EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the selective sorption of organic vapors
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Preferred are natural clays in which montmorillonite is the major component, e.g. B. Fuller's earth or bentonite, although some alumina and silica-containing materials that are similar to montmorillonite can be used in its place.
The organic compounds used to produce the organic clay compounds are quaternary ammonium bases or salts, which the compounds form through ion exchange with the inorganic cations in the clay. A preferred organoclay compound is the dimethyldioctadecylammonium compound of the clay and this material is particularly suitable for the one according to the invention
Procedure. A preferred organo-clay compound can be produced from this material and bentonite if the proportion of the organic component in the compound is between 17 and 36% by weight, preferably between 33 and 35% by weight, of the weight of the derivative.
An organic clay compound of the type described can be produced by adding the selected organic compound to an aqueous clay suspension.
Selective Sorption Skills. which have such an organo-clay compound are particularly effective in the sorption of aromatic hydrocarbons and can expediently be used for separating aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatic hydrocarbons in the vapor phase. If, for example, aromatic hydrocarbons are to be eliminated from luminous gases, they can be separated off using this method, the aliphatic hydrocarbon being essentially unaffected. The recovery of the adsorbed aromatic hydrocarbons from the adsorbent material results in a product which is essentially free of aliphatic hydrocarbons and from which z.
For example, pure benzene can be extracted more quickly than from the product obtained by conventional methods.
The absorbed products can be recovered, for example, by selective separation from the sorption material using heat.
The method according to the invention can be used for the selective adsorption of cyclic compounds with one or more double bonds, for example aromatic, alicclic or heterocyclic
Connections are used. But it can also be used to separate isomers, e.g. B. to separate from
EMI2.1
Applications can contain simple or condensed ring systems.
All methods by which gases, vapors or mixtures thereof can be brought into contact with solids can be used for the present process. Thus, discontinuously operating sorption towers can be used for alternating adsorption and recovery of the product, and also preferably continuous operating sorption towers in which fresh sorbent is continuously supplied at one point and used sorbent is discharged at another. However, one can also use a continuous process using a sorption vessel which contains a fluidized bed of sorbent, with a continuous withdrawal of the agent and a continuous supply of gases, vapors or mixtures thereof being provided.
In the case of discontinuous sorption stations, two or more containers are provided, one or more of which are in use in the process, while the other or the other are heated in order to separate the material taken up by the sorbent.
Example 1: A mixture of 227 g of dimethyldioetadecylammonium bentonite and 1815 g of purified kieselguhr are introduced into a column 900 mm long and 25 mm in diameter; then nitrogen, which contained 1.8 g benzene each 0.028 mJ, was brought to flow through the column at a rate of 0.028 μl per 40 min at 200 ° C. The column completely removed the benzene from 0.133 m3 of the mixture.
Example 2: With the same column and under the same conditions as in Example 1, nitrogen with O. 75 g of toluene each 0.028 mS was sent through the column, the toluene being completely removed from the 0.311 m3 mixture.
Example 3: Using the same column and under conditions as in Example 1, nitrogen containing 1.8 g of both benzene and cyclohexane was passed through the column and 0.133 m3 of gas was obtained, which was only 1.45 g each 0.028 ms cyclohexane contained.
Example 4: 227 g of dimethyldioctadecylammonium bentonite were brought into contact with a large excess of nitrogen with 10 g of benzene per 0.028 m at 200 ° C. until equilibrium was reached. It was then found that the organoclay compound had adsorbed 33 g of benzene.
Example 5: Purified luminous gas from a vertical retort yielded, after washing with oil in a normal benzene plant, a benzene which contained aromatic hydrocarbons. The remaining 251a consisted of aliphatic hydrocarbons, cycloparaffins and small amounts of other substances

fe, e.g. B. heterocyclic compounds.
A sample of this benzene was coated with an inert carrier
Gas (nitrogen) was re-evaporated to give a mixture containing approximately 10% v / v benzene vapor. The gas mixture was sent at a speed of 1. 132 mS per hour through a column 2700 mm long and 75 mm in diameter, which was filled with granular dimethyl dioctadecylammonium bentonite containing 33.4% organic material.
As soon as the column was saturated, which was shown by the escape of aromatic substances from the column, the gas flow was stopped. The absorbed material was stopped by heating the column from the outside to 80 ° C. and passing through a flow of inert gas with a Speed of 0.141 mS / h deposited through the column. The escaping hydrocarbons were condensed by freezing out of the inert carrier gas flow. When analyzed, the product showed a content of 93% by weight of aromatic hydrocarbons.
Example 6: The procedure of the previous example was repeated using a mixture of equal parts by weight of meta- and para-xylene (instead of benzene) in a stream of inert gas. The product obtained contained 42 gel% p-xylene and 58% by weight m-xylene and in this way showed the ability to selectively sorb the dimethyldioctadecylammonium bentonite.
