IMPROVEMENT IN URINALS.

Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 53,@88, dated March 27, 1866.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ANDREW RANxi-N, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Urinals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.

The object ot' the present invention is to so construct a urinal-bowl,77 so called, as to adapt it for the reception and retention of a deodorizer of the obnoxious and unpleasant odors emitted bythe urine discharged by persons into the same, while at the same time the free escape of the urine from the bowl into the waste-pipe is not in theleast degreeinteriered with, as will be apparent from the following detail description thereot, reference being had to the accompanying plate ot' drawings, ot' which- Figure l is a plan or top view of the urinalbowl constructed according to my improvement; Fig. '2, a central vertical section taken in the plane ofthe line or, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of a portion ot' the urinal, showing a modification in the construction ot' the same in order to adapt it for use,.in connection with my improvement for urinals where one bowl is used, but which is partitioned ott'.

so that more than one person can be using it at one and the same time 'and yet not be exposed to each other, urinals havingsuch a construction or so partitioned being frequently employed in railroad-depots, ferry-houses, and other places of public resort.

A in the drawings represents a cylindrical or other suitable-shaped vessel or bowl, made of metal or any other ofthe materials ordinarily used for urinal purposes, which vessel is open at its upper end and is to stand in a vertical position, or nearly so, when set.

B is the waste-pipe for the escape of thc urine discharged into the bowl A, placed in the center of the bottom piece, O, of the bowl and extending upward therefrom for a short distance, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Around the projecting portion of the pipe within the urinal-bowl, any suitable deodorizing agent or compound is placed, as represented by red lines in the drawings, to a height equal, or nearly so, to that of the pipe, the deodorizing agent which I prefer to use being that described in the specification accompanying an application for Letters Patent made by me bearing even date herewith for a deodorizing compound. By thus extending the waste-pipe above the bott-om of the urinal-bowl a reservoir or space is left about the same suitable for the reception ot' a dcodorizing agent, while at the same time the free escape of the urine through the waste-pipe is allowed, it overflowing into the same, as is obvious without furtherexplanation, my deodorizing composition hereinabove referred to being of a much heavier speciiic gravity than the urine and consequently remaining in the bowl, the deodorizing agent completely relieving all the smell and odorA emitted from the urine,the advantage ot' which is manifest.

As before stated in Fig. 3, the'adaptation ot my improvement to a partitioned urinal-bowl is shown, it consisting in lieu of having the urine over tlow the top of the waste-pipe, in perforating the upper portion of the same through which pertorations the urine passes, said perforations being at a sufficient distance from the bottom ofthe bowl to form the requisite reservoir or receptacle for the deodorizin g agent. Periorations can also be made in the waste-pipe ot the bowl, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as well as that shown in Fig. 3,) but I do not deem it necessary or even desirable in such cases; but I do not, however, wish to limit myself to any particular' form or shape of the urinal bowl 0r trough or outlets for the urine from the bowl, as they can be indetnitely varied, the present invention simply consisting in so constructing a urinal bowl or trough that while the free escape of the urine therefrom is allowed, a deodorizing agent can be placed and retained therein for the purpose-of removing the obnoxious odors emitted from the urine.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A urinal in which a deodorizing agent is applied around an eduction tube, arranged in relation to the vessel as herein shown and described.
