Be it known that I, RICHARD E. PEDIGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lucas, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Out-Out for Rural Telephones, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to prevent the annoyances, dangers, accidents, and damages incident to strokes of lightning following telephone linewires to an instrument and an operator at the instrument.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of an automatic lightning-arrester and cut-out with the outside of a building and a telephone inside of the building, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a section of the wall of a building and my invention applied to the wall as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a top view of the base upon which vthe operative devices are mounted and combined. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the base, the binding-posts, comb protector-plates, a lever, and means for operating the lever from the inside of a building.

The numeral 10 designates a base made of porcelain. It is preferably circular and has a iiange 12 at its circumference. An oblong ybrass plate 13 is iixed on top of the base and triangular-shaped brass comb-plates 14 and 15 on top of the base contiguous to the parallel edges of the plate 13 by means of screws, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A binding-post 16, adapted to serve as a bearer for a lever 17, fulcrumed to its top, is fixed on top of the plate 13 and to the base 10 by means of a screw b, as shown in Fig. 3. A binding-post 18 is fixed on top of the plate 14 and the base 10 by a screw Z, and a corresponding bindingpost 19 is fixed on the plate 15 and the base 10 by a screw Z2. The posts 18 and 19 are provided with contact-clips to cooperate with the switch-blade. A line-wire conductor 2O is fixed to the post 19 and a ground-wire 21 to the post 18. A telephone 22 is attached to the inside of the wall, as shown in Fig. 1,

and a wire 23 connected with the central binding-post 16 and a binding-post 24 on the telephone, and a wire 25 is connected with the binding-post 18 and a binding-post 26 on the telephone. A porcelain tube 27 is fixed in the wall and a stem 28 extended through it and pivotally connected with the end of the long arm of the lever 17 and provided with a rubber button 29 on its free end for manually operating the lever as required to cut out the telephone from communication with the line-wire 2O whenever desired by simply pressing the button 29 to place the short arm of the lever 17 in contact with the bindingpost 18. p

The base 10 is fixed to the outside of the wall of a building by means of screws c, extended through apertures or in any suitable way. g

Having thus set forth the purpose of my invention and the construction, arrangement,

combination, and function of each part, the practical operation and utility thereof will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is

1. In a lightning-arrester'and cut-out for telephones, a porcelain base having a flange at its circumference, a brass plate fixed on its top and center, a binding-post fixed on top of said plate and a lever fulcrumed to the top of the post, comb-plates fixed on the top of the.

2. A lightning-arrester and cut-out for telephones comprising a porcelain base having a ange at its circumference, a brass plate fixed on its top and center, a binding-post fixed on top of said plate and a lever fulcrumed to the top of the post, comb-plates fixed on the top of the base on the opposite sides of said fixed brass plate and binding-posts provided with contact-clips fixed on top of said comb-plates,
