AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Innovation Patent FIREWOOD PACKAGING MACHINE The following statement is a full description of this Innovation. 22 March 2011 FIREWOOD PACKAGING MACHINE Description: Packaging firewood or like in bags or boxes is a laborious task, costing money in both labour and material. Also one problem with firewood bags is the "sweating" of firewood resulting in condensed water in the bags. We have been toying with an idea to bundle the firewood somehow to stop the sweating and also reduce the cost of packaging material and labour. Finally we managed to solve the problem. This innovation reduces the manual labour when packaging firewood or like. This innovation reduces the cost of packaging material. Below the technical description of the machine: 1) In this case R1 is the driving roller. Any other roller may drive depending on the particular implementation. Rollers 1 and 2 should be small which means that R5 is better suited to be the driving roller. 2) R2 moves right allowing the firewood to be inserted. R4 and/or R5 are moved to increase the size of the loop should the amount of firewood require so. 3) R2 moves back next to R1 capturing the firewood in the belt loop. 4) R4 and/or R5 are used to loosen and tighten the belt as required. 5) As R1 rotates the belt is being kept at tension by R4 and/or R5 forcing the rotating bundle of firewood obtain the smallest space possible. Tightening of the belt can be either spring loaded or controlled by hydraulic pressure or like. 1 6) After so many rotations a string is fed through the gap between rollers RI and R2 to wound around the tightened bundle of firewood. The rotating movement of the bundle of firewood and belt pull the string in. Resisting the string feed creates a tightly wound string. Running the string over it self removes the need of tying the start of the string. 7) The string is then moved over the length of the firewood to form a tight package (very much as happens inside a hay baler). 8) Roller R2 is moved to the right and the belt can be tightened further to lift the bundle up for ease of removal of the bundle. 9) End of the string is tied to form a convenient handle to carry the bundle. 10) The unit can be used as a "top loader" as described above or a "front loader". 11) "Front loader" is cheaper to make as the movement of R2 is not required. The belt is loosened by moving roller R4 and/or R5. Side wall hatch is opened when the belt is loose and firewood is fed via the hatch into the loop. 12) Adjustable side walls cater for different lengths of firewood bundles within reason due to the width of the belt. 13) Using natural fiber for the string allows everything to be burnt. Nothing to throw away. Prototyping proved that the concept worked beyond expectations. The bundle became very robust tolerating tossing around without disintegrating. 2
