WILLIAEI J. ONEILL, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
nun-our;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, I916).
Application filed April 19, 1909. Serial No. 490,925.
To all whom it may camera.
Be it'known that I, WILLIAM J. ONEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye-Cups, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of an eye cup designed to be used for introducing liquids into the eye for medicinal purposes and the like.
Further objects of the invention are to produce a device of this kind which may easily be kept in a clean and sanitary condition; one in which the cup may be disengaged from the bulb; one having the bulb so constructed that it projects inside of the cup and forms a cork to be used-as a stopper for the vial containing the liquid to be used, thus servinga double purpose of always having the via closed, and with the cup maintained in an inverted position when not in use, which for sanitary reasons is desirable.
Other objects and advantages of my improved device Will be hereinafter explained and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention, 30
which I now consider the preferred form of my construction, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of my eye cup applied to the eye of a person; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the samel; Fig. 3 1s a bottom plan view; and Fig. 4 illustrates the cup in inverted position with the cork in the mouth of a bottle.
In carrying out my invention A represents the eye cup, which. is preferably although not necessarily oval in" outline, having a rim (1 around the lower edge thereof and a contracted neck portion a. The cup is preferably constructed of aluminum, or other light non-flexible, non-absorbent material. 13 is a compressible bulb, provided at one end thereof with a neck'b, having a conduit 6' extending longitudlnally therethrough. The neck 5 in roximity to its inner terminus is provided with a peripheral shoulder b and a circumferential shoulder b surrounds this neck a proximately mediate of the length thereo Theneck portion a of the cup fits over the neck neck a of thecup inside thereof and may be used as a cork for the bottle C, the shoulder b resting against the rim on the neck of the bottle as shown in Fig. 3.
"When it is desired to be used the device fitting into the neck of a bottle as shown in Fig. 3, by compressing the bulb B the liquid will be drawn through the conduit Z2 into the bulb, and by lacing the rim of the cup around the eye C as shown in Fig. 1 and compressing the bulb apartial vacuum is created in the cup which holds the cup securely in position with the eye lid opened, and discharges the liquid into the eye. By
suction the cup will be held in this position until the liquid is applied asdesired and the cup removed.
I claim An eye-cup comprising a cup member formed of rigid material and consisting of an enlarged body portion having a beaded free end, and a contracted neck portion, and
a compressible memberterni'inating at one end in a rigid neck provided with a peripheral'shoulder in proximity to its inner end,
said shoulder constituting-an abutment and said rigid neck furthermore provided with a peripheral shoulder intermediate its ends constituting a support,-'said rigid neck extending through the neck portion of the cup member and frictionally engagin said neck portion, whereby the compressible member and cup member are detachablyconnected together, said neck portion engaging said abutment, said rigid neck extending partially through said body portion and pro- .vided with a relatively small passage communicating at one end with the interior of the compressible member and at its other end opening into the body portion of the cup member.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J. ONEILL.
