SALT-CELLAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. BoUvE'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Salt- Cellars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles adapted for the reception of condiments such salt, pepper and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of this character with a perforated cap or closure having an agitator blade adapted to be extended within the receptacle and provided with a suitable handle projecting outside of the cover whereby the agitator may be rotated within the receptacle to stir the con diment and thoroughly agitate the same so as to allow a free passage of the condiment through the perforated top or closure.
With the above, and other objects in View which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a salt cellar constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section illustrating a slightly modified form of the de vice. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section upon the line of Fig. 8.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the collar or receptacle. This receptacle 1 may be .constructed of any desired. material and has its upper open mouth provided with areduced threaded portion 2. The lower portion or floor of the cellar may be, as illustrated in Fig. 3, provided with a central depression or agitator seat, designated by the numeral 3.
The numeral l designates the top or cap of the cellar. This cap 4 is provided with the usual perforated condiment outlets 5, and is also provided with a depending flange 6 having interior threads adapted to engage with the threads 2 of the receptacle 1. The cap 4 is also provided with a central opening 7 which is adapted for the reception of the handle member 8 connecting an agitator member 9. The agitator 9, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing, comprises a flattened body portion having its ends rounded Specification of Letters latent.

in opposite directions, as designated by the opening is adapted for the reception of the wire composing the handle 8. The handle 8 may be constructed of asingle strand of wire, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, or may be constructed of several strands of wire twisted upon themselves, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing and as both are of a. substantially similar formation the reference numerals and method of connection with the agitators are precisely similar. The strand wire comprising the handle and the agitator support is first passed through the opening provided by the agitator 9, and is from thence brought upwardly upon both sides of the agitator and passed through the central orifice 7 of the cap 4:. The strands of wire are then bent in opposite directions, in a substantially horizontal plane and from thence are bent upwardly toward each other and twisted together in a line with the plane of the members secured upon each side of the agitator 9, and these strands may be bent away from each other and downwardly terminating approximately in line with the horizontal offset members adjacent the cap 4. A suitable washer 12 is provided between the horizontal offset portions of the wire and the top of the cap so as to allow for the free rotation of the handle and the agitator within the receptacle. While I have illustrated and described the handle 8 constructed as above, it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to this exact formation as other designs may be used with equal etficiency.
In Fig. 3 it will be noted that the agitator .9 extends nearly to the bottom of the receptacle l and is provided with a central depending bearing 13 adapted to be positioned within the recess 3 of the receptacle.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that I have provided an eX- tremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, one wherein the condiment within the receptacle may be readily agitated and stirred so as to thoroughly loosen the grains of the condiment and allow an easy and free passage through the openings 5 of the cap 4t, one which may be constructed at a small cost and one which may be readily and easily applied to the caps of similar receptacles now in general use.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a condiment receptacle, a perforated cap for the receptacle, of an agitator comprising a flattened body portion and having its ends adjacent the wall of the receptacle bent in opposite directions, said agitator being provided with a central orifice, a Wire member engaging the orifice and projecting upon each side of the body of the agitator through the perforated cap and having its ends bent to form a handle, substantially as described.
2. A condiment receptacle having its bottom provided with a centrally arranged depression, a perforated cap for the receptacle,
teased an agitator member extending between the perforated cap and the bottom of the receptacle, said agitator having a flattened body portion and having its lower end provided With a bearing adapted to engage the recess in the bottom of the receptacle, said agitator having its body portion provided with an opening, a Wire member engaging the opening and extending upon both sides of the agitator through one of the perforations of the ca 3, and said projecting portions being bent to torm a handle, substantially as described.
