HYDRAULIC MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,133, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 23, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES THOMAS, of Catasauqua, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydraulic Motors, of which the following is a specification.
Thefigure is a vertical section of my hydraulic ram.
The object of this invention is to furnish hydraulic rams which shall be so constructed that they may be us d to deliver power.
The invention co ists in the combination of a secondary piston and cylinder with the water-chamber of the ram, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the pipe through which the water is carried to the chamber B. O is the discharge-opening through which the water escapes intermittently as the valve D opens and closes. The inner part of the chamber B opens into a cylinder, E, in which is the piston or plunger G.
With this construction, as the water moves inward through the pipe A and chamber B its momentum closes the valve D and forces the piston or plunger G up through the cylin der E. When the water from the inlet-pipe A has expended its momentum it comes to rest and the valve D drops and opens, and allows the water in the chamber B to flow out and the piston G to drop, and piston G is again ready to be forced up by the momentum of the moving column of Water upon the closing of the valve D. The power imparted to the piston G is conveyed or delivered by the rod F.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, in a hydraulic motor, of the chamber B, having the discharge-opening O, the valve D, and the piston Gr, arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specifled.
