A glass ceramic cooking hob unit (11) has multiple cooking zones (14) heated by inductive heating elements (16) having capacitive sensing elements (22) which sense the existence of a cooking vessel (25). A single heating control switch (21) operates on any cooking zone selected by the user (27).
