Description
00 DESCRIPTION This invention fulfills a need to automatically impart a clockwise or anti clockwise rotary increment to a cylinder piston shaft, once every return stroke or once at the OO commencement of every outgoing power stroke.
Prior art involves attachment of expensive rotary actuators. This invention simplifies the requirements and may be totally contained within the cylinder.
CO The invention comprises a combination of driving and driven cams arranged so they Oact on each other to rotate a lineally moving piston shaft during a portion of its 00 travel.
OThe invention comprises in each configuration a fixed member attached to the cylinder end and a mechanism fixed to or part of the movable piston shaft In 4 configurations of the invention rotation is caused when:- In FIG 1: A female cam (being screwed into the piston shaft) is driven onto and withdrawn from a male cam attached centrally to the hub of a radial ratchet (e) which is free to rotate in one direction only and is fixed to the cylinder end.
In FIG 2: A male cam attached to the piston shaft via the said ratchet is pushed through and withdrawn from a stationary female cam fixed to the cylinder end.
In FIG 3: A male cam is fixed to the piston shaft and driven through and withdrawn from a female cam attached centrally to the hub of the said ratchet (e) which is in turn fixed to the cylinder end.
In FIG 4: A female cam is attached to the piston shaft via the said ratchet and is pushed onto and withdrawn from a male cam which is fixed to the cylinder end.
In all of the above configurations of the invention, the male cam is configured to provide the required radial movement by way of an inclined plane, biased radially and central to the axis of the square, hexagonal, fluted or other shaped bar which forms the male cam.
FIG 6 and the female cam is configured to fit the section selected for the said male cam. This is formed in a short piece in the form of a replaceable ?plug? FIG 6. This material may be phosphorous bronze oil filled nylon or other load bearing low friction material including hardened steel. In the case of the fluted male cam, the female cam contains pins or balls which protrude internally to engage in the flutes.
00 When the said male cam is pushed or pulled through the said female cam described as the said plug attached to the said ratchet hub; then rotary motion is imparted in one (Nl Sdirection for the duration of the contact and movement in one direction between the said male and female cams 00 This invention is a device which enables a cylinder to turn its own shaft anticlockwise or clockweise for a proportion of its own travel.
