cuff 206b is provided adjacent the distal aperture 204b.
[0027] In some embodiments, each of the envelope cuffs 206a, 206b of the sleeve portions 200a, 200b may be folded over to form a mitten to cover the hand of the baby.
2019101034 10 Sep 2019 [0028] The main body 100 and the at least one sleeve portion 200a, 200b each comprises material formed from cotton, bamboo, viscose or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the material may be composed of multiple layers of fabrics, which may be the same fabric or which may be different types of fabric. For example, the inner and outer layers may be formed from cotton, whilst one or more intermediate layers between the inner and outer layers may be formed from cotton or polyester. The different layers may be selected to provide the desired thermal characteristics. The choice of material can be selected depending on the climate in which the baby sleeping bag 10 is to be used. For example, material having a higher thermal rating can be used for colder climes compared to material having a lower thermal rating, which would be more suited for warmer climes.
[0029] The sleeve portions 200a, 200b are each removably attached to the main body 100 by a zipper 300. Each zipper 300 is in the form of an open-end nylon coil zipper 300 having a first zipper part (not shown) stitched to the main body 100 adjacent the respective armhole 102a, 102b, and a second zipper part 302 stitched to the respective sleeve portion 200a, 200b adjacent the proximal aperture 202a, 202b. In this embodiment, the first zipper part has a zipper stop, first teeth elements, and a pin. The first zipper part is disposed between the inner and outer flap portions 110a, 110b, 112a, 112b of the main body 100 and extends around the respective armhole 102a, 102b. The second zipper part 302 has a retaining box (not shown), a slider 304 and second teeth elements 306. The second zipper part 302 extends around the proximal aperture 202a, 202b of the respective sleeve portion 200a, 200b.
[0030] It will be appreciated that the slider 304, the retaining box, the zipper stop and the pin may be disposed on either the first zipper part or the second zipper part 302 so long as the zipper 300 is still capable of removably attaching the sleeve potions 200a, 200b to the main body 100.
[0031] To attach either of the sleeve portions 200a, 200b to the main body 100, a user simply engages the pin with the retaining box and then manipulates the slider 304 of the zipper 300 so that the first teeth elements engage the second teeth elements 306 to form a chain. Once attached, the zipper stop is positioned adjacent the retaining box. In this position, the zipper stop and the retaining box are also disposed adjacent the upper edge 108a, 108b. Fig. 1 shows an example of both sleeve portions 200a, 200b attached to the main body 100 by their respective zippers 300. The inner and outer flap portions 110a, 110b, 112a, 112b
2019101034 10 Sep 2019 adjacent each armhole 102a, 102b of the main body 100 span across and substantially cover the respective zippers 300 so as to protect the baby from being in contact with the zippers 300. To remove either of the sleeve portions 200a, 200b from the main body 100, a user simply manipulates the slider 304 of the zipper 300 so that the first teeth elements disengage from the second teeth elements 306.
[0032] Figs. 7 to 9 show a baby sleeping bag 20 according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. The baby sleeping bag 20 is substantially similar to the baby sleeping bag 10 of Fig. 1 and like features have been indicated with like reference numerals. However, in this embodiment, the main body 400 comprises left and right shoulder portions 402a, 402b that each has a length Li that extends up to the shoulder of the baby. In this way, the main body 400 is in the form of a ‘sleeveless’ main body 400.
[0033] It will be appreciated that the baby sleeping bag 10, 20 and in particular the main body 100, 400 can be provided for varying sizes depending on the age of the baby.
[0034] The above described embodiments have numerous advantages. The baby sleeping bag 10, 20 is versatile as it used for both colder and warmer climes, thus eliminating the need to purchase multiple baby sleeping bags for specific seasons and temperatures. Further, the sleeve portions 200a, 200b can be easily attached to the main body 100, 400 to provide extra warmth to the baby without the need to remove the baby from the baby sleeping bag 10, 20. Likewise, the sleeve portions 200a, 200b can be easily removed from the main body 100, 400 to provide extra ventilation without the need to remove the baby from the baby sleeping bag 10, 20. Further still, the zipper 300 ensures that the sleeve portions 200a, 200b can be attached and removed easily and efficiently without disturbing the baby’s sleep.
[0035] It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the above-described embodiments, without departing from the broad general scope of the present disclosure. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
