My invention relates to cigar or cigarette holders, and more particularly to such holders whereby it is not only possible Yto eject the butt oi said cigar or cigarette substantially instantly from 5 said holders, but said' butt may be snuffed out in a plurality of ways.

It accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of cigar or cigarette holder comprising a pair of relatively movable members, one of which may be a mouth piece tube, one end of which maybe positioned in the other of said members, which other member may be provided with means for holding a cigar or cigarette, there being means associated with both of said members, which, when said members are relatively moved, will cause said members to -Coact so lthat a momentum will be generated thereby to the end that the butt of said cigar or cigarette will be substantially instantly ejected Vfrom said holder.

It is also within the province of my invention to provide my novel form of holder with a means f whereby the butt of a cigar or cigarette may be snuied out in a plurality of ways, said means preferably comprising a snuff-'out chamber in said holder surrounding the end of the cigar or cigarette positioned in said holder so that fire hazards caused by careless smokers will be re- -duced to a minimum.

A still lfurther object of my invention is to provide an0vel process or method for ejecting the buttofva cigar or cigarette from a holder which consists in generating a momentum in said holder 'fand imparting said momentum to said butt, whereby said butt may be substantially instantly ejected from said holder.

The above and further objects and advantages of my invention, as will hereinafter-more -fully appear, I attain by the processand method and device described in thevspecication andvillustrated on the drawing, forming a part of my application. Reference is had tothev accompanying drawing, in which similar reference. characters denote similar parts. In the drawing,

' Describing my invention more in detail, I pro- Vide a suitable holder or body I, which may be of any preferred shape or size and may be constructed of any suitable material, such as wood, fibre, metal or the like, as in practice preferred or needed, which body may have formed therein a'set of chambers in any way in practice pre- Iferred, the purpose of which will presently be described.

` Positioned within that end of the body or holder I which receives the end of the cigar or cigarette to be held is a chamber 2, which is the snuff-out v20 chamber, and which functions as such when the cigar or cigarette has been smoked to a butt, the smoke of the still lighted butt entering said chamber and surrounding said butt so that air circulation through said butt is no longer possible, and thus automatically causing said butt to be extinguished without any re hazard usually caused by careless smokers.

The snuf`f-out chamber 2 also has other functions and advantages, it being possible to tamp 30 the lighted butt of the cigar or cigarette therein, crushing the same, and thereby causing said butt to be extinguished in said chamber.

f Moreover, the butt may be reversed, the lighted end positioned in the body or holder I, and in said chamber, and either automatically allowed tofbe snut'ed out by reason of the shutting off of` air circulation through the butt, or said reversed butt may be tamped out in said chamber as also was just explained. 40

Preferably concentric with the snuff-out chamber 2 is another chamber 3, which may be tapered to facilitate the holding of the cigar or cigarette within the holder or body I, it being noted that the outer ,end of said chamber 3 is of smaller diameter yor size than that of the chamber 2, a shoulder or abutment 9 being thus provided which .materially assists in the snuffng out of the butt ,"asvhereinb'efore described. 50

`As will be noted in Figs. 2 and 3, the body or` holder I is provided with a reduced bore or guide ,4, also preferably concentric with and in alignment. with lthe tapered cigar or cigarette holding `chamber', 3, which reduced vbore or guide defines 55 a shoulder, stop, or abutment 8' for a purpose also presently to be described.

The body or holder I hasY associated therewith a tubular member I of anyrpreferred size, length, and constructed oi any suitable material as in practice preferred, 'which member is adapted for relative movement with the member, body, or holder I, said tubular member being jprcyided a preferably reduced portion or guide II, adapted for sliding or reciprocating movement in the menber, body or holder being thus movable relatively with respect tothe member, body or holder I, a ledgeLY shoulder or stop I 1, being thus defined on said member |10. The cored portion or through passage of the tubular number I is indicated by the numeral 24.

YPreferably surrounding the reduced portion or guide I I isn a helical spring or resilient means I6, abutting at oneend the shoulder or stop i1 and at the other end the shoulder stop 8, said spring or resilient means being adapted to oppose the relative movement ofthe members I and I0 -and for reasons mere particularly to be explained.

When sai-d cigar or cigarette has been smoked to its butt, as seen in Fig. 3, and it is desired to eject same, the members I and Ill are moved relatively with respect to each other, either by depressing the end or lip I9 with respect to the member IIJ, with thumb and finger, or otherwise,

Should it be desired to snuff out the butt, it may simply lhe allowed to remain within the snuiout cha'nber 2, where the encircling smole of the butt in said chamber shuts off circulatie'n of air 'throughsaid butt, extinguishing the same very readily.

If desired, the snuiling outjmay be accom- Yplished by simply tamping and/or compressing f the lighted butt within the snuff-out chamber 2, against any surface encountered in practice, crushing said butt within the snuff-out chamber` 2, after' which said butt may be ejected as explained.

Further, if preferred, the butt may begreversed, positioning its lighted end within the chamber 2, whereupon it may be automatipally extinguished therein, and/or by tarriping and crushing, after which said extinguished butt may be ejected Vas desired. Y

ItV will thus be seen that I have provided a novel form pf cigar or cigarette holder, simple and highly-.eiicent in construction and operation and which is fully Ycapable of producing the results intended.y z l In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention tegetherwith the device and method or processr which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device and method shown and 'described are only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and Ways. I claim as my invention: l.

1. In a device of the class described, a body provided With a cigarette holding chamber in combination with a butt ejection shoulder and a cylindrical snuff-out chamber of larger crosssectional area than saidrholding chamber, the juncture of said holding chamber and said snuffout chamber dening ,said shoulder, means positioned in said body to move a cigarettebutt into said snuff-out chamber and contact with said shoulder, the limit of movementY of said means corresponding to the distance between said shoulder and said means when in extended relation, means to generate a movement of said`body,said rst means being adapted to stop said movement, whereby said ejection shoulder imparts said generated movement in the form of momentum to said butt to automatically eject the same.

2. In a cigarette holder a pair of relatively movable members, a holding chamber and a cylindri-` cal snui-out chamber of larger cross-sectional area. dening a shoulder therebetween, means positioned in said holding chamber to move a cigarette from said holding chamber to said snuout chamber and in contact with said shoulder, means positioned between said members opposing relative movement, a circular groove formed on the body of one of said members providing a finger-grip, thereby facilitating the relative movement of said members for cigarette ejection, the limit of movement of said members corresponding to the distance between said shoulder and said rst means when in extended relation, whereby manual movement of one member relative to the other member will cause the cigarette to move out of the holding chamber and into the snuff-out chamber in sliding engagement with said shoulder and release of said member will cause ejection of the cigarette from the snuff-cut chamber.

3. In a device of the class described, a tubular body comprising a cylindrical cigarette snuff-out chamber in conjunctional alignment with a cigarette holding chamber defining a larger chamber in front of said holding chamber providing a shoulder therebetween, whereby said snuff-out chamber provides sucient air-space enclosure around a cigarette butt end when smoking same to control air circulation or provide combustion control before said butt burns into said holding chamber, eliminating the charring and burning of said holding chamber when made of nonmetallic material.

4. In combination, a pair of relatively movable members comprising a body and a tubular mouthpiece slidably mounted together, a cigarette holding chamber in conjunctional alignment with a cylindrical snuff-out chamber in said body, means mounted on said mouth-piece in said holding chamber to move a burning cigarette butt out of said holding chamber into said snuff-out chamber, whereby in using any resistant surface to manually crush said burning butt in said snuff-out chamber said means to move said butt out of said holding chamber co-acts with said snui-out chamber in shutting off suflicient air circulation for further combustion, automatically extinguishing same.
