The invention relates to a method for processing metal-containing material mixed with oil / fat and / or other organic chemical contaminants, in particular material arising in connection with the production and / or processing of metals, such as scale, chips, scrap, etc.
When processing steel (and other metals) at high temperatures, scale is unavoidable. Due to the need to use lubricants, especially in rolling mills, large quantities of oil-mixed scale are generated. When metal is machined, chips contaminated with oil are formed.
So far, this mixture of scale and oil has been processed on sintered belts together with ore oilers and has thus been recycled. Due to the premature evaporation of the oil components, they reach medium temperature zones below 1000 C and form dioxins and furans very easily in the predominantly oxidative atmosphere.
It is known to use oil-wetted metal supports in directly heated rotary kilns (US Pat. Nos. 3,627,289, 4,548,551) and to heat them with evaporation of the oil. Since the combustion in the rotary kiln must be carried out with a large excess of air out of consideration for complete burnout, oxidizing conditions prevail throughout the unit. The combustion temperatures of gas-air mixtures are around 1000 to 1200 C. Inevitably, therefore, the temperatures of the iron carriers are of a similar order of magnitude.
This has two disadvantages: a relatively large amount of energy has to be invested in the heating of the solid, and furthermore metallic parts of the solid are reoxidized under these conditions. The necessity of a driving style with excess air and the high flue gas temperatures mean that the gas velocities are relatively high. so that a larger discharge of fine material must also be expected. This requires a rather complex hot dedusting in order not to suffer excessive dust losses in the scrubber system. Due to the high gas and solid temperatures, it is necessary to cool both the gas and the solid. With gas, this can easily be achieved with a simple wet scrubber.
This is not so easy with solids, since wet quenching causes problems with waste water and causes reoxidation of metallic components. Dry cooling requires large amounts of air, which on the one hand can also cause reoxidation and on the other hand are also responsible for higher dust losses. Furthermore, the loss of sensible heat is not negligible.
EP-A-0 421 978 discloses a method of the type described at the outset, in which scrap is thermally pretreated for a subsequent melting process. The scrap is heated to temperatures below 450 "C under deficient conditions and the resulting gases are subjected to washing. The scrap is heated in a rotary kiln, which is heated inductively, indirectly or by introducing inert gaseous heating medium.
In order to improve the energy balance, it is known here to draw off the gas formed during the heating, to incinerate it and to use the heat released in this way for indirect heating of the rotary kiln. In this known method, however, there is no 100% deoiling of the scrap, even if the scrap remains in the heating zone for a very long time. Furthermore, the formation of condensate can lead to deposits. between either at the scrap or at the plant for carrying out the process.
By washing the gas generated when the scrap is heated, all organic chemical compounds that have higher boiling points than the washing temperature are condensed and discharged with the washing water so contaminated.
A similar process is known from US-A-4, 201, 370. Here, the gases generated in the combustion of the rotary kiln are generated. Flue gas is introduced into the rotary kiln for the direct heating of the scrap used, which is disadvantageous in that the combustion of the gases must take place under an excess of oxygen in order to be complete, whereby however oxygen gets into the rotary kiln and causes the formation of dioxins, furans and reoxidation can.
The invention aims to avoid these disadvantages and difficulties and has as its object to provide a method of the type described above and an installation for carrying out the method, which, while avoiding the formation of dioxins and furans, enable 100% deoiling or cleaning of the contaminated material . It is a special goal of the
Invention to avoid the formation of deposits in the system and reoxidation of the material.
Furthermore, the amount of energy required to carry out the method should be kept as low as possible and the discharge of dusty material should be minimized.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by combining the following features:
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The boiling temperature of the highest boiling fraction of the organic chemical contaminants, but below the melting temperature of the material, is heated, and that the gases formed thereby are discharged, whereby a condensation of the gas formed during the heating in the heating zone by admixing a non-oxidizing effect Carrier gas is prevented.
Maintaining a minimum temperature just above the boiling point of the highest-boiling fraction of the organic-chemical impurities is important insofar as it achieves a complete separation of the organic-chemical impurities. By admixing a carrier gas that does not have an oxidizing effect, it is possible to lower the partial pressure to such an extent that condensation of the gas formed during the heating is reliably avoided.
In this way, it is possible to completely remove the gas impurities that can be converted into gas from the heating zone, and deposits in the system and discharge of the organic chemical
EMI2.1
is of importance insofar as removal of oils or fats below this temperature is only incompletely possible even with very long dwell times, since oils and fats often adhere under capillary action. This applies in particular to rolling mill oils.
The gas derived from the heating zone is preferably completely combusted in a combustion zone, with condensation of the gas formed during the heating advantageously being carried out. until this gas enters the combustion zone.
A complete combustion of the gases derived from the heating zone enables their full energetic use; the flue gas is also free of unburned organic components.
The prevention of the condensation until the gas enters the combustion zone also keeps the parts of the plant which serve to guide the gas clear of deposits.
The flue gas produced during the combustion of the gas is advantageously used for the indirect supply of heat. In this way, depending on the degree of soiling, all or at least a significant proportion of the energy required for the method according to the invention can be made available.
The contaminated material is expediently heated in countercurrent heat exchange, thereby ensuring the most energy-efficient way of driving.
Preferably, the carrier gas is a reducing gas or a reducing gas mixture consisting of coke oven gas, blast furnace gas. Flue gas, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or inert gas
In order to keep the gas velocity in the heating zone as low as possible - which minimizes a loss due to the discharge of dust-like solids - in a preferred embodiment the amount of the carrier gas admixed is chosen to be such that the condensation of the contaminated material which arises when it is heated Gases in the heating zone, preferably up to the burning zone, is just prevented. In this way, it is also possible to keep the gas generated when the material is heated largely dust-free, so that the effort for any gas cleaning can be kept low.
The minimum amount of carrier gas required is advantageously determined in accordance with the vapor pressure curve of the highest boiling fraction of the impurities.
A system for carrying out the method is characterized in that a treatment chamber forming the heating zone is provided, into which the contaminated material can be charged with a charging device, a line which supplies a non-oxidizing carrier gas opening into the treatment chamber and at the opposite end thereof a gas discharge line which evolves during the heating of the contaminated material is provided, and at the end having the gas discharge line there is also a device which decharges the heated material.
The gas discharge advantageously opens into a combustion chamber containing the combustion zone.
In this case, the combustion chamber is expediently provided with a flue gas discharge line, which leads around the treatment chamber to a gas discharge, the flue gas discharge line advantageously being guided through the flow of the contaminated material through the treatment chamber while the flue gas is guided in counterflow.
As is known per se, the treatment chamber is expediently designed as a rotary tube furnace which, as is known per se, is surrounded on the outside with the flue gas discharge line.
The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of an exemplary embodiment shown in the drawing, FIG. 1 illustrating a system according to the invention in a schematic illustration.
2 shows the degree of oil removal from a material as a function of the treatment time and the treatment temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
temperature of the material again. 3 illustrates vapor pressures of selected hydrocarbons as a function of temperature.
The material 1 mixed with oil and / or fat and / or other organic chemical contaminants passes via a gas-tight charging device 2 into a treatment chamber 3, which according to the exemplary embodiment shown is designed as a rotary tube furnace. Instead of the rotary kiln, a shaking channel built into a tunnel kiln or in a sieve belt could also be provided.
The treatment chamber 3 has a double jacket 4, which serves to indirectly heat the treatment chamber 3. For the supply of a carrier gas, a gas-tightly connected carrier gas supply line 5 opens into the treatment chamber 3 at the end having the charging device 2.
At the end opposite the charging device 2, the finished material 1 is discharged via a gas-tightly connected decharging device 6. Gas produced in the treatment chamber 3 is fed to a combustion chamber 8 together with the supplied carrier gas via a gas discharge line 7, which is arranged at the end of the treatment chamber 3 at which the decharging device 6 is provided. The combustion chamber 8 has a feed line 9 for combustion air and a fuel feed line 10 for any additional fuel that may be required.
Flue gas arising in the combustion chamber 8 is introduced into the jacket space 12 of the double jacket 4 of the treatment chamber 3 via a smoke gas discharge line 11. The jacket space 12 of the double jacket 4 is provided with internals 13, so that the heat exchange between the flue gas and the material 1 can take place in the countercurrent principle, as indicated by the arrows 14. At the end of the heat exchanger section, the flue gas emerges from the double jacket 4 via an exhaust pipe 15 and is fed to a further treatment or admixture to another process gas stream (for example a sintering plant exhaust gas).
The system functions as follows:
The material 1 contaminated with oils and / or fats and / or other organic chemical contaminants is indirectly heated in the treatment chamber 3, which forms a heating zone 16, with the aid of the flue gases, and the like. between a temperature just above the boiling point of the highest boiling fraction of organic chemical contaminants. "Just above the boiling point" means a temperature in the range of 10 to 200 C above the boiling point. However, the melting temperature of material 1 must not be reached.
The gas generated during the heating by evaporation or cracking of the oils and / or fats is passed from the heating zone 16 into a combustion zone 17 in the combustion chamber 8, where the gas is completely burned.
FIG. 2 illustrates the degrees of de-oiling in the case of rolling
EMI3.1
Complete deoiling cannot be achieved even after a very long treatment period. The relevant curves only approach the 100% de-oiling level asymptotically. Since, according to the invention, the contaminated material 1 is heated to a temperature just above the boiling temperature of the highest-boiling fraction of the organic chemical contaminants, but below the melting temperature of the material 1, the material 1 leaving the treatment chamber 3 is completely cleaned of organic chemical contaminants.
The gas burned in the combustion zone 17 of the combustion chamber 8 releases its heat content as flue gas to the contaminated material 1 to be heated. If the impurities of the material 1 are not sufficient to achieve the heating of the contaminated material 1 to the required temperature, which is to be just above the boiling point of the highest-boiling fraction of the organic-chemical impurities of the material 1, external energy must be used are supplied, in which case additional fuel is introduced into the combustion zone 8 via the feed line 10.
Table 1 below shows, depending on the oil content and the treatment temperature, the energy required for heating the contaminated material 1 or the excess energy resulting from higher levels of contamination. The values with a minus sign mean that excess energy of the size of this value is achieved.

When the gas is passed on to the combustion zone 17, it is essential that no condensation of the gas formed when the contaminated material 1 is heated occurs in the plant parts until it flows into the combustion zone 17.
According to the invention, such condensation is prevented by admixing a carrier gas which has no oxidizing effect via the carrier gas feed line 5
3 shows, for example, a vapor pressure curve of a lubricating oil typically used in rolling mills. This lubricating oil has a boiling point at around 560 ° C at 1 bar. By reducing the pressure to 0.2 bar, condensation up to about 480 ° C. can be achieved. From this and from the evaporated H20 fractions and the lower-boiling fractions of the contaminated material 1, which also lower the boiling point, the minimum quantity for the carrier gas to be mixed results.
In Fig. 3 are still vapor pressure curves for lighter gear oils and heavy greases (dashed lines), such as for. Presses, etc. are used.

The required energy requirement is 1029.5 MJ, the energy yield from the oil vapors is 1262.4 MJ, which results in excess energy of 232.8 MJ. The process can thus be operated autothermally.
Condensation was reliably prevented by adding 3 standard cubic meters of carrier gas (in this case nitrogen).
