Process for applying a discontinuous layer of a thermoplastic material to a fibrous web
The invention relates to a method for applying a discontinuous layer of a thermoplastic material to a fibrous web, which can then be used as a so-called ironable stiffening material. All ironable stiffening materials that are already on the market consist of woven or non-woven fabrics which have a cover made of thermoplastic material. When it is used, such an ironable insert with the cover is placed on the item of clothing to be stiffened and then passed over with the iron. In the process, the thermoplastic material softens and thus ensures that the two layers adhere.
Inlay materials which only have such a coating in places have proven particularly useful. These products are still breathable. To produce them, powder of a thermoplastic material is uniformly sprinkled on the base in relatively small quantities (not more than 50 g / n) and then the evenly coated carrier layer is passed through a hot air chamber or under infrared radiators. As a result of the heat generated, the thermoplastic particles soften and adhere firmly to the base. The production of such ironable interlining materials is described in the German Auslegeschriften 1146028 and 1096324.
However, it is disadvantageous that the substrate to be coated is exposed to the strong effects of heat. Damage to the fiber material is already taking place, resulting in yellowing of whiter
Goods, shrinkage or stretching (change in surface area) as well as undesired tensions of the goods and when ironing or pressing the same can result in severe shrinkage (over 10/0).
It has now been found that the discontinuous coating made of a thermoplastic material can be applied to the substrate to be coated without exposing the latter to strong heat. The corresponding method is characterized in that the thermoplastic granular material is first sprinkled onto an inert belt, where it is softened by the action of heat and then the substrate to be coated is pressed at room temperature against the granular thermoplastic material lying on the belt and still soft.
An embodiment of the method is explained with reference to the drawing.
From the storage container-l-falls the thermoplastic granular powder, z. B. made of polytetrafluoroethylene, on a continuously over the rollers-2 and 3-- circulating inert belt-4-. The
The band with the applied powder then runs through a chamber (not shown) in which there are several infrared emitters-5, 6, 7-. The thermoplastic particles soften in the process.
Adjacent to and adjacent to the roller --3-- is another roller -8- over which the substrate to be coated --9-- is passed between the rollers --8 and 3--.
The base --9-- is pressed against the still soft granular thermoplastic material lying on the belt --4-. The latter remains on the base-9-, which is again removed from the tape --4--.
During the coating of the base - 9 - the latter is not exposed to the effects of radiation
