Description

A. PAWLING.
TOOL HOLDER.
(No Model.)
,016. Patented June 2, 1885.
PM Vaughn LB x Arnirfr ALONZO PAVVLING, OF MILYVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TOOL=HOLDER.
SECIFIATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 319,016, dated June 2, 1885,
Application filed November 24, 1884. (No model.)
To coZZ whom it min/y concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO PAwLINe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mil- WZLlllCQB, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turning-Tool Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form apart of this specification.
Myinvention, to be hereinafter claimed, relates to improvements in nietal-turning-tool holders. The object of my invention is to provide asimple,easily-adjusted,and unyielding holder for the cutting-tool.
To aid me in my description and for a more ready and full understanding of my invention, reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stock, tool, and eo-working parts of my invention. Fig. 2 is the key, and Fig. 3 is a front end view of the holder.
A is the stock, provided near its front end with an aperture at an angle to its long axis, and also preferably at a slight angle to its per pendicular axis, (as shown in Fig. 8,) for the reception of the cutting-tool B. The cutting tool B has across its long axis,on its side that is to the rear when adjusted in the holder, a series of recesses or notches, e. The stock A has an intercepting aperture extending from the aperture adapted for the reception of the cutting-tool B to the rear end of the stock, which aperture is adapted for the reception of the hey G and bolt D, and has cut in its rear part a female screw-thread adapted for the reception of the screw cuton the bolt D, and said bolt has a square head, d, or other equivalent means of turning it. The key 0 has a slight forward and backward movement in the aperture in the stock nearly at right angles with the axis of the tool, and is preferably provided with a short recess or slot, Z), into which is inserted through the side of the stock the retaining pin or screw a, adapted to hold the key in position,but permitting the movement described. The front end of theheyG is beveled or otherwise made to fit into the recesses in the back of the cutting-tool B, and this key is of such length as to extend from the cuttingtool to and against the front end of the bolt D. It will be seen that, the parts of this device being in position. by tightening the bolt D the key (1 will be forced firmly into a recess on the tool B, thereby holding the tool rigidly in the stock against the force applied at its outer front end, and by unscrewing the bolt D and turning the stock upright the key 0 will by its gravity drop away from and release the tool 15, whereby it can be removed or readjusted.
YV-hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The turning-tool holder consisting of the stock A, having an aperture crosswise near its front end for the cutting-tool and an intercepting aperture lengthwise for ahey and adjustingbolnsliding key (3, having its front end adapted to fit into recesses on the rear of the cutting-tool, and adjustingbolt- D, provided with a screw-thread working in a corresponding thread in the longitudinal aperture in the stock, and having a square head or equivalent means of turning said bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. The stock A, provided with sliding key 0 and adjusting-bolt D, in combination with cutting-tool B, having recesses c on its rear, and adapted to receive the front end of the key, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALOETZO PAW LING.
