Description
IPAustralia AUSTRALIA P/o00/011ol PATENTS-TRADEMARKS-DESIGNS Patents Act 1990 Regulation 3.2 Revised 5/99 Original Complete Specification Standard Patent Subject to the provisions of the Patents Act, information provided on this form may be made publicly available, including on the Intemrnet.
Invention Title Improvements to blind flying aids.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing known to me: This invention is described in the following statement: The object of the invention is to improve blind flying aids, wherein a pilot may observe an image which will allow control of aircraft flying., in conditions where outside visibility is obscured.
Previous blind flying relies on a pilot observing instruments at arms length on an instrument panel attached to the aircraft. Such instruments may include an artificial horizon, altimeter, directional gyro, airspeed indicator, for basic control aid, and by interpreting changes of readings on those instruments, the pilot can maintain safe flight using corrective control measures.
Loss of a visible horizon outside a flying aircraft is particularly dangerous and can lead to loss of control of the aircraft.
This invention embodies linking instrument readings electronically to a virtual reality screen utilising a computer and software programmed to indicate orientation of aircraft in relation to a reference plane such as an outside horizon along with other instrument readings.
Although the invention may well be applicable to other uses, its principle use is for aircraft, and for convenience but without limitation will be described as applicable to aircraft.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1, shows an aircraft representation, Figure 2, instrument panel.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2.
1I, shows an aircraft embodying instrument panel 2, containing instruments 3,4,5,6 representing, artificial horizon, directional gyro, altimeter, and airspeed indicator respectively, shown on Figure 2.
A cable 7, links the above instruments 3,4,5 6 to a computer 8, containing software 9, which processes readings from those instruments 3,4,5 6 into graphically presented images, and transmitted by cables 7, to a virtual reality screen 10, mounted on a pilot's head by way of a visor 11, such that he sees in effect an outside graphic image depicting the position of the aircraft in relation to horizon. It may also show readings of instruments 3, 4, 5 6. The horizon image graphically simulates an outside horizon as a pilot would see in clear unobscured conditions. Power for operation may be self contained or integrated to the aircraft's electrical system activated by switch 12.
