Device to prevent overheating of electric irons.
Devices for preventing overheating of electric irons are known, which consist in that part of the handle of the iron is designed as a power switch which is held in the switching position by the hand guiding the iron during ironing. There are also known electric irons which interact with a base or a grate and keep a switch arranged in this base closed by their weight, so that the heating resistor is traversed by the current when the iron is at rest. It is also known to make use of the dilation of metals in electric irons and to use fuses through which the electric current flows and which permanently interrupt the circuit in the event of overheating.
Some of the known embodiments also have the disadvantage that the heating current switch moves very slowly, so that long-lasting sparking occurs, especially when the circuit is opened, which prematurely destroys the switch and creates a fire hazard.
The object of the invention relates to a device for preventing overheating of electric irons, in which a switch housed in the handle is held in the final position when ironing by hand or when placing the iron on the base by a weight-loaded lever connected to the stop for the iron is and consists in the fact that the release lever loaded by the iron weight is supported by a pivot lever operated by expansion bodies, which slides onto the weight-loaded release lever as the temperature rises and suddenly releases the same when the desired maximum temperature is reached.
The subject matter of the invention is shown schematically in an exemplary embodiment in the drawing. Fig. 1 shows an elevation in partial section, Fig. 2 shows a bottom view.
The device is enclosed by a housing b which rests on feet a made of heat-insulating material and carries a heating plate c at the top, which serves as a support for the iron d and as a heat conductor. Below the plate c sliding expansion rods f are arranged in guides e, which are in contact with the plate c and of which one end rests against an adjustable abutment g, while its other end and the ends of the other expansion rods f Double levers h rest, which are rotatable about pin i.
One end of the last expansion rod f acts on one arm j of a double lever, the other arm k of which is under the action of a spring l and interacts by means of a stop n designed as an adjusting screw m with a release lever p, q that can swing around a pin o. A bracket r prevents the arm k from sagging. The arm p of the release lever is held down by the stop n; the arm q of the release lever acts on a rod s, which is guided displaceably in a guide t arranged on the housing b and is under the action of a spring u. The rod s is mechanically connected to the arm of the heating current holder housed in the handle of the iron (not shown in the drawing).
The device works as follows: The support e carrying the iron transfers the heat to the expansion rods f. The first of these, which expand in the direction of the arrows shown in the drawing and ultimately cause the arm k to pivot against the action of the spring 1. As soon as this pivoting reaches an extent that can be changed by the adjusting screw m, the stop n slides off the arm p of the release lever and releases the release lever.
A spring acting on the heating current switch housed in the handle of the iron causes the switch to suddenly open and the rod to slide downwards.

and brings the release lever p, q back to its starting position, in which it is fixed by the stop n after the expansion rods have cooled down and with the assistance of the spring 1.
The distance to be covered by it for the purpose of releasing the release lever and thus the temperature at which the heating current is interrupted depends on the setting of the stop n.
