S. G. SWETT & A. MOOREARY.-
GRAPPLING DEVICE. N0. 26'9.971. Patented Jan. 2, 1883.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SULLIVAN C. SWETT AND ALBERTUS MOQREARILOF WASHINGTOII, D. C.
GRAPPLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,971, dated January 2, 1883. Application filed Tune 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SULLIVAN C. SWETT and A. MQGREARY, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grappling Devices or Implements; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification. This invention'relates to an improved grappling implement, by means of which articles of various descriptions may be grasped. held, and manipulated; and it is specially designed to furnish a means whereby articles can be conveniently handled in show-windows and other similar places. These objects we accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation showing portions of our improved device; Fig. 2, a detached view, showing a portion of our device in elevation; and Fig. 3,detached views of the grappling-points of the apparatus.
The letter A indicates a rod of any suitable description, and B a curved metallic finger attached to one end thereof.
' 0 indicates a similar finger, pivoted to the finger B at the point D, so as to swing fireely, as indicated. I
The letter D indicates a wire, line, or cord, attached at one end to the curved fingerG, and extending backward along the rod, passing 5 through staples 1 and 2, as indicated. Just at the rear of the forward staple, 2, a ring, 0, is
secured to the end of the line, and this ring has connectedv to it a link, cl, which hasa bent end, and is adapted to be fastened intoone of 0 a series of apertures in a plate, a, secured to the rod, in order-to hold the fingers of the grappler togetherwhen embracing any article.
The letter a indicates a spring secured to the pivot of the finger O, and connected to the said finger G and the finger B, as indi- 5 cated, so as to hold the two fingers normally or in aseparated position. The finger B is pointed, as indicated, and the finger G flattened, as shown, in order to adapt the device to grappleor pick up articles of variousshapes, the flattened end of the finger G permittingit to be placed under any flat or thin article until the opposite finger can beclamped upon it. The line D extends to near the hub of the rod, and at its rear is provided with a ring, I), the two rings b and 0 being designed to permit the device to be employed for different distances, as may be required.
Having described our invention, what we cl aim,,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, in a grappling device, of the fingers B and 0, arranged as described, one being flattened and the other pointed atits extremity, substantially as specified. 5
2. In combination with the pivoted finger of the grappler and spring, the line and ring, and the bent link adapted to be engaged by one of a series of apertures in a plate attached to the rod, substantially as specified. 7o
3. In combination with the rod-and the fiugers, constructed as described, the line and its rings, the link for holding the parts, and the spring, the whole arranged substantially as.
specified.
