SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I757,089, dated April 12, 1904.

To all whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, HENRY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drovers Whips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a novel construction in a drovers whip, the object being to provide simple and eiiicient means for fastening the lash to the stock so as to hold the inner end portion of the lash against tipping and likewise to prevent the same from being torn and mutilated at the stock end by extending a part of the stock into said lash; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a fragmentary central longitudinal section of a whip constructed in accordance with my invention, taken on the line l 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a similar section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the upper end of the stock. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section showing a slightly-modified form of construction.

In the construction of drovers whips in which long heavy lashes are used it is essential that the inner end of the lash should be so secured to the stock as to permit of no relative pivotal motion between the end of the stock and said inner end of the lash, this being most essential to the proper manipulation of such whip. It is equally essential to avoid the use of any devices which in accomplishing the above result will decrease the durability ofthe whip and cause the lash to wear out or break adjacent the stock. To provide such desired rigid connection between the stock and the lash, I construct the lash A in the usual manner, the core B thereof consisting of a flexible conical leather bag filled with shot and around which the leather casing C is braided. The said bag B and casing C each terminate at their lower ends in long and comparatively wide straps or thongs D and E, which are passed through an opening F in the upper end of the stock Gr in opposite directions, the free ends of said thongs being laid against opposite sides of said shot bag or core B, the said strap or thong D being secured by means of the cord D, wound around the `parallel with the axis of said opening F, and

the bottom of said recess is preferably made slightly convex longitudinally, so as to enable the cord securing said thong D to be wound so as to cause said thong to lie in close contact with the upper wall of said opening F and bottom of said recess H and be drawn very taut to prevent relative movement between the same and the part of the stock Cr engaged thereby. The said thong E, the other end of which terminates in the strips to be braided to form said casing C, is also drawn very taut and very closely braided to prevent any travel longitudinally through said opening F and said recess H. The projections J on each side of the recess H form shoulders which will obviously prevent the lash from tipping relatively to said stock in another direction, so that said lash is thus held absolutely rigid with the end of the stock, and to further insure this I provide a stilf tautly-braided reinforcing-sleeve K around the lower end of said lash immediately above said stock.

The above-described construction may be modified as illustrated in Fig. 4, in which the stock Gr is annularly reduced below the opening F to form an annular shoulder L. The casing C instead of terminating in astrap or thong passing through said opening Fis of suflicient Width at its lower end to surround the said stock above and below said shoulder L and is secured by a cord M, wound tightly over same. ,In all other respects this construction coincides with that shown in Figs. l and 2. This construction is very advantageous, for the reason that no part of the stock extends into the lash, which usually causes the latter to be worn through near its lower end by the wear to which it is subjected by the projecting position of' said stock.

My device is also easier and cheaper to manufacture than the drovers whips now in general use.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a whip, the combination with a lash, of a stool; provided, at its free end` with a transverse groove and also with a transverse opening parallel with and adjacent said groove, thongs on the inner end of said lash adapted to be passed through said opening and securely bound into said groove, whereby pivotal motion of said lash relatively to said stock is prevented.

2. In a whip, the combination with a lash and thongs on the inner end of said lash, a stock provided at its free end with projections adapted to receive said thongs between the same and hold the latter against pivotal motion relatively to said stock in one direction, said stock being also provided with a transverse opening adjacent said projections adapted to receive said thongs for fasteningv said lash to said stock and hold said lash against relative pivotal motion in another direction.

In a drovers whip the combination with a stock provided in its end with a transverse concave groove and provided below said groove with a transverse opening axially parallel with said groove, of a lash comprising a filling member having a thong at one end passing through said opening and lying partially within said groove for holding the end of said member firmly within the latter, and a braided casing terminating in a strap passing through said opening and lying partially in said groove for holding the end of said casing firmly within the same, said filling member and said casing being thus held against pivotal motion relatively to said stock.

4:. In a drovers whip, the combination with a stock provided in its end with a transverse concave groove and provided below said groove with a transverse opening axially parallel with said groove, of a lash comprising a filling member having' a thong at one end passing through said opening and lying partially within said groove for holding the end of said member firmly within the latter, and a braided casing terminating in a strap passing through said opening and lying partially in said groove for holding the end of said casing firmly within the same, and a reinforcing-sleeve on said casing extending partially within said groove.

5. In a drovers whip, the combination with the stock provided adjacent its free end with a transverse opening and provided in its free end with a concave groove axially parallel with said opening, of a shot-bag and thongs, attached to the base of said shot-bag, adapted to lie within said groove and be secured therein by means of acord or thong passing through said opening, said bag being thus held against pivotal motion relatively to said stock, and a braided casing or covering surrounding said shot bag and lying partially within said groove, said casing or covering being secured to said stock below said groove.

6. In a drovers whip, the combination with the stock, provided adjacent its free end with a transverse opening and provided in its free end with a concave groove axially parallel with said opening, of a shot-bag and thongs attached to the base of said shot-bag adapted to lie within said groove and be secured therein by means of a cord or thong passing through said opening, said bag being thus held against pivotal motion relatively to said stock, and a braided casing or covering surrounding said shot bag and lying partially within said groove, said casing or covering being secured to said stock below said groove, and a reinforcing-sleeve mounted on said casing and lying partially within said groove for further preventing relative pivotal motion between said lash and said stock.
