A. L. PITNEY.
ROPE UR LINE CLASP.
Patented Apr. 22, 1884.
Y rrrrnn .Sintes ALBERT L. PITNEY, or WASHINGTON, DIsTnIoT or ce'LUMBIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part pf Letters Patent No. 297,158, dated April 22, 1884.
' i Application filed March-25, 1884. (Fo model.)
To @ZZ when@ it Indy concern.: y
Be it known that I, ALBERT L.- PITNEY, of "Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a certain Improvement in Rope or Line Glasps, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which like letters refer to like parts in the device and its modifications.
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view ot'my improved clasp with the rope in position as in actual use. Fig. 2 1s a view of the cover or top part of the case.` Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the whole case with clamping device in position.
Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of lthe clamping device. Fig. 6 is a view of one modification of the different parts of the device, showing how they may be changed without destroying the identity of the whole.
. My present invention hasfor its object to provide a simple and reliable device for fastening cords, dre., and to obviate the necessity of tying and nntying the cord and the labor incident thereto. f
My invention 4consists l:in a case through which the line is passed, and aclalnping device that is, by the strain nponthe rope, made to press the same tightly against the sides of the case. rlhis improved clasp may be con- S'ructed in various forms, and its parts arranged in a variety of ways without involving any difference in principle. Some of the different forms which havesuggestedthelnselves to ine have, however, their own special advantages, and in Fig. l I have shown the construction I` p refer.
In order that others skilled manufacture may fully understand my. in-
" struction preferred, and regard the same as .typical of all, reference being had to the acvention, I will particularly describe the con purpose of obtaining themost desirable lines for running the grooves for 4the rope or cord and for convenience in handling. It may be lrrrnrvjr @streng .sont ORLINE CLASP.
in the art or desired sometimes to have the clasp permanently attached to the bag or where used, so that the cord can be drawn through instead of having the clasp pushed along the cord, and to facilitate this end a lug or lugs with openings for riveting or tying may be stamped out or cast upon the case during the manufacture.
C, D, and E represent a clamping device, that may be made in one or two parts,as seems best adapt-ed for the particular occasion, and that also may be ofany desirable shape or thickness of metal. The clamping device has an opening in its forward part or extension, that is intended for the purpose of allowing the cords to be passed through in a crossed posi tion, in order to form a bight for the rope, so that it will pressagainst the end of the extension D, and hereby, in drawing the cord toward the. fore part of the case, to cause the clamping device to move forward and securely bind the rope. Said device is also provided with a lug, E, for the purpose of releasing the` cord or keeping the device in proper position .SOL
right hand, with the thumb pressing upon thev lug E, and pull toward you,and the clasp will move down the rope andallow the'bag to open. To close the bag, move the clasp alongthe cord without reference to the lug E. f In the modification shown in the accompanying drawings the clamping device has the bearing-faces upon the bottom instead of upon the sides.
"Having fully described Inyinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pattending therefrom, subst-antially as described,
whereby the cords passing through and under the opening in the; extension move the clamp- IOO ing device when a. strain is brought upon the to7 whereby the clamping device is held in the cords,substzmtia1]y as and for the purpose set ease, substantially as and for the purpose set 10 forth. y y forth.
2. In a line-fastener the Combination of a Y case having aslot, Wit aelalnping device conl ALBER D ,L PITNEY sistingof I(1J-block or lever having an apertured 1` fitnessesz portion extending therefrom, and provided l WM. B. MATTHEWS,

It is hereby. certified that in Letters Patent No. 297,158, granted April 22, 1884, upon the application of Albert L. Pitney, of Washington, District of Columbia, for un imn'error appears in the printed specifcaton ree 99, page 1, the word and should read or; and read with this corre t l .m m .w .I a MMP ,m :MM P www mfo/ mh... n lsel 0W .nuwe ww www@ .E m nfPmm Mn .msf :um mmon .mBC e du rtrJnTu www ,u grmEB .nHemwMWM .meme w O m C provement in Rope or Line QIasps,
