EMI1.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

EMI1.1
The invention relates to a new distributor for ignition devices on internal combustion engines which, according to Bd: can be used in conjunction with an ignition voltage source for high-voltage direct current or alternating current of sufficient frequency. This distributor is particularly suitable for ignition systems in which the ignition voltage is taken from a tube generator.
The new distributor is a so-called tube distributor, the characteristic of which is that each candle series of the ignition cylinder is assigned at least one valve tube circuit and the electricity transfer between the cylinder electrodes of a candle series is influenced for the duration of the ignition interval or a little longer so that the ignition current in the respective candle series is influenced can flow. The ignition interval is understood to mean that time segment during which the ignition voltage is applied to the spark plug electrodes.
A manifold with valve tubes is already known. However, this is limited to those ignition systems in which successive ignitions by oppositely directed tensioning. amplitudes are caused (magnetic ignition devices). All the candles are housed in two parallel ignition circuits that contain non-controlled valve tubes that are switched in opposite directions. A disadvantageous consequence of this is that in four-stroke engines a spark passes over at the end of the exhaust pipe at the plug, whereby it is known that this superfluous spark is not shifted into the intake period by setting the ignition to retarded.
In contrast to this known tube distributor, the subject of the invention, as already mentioned, does not depend on a specific voltage source, and the new distributor can be used for any number and arrangement of cylinders with any cycle type without having to accept unnecessary sparks. Of course, an ignition circuit can contain several candles, which are to be ignited at the same time, in any usable circuit (candle series).
In general, a valve tube will be assigned to each series of candles. Of course, it does not affect the basic idea of the invention if, instead of the one valve tube, a tube system consisting of several tubes connected in series or in parallel is used, or if the tube flow paths of several candle series are in a single tube.
A series of candles and the associated tube current path or current paths can be connected in series or in parallel with one another. In the first case, which is often preferred, the tube must be controlled in such a way that the current flows through the tube during the ignition interval, in the second case, however, the passage of current through the tube must be regulated so that the voltage outside the ignition interval on the spark plug is insufficient for ignition.
Various application examples of the invention are shown schematically in the drawing.
In all cases valve tubes are assumed to be used as distributor tubes, which have a special control electrode, e.g. B. have a so-called grid.

Contact track a is in contact, then the high-voltage current of the ignition apparatus can flow via the distributor pipe 1'1 through the candle z1, while the passage through the pipe 1'1 is blocked for the duration of the passage of the long contact track b past the sliding contact f2 .
2 'shows the use of a tube distributor in an 18-cylinder aircraft engine with a tube generator as the ignition voltage source. The position of the engine cylinders relative to one another can be seen in FIG. 2a. The spark gap in Fig. 2 also indicates the outline of the engine.
The tube generator G, which has nothing to do with the present invention, but is particularly well suited for the case shown, here contains a single high vacuum hot cathode tube H.
The generator G is controlled in such a way that it only keeps vibrations available when one of the spark plugs Si-gis of the engine is to be ignited. In the example shown, this control is effected in that the grid J of the generator tube H is connected to the grid coupling coil L or to such a potential (negative pole of the battery) by means of a circumferential sliding contact d and alternating contact tracks h1-h18 and i1-i1s arranged in a circle B) is connected, which prevents the generation of vibrations.
The alternating voltage generated by the generator G and transformed at T is fed from one end of the secondary coil of the transformer T from the interconnected electrodes of the 18 spark plugs. The other end of the secondary coil of the transformer T is connected to the hot cathode le of a high vacuum tube V. This tube V has as many anodes p and grids q as there are candle circles, in the present case 18 each. The grids q1-q16 are individually connected to a fixed sliding contact f1-f18 and these sliding contacts are as in the example of FIG arranged around a ring R which has a short contact track a and a long contact track b.
The anode pi-pis of the common distributor pipe V are connected to the counterelectiodes of the individual spark plugs in the desired sequence of ignitions.
Of course, you could just as well determine the order of the ignitions by connecting the sliding contacts f1-f18 to the grids q1-q18.
In the position shown for the various organs of the ignition devices, cylinder j! ignited. Since the sliding contact d on the tube generator G is on a contact piece (h1) connected to the grid coil L, the generator works. On the other hand, the short contact path a of the ring R is in contact with the sliding contact f1, which is connected to the grid q1 of the distributor tube V. Consequently, the working potential is on grid q1, so that the ignition current is
EMI2.2
Despite the large number of sliding contacts f, the control device (R, i, s etc.) of the manifold system can be performed relatively gracefully because only very weak currents can be controlled and the potential differences occurring here are generally only a few volts.
Previously, the distributor tube was in series with the spark gap. Fig. 3 shows a case in which the manifold and the spark gap are connected in parallel with each other. This time, a medium-frequency or high-frequency machine w is assumed to be the ignition voltage source. The transformer T has as many secondary coils as there are candle circles, in the case of one
EMI2.3
Both contact tracks a and b of the ring R, on which the brushes fi and f2 slide, this time, in contrast to the arrangements already described, the shorter (b) is connected to the shut-off potential and the longer (a) to the working potential (forward potential). As long as the forward potential at one of the tube grids, e.g.
B. gl prevails, the continuously flowing alternating current goes through the relevant tube 1'1 and not over the spark gap of the spark plug or to which the tube 1'1 is connected in parallel. However, if the short contact path b comes under the brush fi of the tube 1i, the passage of the alternating current through the tube 1'1 is blocked and the full voltage is applied to the candle Si, so that ignition can take place.
For the sake of completeness, the case of battery ignition for a six-cylinder engine is also shown in FIG. The device for interrupting the battery current is symbolized by a device U, which always delivers a current surge when the contact path a carrying the work potential with one of the sliding contacts f1-f6 connected to the grids g1-g6 of the distributor tubes r1-r6 on the manifold connected, comes into contact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Finally, it should be mentioned that with the tube distributors it is largely up to you to set the time and duration of the ignition individually for each individual cylinder, for example by adjusting the individual switching contacts f on the control device of the distributor tube system.
