Description
1 A BASSINET ASSEMBLY AND A METHOD OF FORMING THE SAME Field [0001] The present invention relates to bassinets, more particularly to a bassinet insert that can be converted into a bassinet. Background [0002] Bassinets and bassinet inserts are known. They provide a small sleeping area that allows a newborn to feel cozy and safe. Known bassinets typically comprise a receptacle mounted on a stand. The presence of a stand can be bulky and thus difficult to transport. Known bassinet inserts typically do not include a stand, which therefore provides a more portable and less expensive alternative to that of a bassinet. [0003] Known bassinet inserts are typically placed unsecured on a raised surface or rest on the edges of the side walls of a cot so that parents do not need to bend down to attend to the infant if otherwise placed on the ground. However, placing an unsecured bassinet insert on a raised surface could lead to the bassinet insert falling off causing harm to the infant. Further, resting the bassinet on the edges of the side walls of a cot does not provide a robust attachment, resulting in an uneven sleeping surface, which may be hazardous to the infant. Object of the Invention [0004] It is an object of the present invention to substantially overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the above disadvantages, or to at least provide a useful alternative. Summary of the Invention [0005] In a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a bassinet body comprising: a frame; and a receptacle attached to the frame and being adapted to receive an infant therein, wherein the frame is configured to be attached to a cot headboard and a cot footboard to form a bassinet.
2 [0006] The frame preferably comprises a base member, a plurality of support posts extending upwardly from the base member, and a plurality of side panels disposed between the plurality of support posts. [0007] The plurality of support posts comprises at least one aperture extending therethrough. [0008] The base member is preferably a solid panel. [0009] The receptacle is preferably formed by a fabric material. The fabric material is preferably folded over to form a base and side walls. [0010] The frame is preferably made of wood. [0011] In a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a bassinet assembly, comprising: a cot headboard; a cot footboard; and a bassinet body having a receptacle, wherein the bassinet body is configured to be attached to the cot headboard and the cot footboard to form a bassinet. [0012] The bassinet body preferably comprises a frame. [0013] The cot headboard preferably comprises at least one recess. The cot footboard preferably comprises at least one recess. [0014] The bassinet body is preferably attached to the cot headboard and cot footboard by securing means. The securing means is preferably screws. [0015] The cot headboard and the cot footboard are preferably attached to opposite sides of the bassinet body. [0016] In a third aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a kit comprising: a cot having a body, a headboard and a footboard; and a bassinet body having a receptacle, the bassinet body being configured to attach to the cot headboard and the cot footboard to form a bassinet.
3 [0017] In a fourth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method of forming a bassinet, the method comprising: detaching a cot headboard and a cot footboard from a cot; and attaching the cot headboard and the cot footboard to a bassinet body having a receptacle. [0018] In a fifth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method of converting a bassinet to a cot, the method comprising: detaching a cot headboard and a cot footboard from the bassinet; and attaching the cot headboard and the cot footboard to a cot body. Brief Description of the Drawings [0019] A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described hereinafter, by way of an example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: [0020] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known cot; [0021] Figure 2 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a bassinet insert; [0022] Figure 3 is an exploded view of a bassinet formed by attaching the cot headboard and cot footboard to the bassinet insert of Figure 2; and [0023] Figure 4 is a perspective view of the assembled bassinet of Figure 3. Description of a Preferred Embodiment [0024] Figure 1 shows a known cot 10. The cot 10 comprises a cot headboard 11, a cot footboard 12, two side walls 13a, 13b attached to the cot headboard 11 and the cot footboard 12, and a mattress base 14. The cot headboard 11, cot footboard 12, side walls 13a, 13b and mattress base 14 together form an enclosure to receive an infant therein. The cot headboard 11 and the cot footboard 12 are detachable from the two side walls 13a, 13b. The cot headboard 11 and the cot footboard 12 also comprise internally threaded recesses 24 located on their inner surfaces. [0025] Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a bassinet insert 16. The bassinet insert 16 comprises a wooden frame 17 having a base 18 and four support posts 19a-d that extend from the base 18. The frame 17 further comprises four side panels 20a-d that span across the upper ends of the 4 support posts 19a-d so as to form an open top. The bassinet insert 16 further comprises a receptacle 21 for receiving an infant therein. The receptacle 21 is formed by a cloth material that is folded over to create a base and side walls. The receptacle 21 is received in the open top and attached to two opposite side panels 20c, 20d. Each of the support posts 19a-d comprises two spaced-apart apertures 22 extending laterally therethrough. [0026] The construction of a bassinet 25 will now be described with reference to Figures 3 and 4. Firstly, the cot headboard 11 and the cot footboard 12 are removed from the cot 10. The cot headboard 11 is then positioned on one side of the bassinet insert 16 and secured into place with screws 23 that pass through the apertures 22 of the frame 17 and terminate in the internally threaded recesses 24 of the cot headboard 11. The cot footboard 12 is then positioned on a side of the bassinet insert 16 opposite to that of the cot headboard 11. The cot footboard 12 is also secured into place with screws 23 that pass through the apertures 22 of the frame 17 and terminate in the internally threaded recesses 24 of the cot footboard 12. The assembly of the bassinet insert 16, the cot headboard 11 and the cot footboard 12 form a bassinet 25, as shown in Figure 4. [0027] The embodiment described above has numerous advantages. Firstly, it allows a quick and relatively simple construction of a bassinet using a bassinet insert and existing cot parts. This reduces the costs incurred in purchasing a full bassinet, which is otherwise bulky and not as portable as a bassinet insert and reduces material waste. Further, the bassinet assembly securely elevates the bassinet insert, eliminating the need for parents to bend over to attend to the infant. [0028] Although the invention has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
