may concern. i
.Be it known that I, HARRY hZlARSH, a citi- Z en of the. United States, residing at Jamestown, in thecounty of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tip- Holders for Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification.
hereinafter described wit accompanying 'this specification, in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throu bout the severalfigures thereof, and in whic Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy im roved device showing the same secured tot e end portion ofa billiard cue, Fig. 2 is a central ongitudinal sectional view taken therethrough, Fig. 3 isa transverse sectional view taken therethrough on the line 3.-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar view'taken therethrough on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping sleeve de-q I 'tached.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, and with particularreferenoe to the accompanying drawing 1- provide a billiard cue A w1th .a reduced and on which reduced end B I mount a clamping sleeve 1 extending outwardly from said'cue A and s own particularly in Fig.- 5.v Within the clamping sleeve 1 1' preferably arrange a cylindrical tube 2 having its closed end-3 abutting. the
endof the reduced portion B of the cueA and attached thereto Joy a screw or the like 4. The clamping sleeve 1 is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed openings 5 out therethrough at an-approximately central point and is ,further pro vided with longitudinal slots ti'extending from its outer end for a dis tance towards said 0 enings 5, and forming therebetween a plura ity of spring tongues 7 having beveled ends 8. The clam ing sleeve 1 is'further provided with a th'fa ed portion ,between the inner ends and the slots 6 and the 0 enin'gs 5 upon which the internally threa' edend of an operating sleeve 9 1s a the clamping mvention relates to devices for scour-- adapted to ertglgage, said operating sleeve 9 bemg provide vwith a contracted outer edge 10 adapted" tol'en'gage upon the beveledends 8 of the spring tongues 7 to force the same into engagement with an elongated leatheone tip 0 to holdthe same firmly in position. The end of the cylindrical tube 2 within sleeve 1 extends to a point Within said sleeve at one side of the opening 5 while at the opposite side of said opening 5 preferably arrange a circular internal fla e 11, between whichand the end of the tube 2 I arrange a rotatable nut 12 having a rough- 'ened circumferential face. The nut 12 is provided with a central internallythreaded bore through which a threaded stem-13 projects from a circular plate 14 having out- Wardly extending lugs 15 arra ed toslide within oppgsite ones 'jof the ongitudinal slots 6 wit 'n the clamping sleeve 1. The circular (plate 14 abuts the inner end of the one tip and, being held from rotation by means of. its lugs 15 engaging within the slots 6, rotation of the nut 12 causes a longii tudinaldisplacem'ent of the threaded stein 13 and its plate 14 and the cue tip C, forcing said tip outwardly or moving inwardly de- I pendent upon the direction'of such rotation, the nut 12 being held from sidewise movement between the end of the cylindrical tube 2 and the circular internal flange 11 of the clamping sleeve 1.
It. will beunderstood that in assembling the device the nut 12 is inserted in position within the clamping sleeve 1 before said sleeve is forced over the cylindrical tube 2 and the contracted end of thecue A. It-will further be understood that when lon 'tudinal movement of the one tip 0 is desire the operating sleeve 9' is first slightly unscrewed rom the clamping sleeve 1 allowin the spring tongue 7 thereof to withdraw sllghtly from tight engagement with said one tip, said operating sleeve 9 being provided with ,roughened bands 16 extending therearound for more conveniently manlpulating the- Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim: 1. In a cue tip holder of the character described, the combination of a clampin sleeve adapted to fit the end of a cue and havin theret irough and a plurality of s ring tongues extending from the outer end t ereof, said spring tongues being adapted to hold.
centrally disposedalined openings a cue tip slidably therein, an operating sleeve for engagement upon said clamping sleeve andprov1ded with a contracted end to force said springv tongtpes into engagement with said tip, a rotata le nut mounted within said clamping sleeve opposite said alined open ings, and provided with a threaded bore, means to prevent sidewise movement of said nut therein, said means assisting in securing said clamping sleeveto the end-of the cue, a
threaded stem extending through said threaded bore in said nut and carrying a plate upon its outer end, said plate abuttin the rear end of said one tip and having latera ly extending lugs projecting between pairs of said spring tongues to revent rotation of said plate and said threa ed stem, whereby longitudinal movement will be imparted to the same upon the rotation of said nut, substantially as de scribed.
2. In a cue ti holder of the character described, the com ination with a one having a steam hold a cue ti slidably therein, an 0 relating sleeve threa ed to screw upon said ing sleeve and provided with a contracted end to force said spring ton ues into engagement with said tip, a rotata le nut mounted within said clamping sleeve 0 osite said alined openings and provided wlt a thrcaded bore, means to prevent sidewise moveing between pairs of said spring tongues to prevent rotation of said plate and said threaded stern, whereby longitudinal move-- rnent will be im arted to the same upon the rotation of said nut, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
