Abstract

DECORATIVE LIGHT BOX 5 A light box comprises a decorative face panel stretched over a frame and a backing on which is mounted one or more light sources. The face panel is generally opaque with one or more translucent or transparent areas and one of the light sources comprises LEDs shining through one or more prismatic lenses and other light sources are LED strip lights. ii 1/4 I -

Description

1 DECORATIVE LIGHT BOX FIELD OF THE INVENTION 5 This invention relates to light boxes designed to be used as decorative features. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Light boxes have been used for a long time by draftsmen to copy images from 10 paper or similar semi translucent material. They consist of a relatively flat horizontal box which has a light source inside such as a lamp and a transparent lid such as glass forming the top of the box. Accordingly any image on say, paper, which is placed on the lid will be illuminated from underneath and it is easy to copy it onto tracing paper placed over it. 15 Light boxes are also used to view x-rays and other scans recorded on transparent film. In this case the flat box is usually mounted vertically on a wall to facilitate viewing the scan. In all these applications the light source provides a constant white light so that the image is illuminated brightly and uniformly. 20 OBJECT OF THE INVENTION However It is an object of the present invention to provide a light box which has one or more varying light sources illuminating a decorative face panel. 25 STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention a light box comprises a decorative face panel stretched over a frame and a backing on which is mounted one or more light 30 sources.
2 Preferably the face panel is generally opaque with one or more translucent or transparent areas. Preferably at least one of the light sources comprises LEDs shining through one 5 or more prismatic lenses. Preferably the light source has two contra rotating prismatic lenses. Alternatively one or more light sources are LED strip lights. 10 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS An embodiment of the invention is now described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 15 Fig 1 shows a decorative light box hanging on a wall Fig 2 shows the box of Fig 1 mounted behind a fish tank Fig 3 is a perspective view of the box of Fig 1 with the decorative face panel removed 20 Fig 4a is a plan view of the central light source of the box of Fig 1 and Fig 4b is an elevation of the light source of Fig 4a. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION 25 The light box of Figs 1 and 2 is a relatively flat rectangular box 1 with a generally dark opaque face panel 2 which has at its centre a translucent image of the earth 3 and a multitude of pin holes 4 scattered over the rest of the panel. Fig 3 reveals the construction of the box which consists of rectangular frame 5 on which face panel 2 is stretched and backing 6 on which light sources 7, 8, 9 and 10 are 30 mounted.
3 Light sources 7,8 and 9 consist of strips of white light emitting diodes, LEDs, and central light source 10 consists of different colored LEDs 11 with contra rotating prismatic lenses 12 and 13 as shown in Figs 4a and 4b. All light sources are powered by a 12 volt transformer 14 which connects to the mains by plug 15. 5 LEDs 11 are a mixture of red, blue, green and white light emitting diodes and circuitry 16 causes the different colored LEDs to light up and fade out in sequence. Cog 17 is driven by electric motor 18 and rotates prismatic lenses 12 and 13 in opposite directions. Accordingly when powered, light source 10 10 produce a kaleidoscopic flashing of multicolored light similar to that of the multi mirrored light balls in traditional dance halls. It will be apparent that light source 10 shines through translucent earth image 3 at the centre of face panel 2 producing a pleasing multicolored dynamic display. 15 Light sources 7, 8 and 9 illuminate pin holes 4 in face panel 2 producing a star lit night sky as a background effect to earth image 3. The result is a novel light display which can be used to decorate many different places. VARIATIONS 20 It will be realized that the foregoing has been given by way of illustrative example only and that all other modifications and variations as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of the invention as herein set forth. For example many different motifs could be 25 used on face panel 2 and many different light sources could be used to back light face panel 2. For example fibre optic lighting could be used in place of LEDs. Throughout the description and claims of this specification the words "comprise" and variations of that word such as "comprises" and "comprising" are not intended to exclude other additives components integers or steps. 30
