Description

(No Model.)
S. E. CLARK.
TOY RIDING STICK. No. 385,910. Patented July 10, 1888.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES SAMUEL E. CLARK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY RIDING STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,910, dated July 10, 1888. Application filed March 12, 1888. Serial No. 266,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Riding-Sticks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in toy ridingsticks, and the object is to produce a toy which will be simple and cheap.
The invention consists of a toy riding-stick comprising a hollow body, a head having a movablejaw adapted to open and close, presenting a life-like appearance, a bell or gong adapted to be struck by said jaw, and devices for operating said jaw, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of a toy riding-stick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a head of a horse or other animal havingapivoted or movable jaw, B. The head is secured at one end to a body, tube, or hollow stick, 0, to the lower end whereof is attached the hearing D for a cranked axle, E, with which the wheels F are connected. A piece of wire, a rod, or other connecting device,O. is mounted on the crank portion of the axle E, passed through the body 0, and connected with the inner end of the movablejaw B. Within the head or upper stationaryjaw of the head is secured a hell or gong, G, and to the movable jaw B is attached the hammer of the said bell or gong.
The operation of the toy will be readily understood. The body is straddled and the toy moved along, whereby the wheels rotate, and by reason of the connection of the cranked axle with the pivoted jaw the said jaw opens and closes and strikes the bell; or, if desired, a cap may be exploded, thus producing an amusing riding device.
I am aware that it is old to provide a toy stick-horse with pivoted legs, which are connected by a rod with a crank-axle,so that said legs receive motion when the axle revolves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy consisting of a hollow ridingstick having connected therewith the representation of the head of an animal, and provided with a pivoted lower jaw, a crank-axle with wheels thereon, arms connecting said hollow stick with said axle, and a rod within said hollow stick connecting the crank portion of said axle with the inner end of said lower jaw, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A toy consisting of a hollow riding-stick having connected therewith the representation of the head of an animal, and provided with a pivoted lower jaw, a crank-axle with wheels thereon, arms connecting said hollow stick with said axle, a rod within said hollow stick connecting the crank portion of said axle with the inner end of said lowerjaw,a gong secured to the fixed portion of said jaw, and a hammer or striker secured to the pivoted j aw,said parts being combined substantially as described.
. S. E. CLARK.
