'7 Claims.
This invention relates to attachments for typ writing machines for simultaneously producing a plurality of ink copies.
The invention has in view a multicopy attachment providing an ink impregnated supplemental ribbon which is adapted to be interposed between sheets of paper arranged in a typewriting machine with the supplemental ribbon disposed in parallel relation with the typewriter ribbon for producing ink impressions on the sheets cor responding to the type impression on the original copy.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multicopy attachment of said character which is constructed and arranged for swingin movement to dispose the supplemental ribbon in operative position in parallel relation with the typewriter ribbon or in an outof-the-way inoperative position at one side of the typewriter to permit of the convenient insertion of the sheets of pap in the typewriter.
Another object of the invention is t provide means for the supplemental ribbon which normally spaces the ribbon from the sheets of paper so as to prevent smudging contact of the ribbon therewith and which engages the paper only when the type strikes the typewriter ribbon.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for spreading the ribbon guide means apart with the movement of the attachment into the out-of-the-way inoperative position and for moving the said guide means into close relation with the swinging movement of the attachment into operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multicopy attachment of said character in which the supplemental ribbon is moved longitudinally within the guide means with the movement of the typewriter carriage from left to right for presenting different portions of the ribbon in position for producing the type impression on the paper.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically reversing the direction of movement of the supplemental ribbon in the guide means for winding one end thereof on a spool and unwinding the opposite end thereof from another spool and vice versa.
Another object of th invention is to provide ribbon guide meansin the form of channels having longitudinally extending rectangular openings in the opposite faces thereof for engagement of the supplemental ribbon against the sheets of paper for receiving the typ impression thereon.
Still another object of the invention is to Pro vide an attachment of said character which can be conveniently applied to and removed from any standard typewriting machine.
With the foregoing and other objects in view. reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is mus-- trated.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the attachment indicated generally by the reference character A is aflixed to a standard typewriter B which includes the usual frame l and keys operatively connected with the type bars |2 for striking movement of the keys against the ink ribbon l3. The ribbon I3 is trained through the ribbon carrier l4 and is disposed in front of the platen or roller l5 mounted for rotation on the reciprocatory carriage IS.
The attachment A consists of a head I8 having a rectangular frame l9 which includes a plurality of guide sheaths, two such sheaths 28 and 2| being shown in the present embodiment, in which two leads or courses 22 and 23 of a supplemental ribbonM are arranged respectively for longitudinal sliding'movement. The sheaths 28 and 2| are formed with longitudinally extending slots '26 and 21 in the opposite walls thereof which slots are of a width to receive the type impression as the type strikes the typewriter ribbon. The arrangement is such that a plurality of sheets of paper trained around the platen or roller will extend upwardly across the sheaths with one sheet disposed in front of each of the sheaths and one sheet at the rear of each of the sheaths so as to produce two ink copies on the forward faces of two of the sheets and two ink copies on the rear faces of two of the sheets in addition to the original copy or type impression produced by the typewriter ribbon.
The head l8 together with the rectangular frame I 9 is mounted for swinging movement from an inoperative out-of-the-way upwardly directed position as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings to an operative position in which the rectangular frame I9 is disposed longitudinally of the machine and the sheaths 2D and 2| are arranged between the type guide 25 and the platen or roller l5 as illustrated in full line in Fig. 2 of the drawings. For such purpose the head I8 is pivoted on a pivot pin 29 journaled in pintles 38 carried by a plate 3| which is secur d to the right hand end of the carriage frame 32 by screws 33 or equivalent fastening means.
Afiixed to the head I8 is a forwardly disposed housing 34 in which two gears 35 and 36 are mounted for rotation on stub shafts 31 and 38 secured at their inner nds in openings in the rear wall 39 of the housing with the hubs 48 and 4| respectively of the gears protruding through openings in a partition wall 42 and forming spools on which the ends of the supplemental ribbon 24 are wound. From the hub or spool 40 the lead or course 22of the supplemental ribbon is trained through a slot 41 in the side wall of the housing 34 and thence extends vertically downward and through a slot 48 in the extension 49 of the housing 34. The slot 48 is disposed at an angle of 45 to the horizontal to turn the lead or course 22 horizontally into the open end 44 of the sheath 23 secured to the extension 49. From the hub or spool 4|, the lead or course 23 of the supplemental ribbon 24 is trained through a slot 58 in a spring latch 52 pivoted to the housing on a pivot pin 53 and to which spring latch the right hand end of the sheath 2| is afiixed.
From the slot 58 the lead or course 23 extends through a slot 54 in said spring latch which is located at an angle of 45 to the horizontal so as to direct the lead or course horizontally into the open end 45 of the sheath 2|. The said lead or course extends longitudinally through the sheath 2| and is trained about the outer periphery of a vertically disposed post 56 where it continues with the lead or course 22.
In order to drive the gears 35 and 36 for winding the supplemental ribbon on the spools, a torque limiting reversing clutch is provided which includes spaced discs 51 and 58 having pinions 59 and 60 disposed in meshing engagement with said gears respectively and which discs are mounted for rotation on aligned shafts 8| and 62 formed integrally with oppositely disposed annular sections 63 and 64 of a roller 65 located between said discs. The shaft 62 is journaled for rotation in a bearing 66 in the head l8, while the shaft BI is a stub shaft'which projects through the partition wall 42 and through a cover plate 61 closing the outer face of the housing 34. A manipulating knob 68 is mounted on the protruding outer end of the shaft El and is provided with a bayonet slot 69 adapted to engage a pin 10 on said shaft for manually turning the same to wind the supplemental ribbon on the spools respectively.
The sections 63 and 64 of the roller 65 are secured together by screws 12 and have their confronting faces annularly recessed so as to provide confronting peripheral rims 13 and 14 on the sections respectively which rims are formed with diametrically disposed slots 15 and 16 defining rectangular openings 11 and T8 in the periphery of said roller 65. A bar 19 is mounted for reciprocatory movement between said sections with the reduced opposite end portions and 8| of the bar disposed in said openings and adapted to protrude through either one or the other thereof. The slots 15 extend laterally through the walls and peripheral rims of the sections 63 and 64, while the slots F6 are of a depth to extend partway through the rims of the sections whereby the shoulders 83 and 84 formed by the reduced end portions 80 and 8| of said bar are adapted to engage against the inner periphery of the rims laterally of the slots 16 to limit the outward reciprocatory movement of said bar.
The bar 19 is engaged by a leaf spring 85 which extends through a transverse slot 86 therein with the ends of the spring disposed in oppositely disposed V-shaped notches 81 in the inner periphery of the rim 13. The said spring is bowed so as to resiliently maintain the bar 19 with the outer ends thereof protruding through either one or the other of the openings 11 and 18 in the roller 65. When the spring is bowed in one direction the reduced end portion 83 projects through the opening 11 as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 6 of the drawings and when the spring is flexed to the broken line position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the reduced end 8| of the bar protrudes through the opening 18. When in the former position the spring is engaged against a stop pin 88 secured to the section 63 and when in the latter position, the spring abuts against a stop pin 89 carried by said section, the said stop pins and the notches 81 being disposed in alignment. The head [8 is adapted to be afiixed to any standard typewriting machine. For this purpose, the head includes a bracket I36 which is pivoted at its lower end on the pivot pin 29 between the pintles 30 as hereinbefore set forth. The shaft 62 is journaled in a tube I31 secured in a bore I38 in the split upper end I39 of said bracket which is provided with screws I40 for securing the tube in position therein. The ends of said tube are secured in split bosses MI and I42 formed respectively on the housings 34 and I02 by tightening the screws I43 therein. This spaces the housings 34 and I02 from the bracket I36 and permits of the use of different lengths of tube I31 for accommodatin different widths of typewriter carriages.
' The ends of the supplemental ribbon 24 are secured to the hubs or spools 40 and 4| respectively between a metallic sleeve I50 and a semicylindrical spring II. The hubs or spools 40 and 4| are formed with oppositely disposed notches I52 and the sleeve I50 and spring I5I are correspondingly bowed to engage in the notches I52. A cap I53 having prongs I54 frictionally engages in the notches I52 in overlying relation with the spring I5I for retaining the same in position.
Instead of the ribbon guides 20 and 2!, two ribbon guides I56 and I 51 may be provided as illustrated in Figs. 18 and 19 of the drawings which are fashioned from a flat metallic strip bent about the post 56 with one end of the strip affixed to the extension 49 of the housing 34 and the other end of the strip aflixed to the spring latch 52. The said guides I56 and I5! are formed with rectangular slots I58 and I59 opening medially thereth-rough substantially the length of the platen of the carriage and which slots are approximately the same width as the width of the supplemental ribbon 24 for slidably receiving the leads or courses 22 and 23 respectively. The ribbon guide I56 is provided with cleats I60 and I6I secured thereto at the opposite ends of the slots I58 to thereby provide guide openings I62 and I63 through which the lead or course 22 is trained to extend longitudinally of said slot I58. The said lead or course engages through the guide opening I63 and is trained peripherally about the post 56 and longitudinally of the slot I59 through a guide opening I64 at one end thereof and through a guide opening I65 at the opposite end thereof formed by cleats I66 and I61 secured to the outer face of the ribbon guide I 51. The lower lon itudinal edges of the slots I58 and I59 form ledges I58 and I69 on which the leads or courses 22 and 23 are supported in the slots I 58 and I59, the ribbon guides being of a thickness to prevent smudging or smearing contact of the paper against the supplemental ribbon when the paper is moved by turning of the platen relative to the ribbon guides as provided by the ribbon guides 20 and 2I The upper and lower longitudinal edges of the slots I58 and I59 retain the ribbon guides in position therein. The post 56 is secured at its opposite ends in a yoke I1I afiixed to the lower terminal of the outer end I I 1 of the frame I9.
In using the attachment, a plurality of sheets of paper fragmentarily illustrated as C, D, E, F, and G in Fig. 15 of the drawings are trained about the platen or roller of the typewriting machine with the upper ends thereof projecting above the platen or roller. The frame I9 is released from latched engagement with the spring latch II6 whereby the ribbon guides are spread apart as illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings. This permits of the insertion of the sheets D and E on opposite sides of the ribbon guide 2I and the sheets F and G on opposite sides of the ribbon guide 20 with the forward sheet C at the rear of the typewriter ribbon I3. When so arranged, the frame II9 is then moved to latched engagement with the spring latch H6 and the carriage together with the attachment shifted to the right in the usual manner for typing. When the sheets of paper are to be removed from the machine, the frame I9 is released from latched engagement with the spring latch H6 and rotated to its inoperative position where it is retained in upright relation by means of the stop lug I12 carried by the bracket I36 and adapted to engage against the underside of the pintles 30 for limiting the upward swinging movement of the head I0 and frame I9.
When only a single carbon copy is desired, a masking strip I13 of flexible material is removably secured to the forward ribbon guide in any desired manner such as by the pins I14 carried by the cleats I66 and I61 of the ribbon guide I51 which engage through openings in metallic ends I15 to which the masking strip I13 is secured at its ends. When the said masking strip is employed, the original sheet C is disposed at the rear of the typewriter ribbon I3 and a sheet of paper such as the sheet G is arranged at the rear of the rear-most guide 20 as shown in Fig. 15 or I 56 as shown in Fig. 19.
The foregoing description and mode of operation is illustrative of the particular form of the invention described a d various modifications may be made in the embodiments illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A multicopy attachment for typewriting machines including a support adapted to be affixed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine at one end thereof, a pair of horizontally aligned ribbon guides of a length to extend from one side of said carriage to the other and having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage, a frame to which said guides are afiixed at their ends, a guide carried by said frame at one end of said ribbon guides, a pair of ribbon spools rotatably mounted on said frame at the end thereof opposite said second mentioned guide adapted to receive thereon the e ds of a supplemental ribbon, said supplemental ribbon being trained through said aligned ribbon guides and around said last mentioned guide to provide two supplemental ribbon courses located at the rear of the typewriter ribbon for receiving on said supplemental ribbon courses through said openings the impression of the type against the typewriter ribbon, said frame being pivoted on said support for swinging movement of the frame from an operative position in which the aligned ribbon guides are disposed in parallel relation with the ribbon of the typewriting machine to an inoperative position in which the aligned ribbon guides are located in upright relation at one end of the carriage, means carried by said frame and the carriage for latching the frame in operative position, and means connecting one end of one of said 9 aligned ribbon guides with said frame for movement from adjacent relation with the other ribbon guide to a spread apart horizontally aligned relation for facilitating the insertion of paper therebetween when the frame is released from operative position.
2. A multicopy attachment for typewriting machines including a support adapted to be affixed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine, a frame affixed to said support and a pair of horizontally aligned ribbon guides of a length to extend from one side of the carriage to the other and affixed at their ends to said frame and having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage, a post aflixed to said frame and located at one end of said guides, a pair of ribbon spools rotatably mounted on said frame at the end thereof opposite said post adapted to receive thereon the ends of a supplemental ribbon, said supplemental ribbon extending longitudinally through the openings in said ribbon guides and around said post to provide two supplemental ribbon courses located at the rear of the typewriter ribbon and wholly within said openings for receiving on said supplemental ribbon courses in said openings the impression of the type against the typewriter ribbon, and means rotating either one or the other of said spools with the movement of the carriage from left to right for winding the supplemental ribbon thereon and moving said ribbon in one direction in one of the guides and in the other direction in the other guide.

A multicopy attachment for typewriting machines including a support afiixed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine at one end thereof, a rectangular shaped frame including a head at one end thereof, a depending bar at the opposite end, a top bar connecting the upper end of the head and the depending bar and a pair of horizontally aligned ribbon guides affixed at their ends to the lower end of said head and depending bar and having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage adapted to receive a supplemental ribbon extending longitudinally through the openings in said guides and around one end thereof to provide two supplemental ribbon courses located wholly within said openings for receiving thereon in said openings the impression of th type against th typewriter ribbon, said head being pivoted on said support for swinging movement of the frame from an inoperative upright position at one end of the carriage to an operative position in which the guides extend longitudinally of the carriage and with the openings in the guides arranged at the striking position of the type of the machine, and means carried by said depending bar and the carriage for latching the frame in operative position.

A multicopy attachment for typewriting machines including a support affixed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine at one end thereof, a rectangular shaped frame including a head at one end thereof, a depending bar at the opposite end, a top bar connecting the upper end of the head and the depending bar and a pair of horizontally aligned ribbon guides of a length to extend from one side of said carriage to the other and affixed at their ends to the lower end of said head and depending bar and having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage adapted to receive a supplemental ribbon extending longitudinally through the openings in said guides and around one end thereof to provide two supplemental ribbon courses for receiving thereon in said openings the impression of the type against the typewriter ribbon, said head being pivoted on said support for swinging movement of the frame from an inoperative upright position at one end of the carriage to an operative position in which the guides extend longitudinally of the carriage and with the openings in the guides arranged at the striking position of the type of the machine, and means carried by said frame for tensioning the guides to render the same taut.
5, A multicopy attachment for typewriting machines including a support affixed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine at one end thereof, a rectangular shaped frame including a head at one end thereof, a depending bar at the opposite end, a top bar connecting the upper end of the head and the depending bar and a pair of horizontally aligned metallic ribbon guides of a length to extend from one side of the carriage to the other affixed at their ends to the lower end of said head and depending bar and having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage, a guide carried by the frame at one end of said metallic ribbon guides, a pair of ribbon spools rotatably mounted on said head opposite said second mentioned guide adapted to receive thereon the ends of the supplemental ribbon, said supplemental ribbon being trained through said metallic ribbon guides and around said last mentioned guide to provide two supplemental ribbon courses located at the rear of the typewriter ribbon for receiving on said supplemental ribbon courses through said openings the impression of the type against the typewriter ribbon, said head being pivoted on said support for swinging movement of the frame from an operative position in which the metallic ribbon guides are disposed in parallel relation with the typewriter ribbon to an inoperative position in which the metallic ribbon guides are located in upright relation at one end of the carriage, means carried by the depending bar and the carriage for latching the frame in operative position, and pivotal latch means on said head connecting one end of one of said ribbon guides with said head for movement from adjacent relation with the other ribbon guide to a spread apart horizontally aligned relation for facilitating the insertion of paper therebetween when the frame is released from operative position.

In a typewriting machine, a frame aflixed to the reciprocatory carriage thereof, said frame having a pair of horizontally aligned flat bars providing ribbon guides of a length to extend from one end of the carriage to the other and aifixed at their ends to said frame, said bars having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage, said openings being of a height to receive a supplemental ribbon extending longitudinally through the openings in said bars and the bottom edges of the bars defined by the openings being of flat formation for engagement of the lower edge of the supplemental ribbon thereon, and means at the ends f said bars for guiding the supplemental ribbon in and out of said longitudinally extending openings in the bars.
'7, In a typewriting machine, a rectangular shaped frame including a head at one end thereof amxed to the reciprocatory carriage of the machine, a depending bar at the opposite end, a top bar connecting the upper end of the head and depending bar and a pair of horizontally aligned flat bars providing ribbon guides of a length to extend from one end of the carriage to the other and affixed at their ends to the lower end of said head and depending bar, said bars having aligned horizontally disposed openings extending longitudinally thereof substantially the length of the platen of the carriage to receive a supplemental ribbon extending longitudinally of the openings in said guides and around one end thereof to provide two supplemental ribbon courses for receiving thereon in said openings the impression of the type of the machine.
