Description

'atten' taten ste-at @fitte Letters .Patent No. 79,158, lated June 28, 1868,
IMPROVED PLATFORM POB. ROCKDRILLS.
@its tlgehlrle return tu it that 'tnters patent ma mating part tt tlge tana.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.-
Be it'known., that we, PETER, SWEENEY and JOHN BRAD'BURN, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Platform for Rock-Drills, &c; and we do hereby declare the following `to'be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of thi's specication, in which drawing? Figure 1 represents a longitudinalvertical section of this invention. Figure 2 is a transverse section thereof. Similar letters indicate correspondingI parts. v VThis invention relates to a platform for supporting rock-drills and other machines, particularly Awhen such machines are used in submarine'operations. Said platform is provided with a series of adjustable legs, whereby said platform can be adjusted in a level position on uneven or ruggedground, and with said adjustable legs is combinedan adjustable chainwthat serves to brace the legs, and prevents them from, spreading, ifv they are placed on a steep rock. i p
In thc platform are Secured' one or. more tubular guides, which are adjustable in such a manner that their bottom ends can be brought? clear down to the surface to be acted uponand that the drill or other mechanism can be made to act with precision on thc desired spot.
A represents a' platform, which is made of wood, or lany other suitable material, and which ought to be:
made so that itis not liable to be carried away by the 4current of water, if the platform is seddn' a submarine operation.
Said platfornzuisl provided with a series of legs, B B', which' are adjustable by means of screwthreads a, so thatA they can be accommodated t'o the uueven'or rugged surface' of the ground on which they bea-r. The legs B are placed in oblique position, while the legs B pass down through the platform in a vertical direction, and in order to prevent the legs from spreading, if they bear on a steep incline, a chain, I, is applied, which forms a brace between said legs, as shown in g. 2 of the drawing. This chain is provided with rings, c, which catch over the legs, landvy'hich can be raised or lowered by chains o'r ropes d, so' that the chain b can be adjusted in' the most advantageous position.
. By means ofthe adjustable legs B B the platform A can/be raised or lowered, and when it is to be used." VA
in submarine operations it be adjusted at4 the desired height above the water-line, and-a dry support is ebtainefl forthe drilling-machine, or other mechanism, and for the persons working the same.
In'the platform A are seo'ured one or more tubularJguides, O, which are adjustable by screw-threads e, or by any; other suitable means, so that their bottom ends can be brought to bear on thc\surface`to be acted on by the drill or other mechanism. Through these guides extend the drill-rods, so that the drills will always strike the rock in the required spot.
vIi`-a holo is to be drilled in a rock submerged in w'ater at a depth of thirty or more feet, and particu- .larly if the operation, is to -be carried on in a strong current, such guides are indispensable, in order to bring the drillrto :ict on the required spot.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, js- In a drill-stand, rendered adjustable by means substantially asv shown, thc adjustable guides O C, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
PETER SWEENEY, JOHN BRADBURN.
