UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
ASHER E. MORRIS, OF JANESVILLE, MINNESOTA.
SPR|NG.DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOR HORSE-POWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,097, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed January 17, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER E. MORRIS, of Janesville, Waseca county, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Draft Attachments for Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to connect the draft with the sweeps of horse-powers in such a way that both the teams and the machines will be protected from jerk or strain should there be a sudden application of power.
The invention consists in connecting the draw-chain with the sweep by an interposed spring, so that any sudden application of.
power may be taken up by the elasticity of the spring and gradually communicated to the machine, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the sweep of the horse-power. To the upper side of the outer end of the sweep A is pivoted a pulley, B,around which passes a chain, 0. The draft is applied to the outer end of the chain 0, and to its inner end is attached the end of a spiral or other suitable spring, D. The other end of the spring D is attached to the sweep A by means of an eyebolt or other suitable connection.
With this construction, when draft is first applied to the power, or-should any one of the teams give a sudden jerk, the spring D will yield, and will thus protect both the team and the machine from shock or strain.
This construction also protects the other teams from the jerk should any team start forward suddenly, as the pull will first effect the spring with which that particular team is connected, and will then gradually affect the machine, the other teams feeling only a slight decrease in the resistance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a horse-power, the combination, with the sweep A and the draw-chain O, of the pulley B and spring D, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the teams and the machine are protected against any sudden jerk, as set forth.
ASHER EMMIT MORRIS.
