Description
13. 11 JEWETT.
Plow.
No. 976; Patented Feb. 12, 184 1. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJN. F. JEWETTJOF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANNER 0F CONSTRUCTING PLOWS BY ATTACHING THE MOLD-BOARD AND SHETH 0R CAST-IRON STANDARD TOGETHER BY MEANS OF RIYETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1,976, dated February 12, 1841.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JEWETT, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Carey Plow; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical section, showing the rivets that fasten the mold-board and landside together. Fig. 2 is a view of the moldboard and cutter. Fig. 3 is a view of the landside; Fig. 4, view of the bottom of the plow.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the figures.
The piece marked A is called the moldboard, whichin its curvature is shaped like other plows. It is cut out of boiler or slab iron varying in thickness from three-sixteenths to five-sixteenths of an inch, according to the size of the plow, and is made fast to the sheth by means of rivets B, varying in number from two to five, arranged on the dotted line marked E, which rivets are cast fast in the sheth marked D. i
The piece marked B is a part of the share, which is made in the usual manner of band iron or steel, varying in width and thickness, as may be required, and is welded on the front edge of the vertical piece marked 0, which makes the balance of the entire share and forms part of the cutter and part of the landside, and is made of tire-iron, varyingin width and thickness, according to the size of the plow.
The piece marked D D is the sheth and landside, which are made of cast-iron and are cast together. A seat is cast in this sheth and landside where the piece marked 0 fits in,
which brings the surface of the piece marked 0 next the land even with the piece marked D D,and is fastened to them by means of screwbolts, as represented in the drawings.
The pins forming the rivets R, which fasten the mold-board A to the sheth D, are made of wrought-iron, and are cast into the sheth, so that the mold-board being made with corresponding apertures to admit said pins and the mold-board being placed over said pins, and these being riveted in a proper manner, securely fasten the mold-board and sheth together.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent, consists 1n- The before-described manner of fastening together the mold-board and sheth.
BENJN. F. JEWETT.
