Description
T. W. JOHNSON & I. N. CHERRY.
ELECTRO-VAPOR BATH.
No.184,528. Patented Nov.Z1 ,1876.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcH.
THOMAS W. JoHNsoN AND J. NATHANIEL CHERRY, 0F, KEOKUK, IowA.
IMPROVEMENT m ELEcTRoevAPoR BATHS. v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,528, dated November 21, 1876; application filed 5 June 30, 1876.
' Figure I is a vertical section of the apparatus. Figs. II and III are details of partsof same. This invention consists in an improved apparatus for applying plain and medicated vapor-baths with electricity as a remedial agent, and in various details in the same.
The box A is arranged to contain the ap- I paratus. It has a lid, B, which is hinged to turn back, more or less, to form one side of the vapor chamber and a rest for the person while being treated. It closes over the box over the other parts for portability. A seat, 0, is hinged to the lid B, and has a leg, D, hinged to hold it atany inclination in use. An insulated'conductor, G, is led to the seat to apply electricity to it, as desired.
Strips are added around three sides of the top of box A to hold the edges of the flexible cover E. This is made of oiled muslin. It has a frame of bows, F H, which are pivoted at G to a part which has strips attached to the end of the box by screws, so as to be readily taken off and put on, as required. The cover and bows fold down into the box for portability, and expand to form and enclose the vapor-chamber for use.
The bow H is arranged to rest against the top B, to which it is held by turning-buttons. This how is formedof five parts. The sides are tubes. Curved rods fit into the ends of these, and slide up and down, with friction,
to adjust to different persons. The central part is also tubular, fitting onto the ends'of these rods, bent inward, so asto turn on them. It is bent into a secondary bow, H,
to fit around the neck, and turns to adjust it self. A cape, I, is attached to the cover B to be drawn around the neck securely.
One or more short sleeves, K, are set into the cover E to admit the arm of the operator in treating. Their ends are made elastic and contracting to keep closed. A thermometer,
K, is set in the cover, so as to show outside,
to regulate the temperature.
Two parallel cushions, L, for the back are 1 nect with the spine, is arranged on this strip,
so as to be readily moved and held at any point, as desired. 'A cushion, O, is arranged for the head. I
Vapor is introduced from a boiler by pipe P, arranged to be turned in its bearings by suitable devices outside and inside the box. This pipe in the box connects with two outlet-pipes, P 1*, and is arranged so that, when turned one way, it connects with pipe 1?, and when turned the other way, with pipe B. The pipe P discharges under the footbath B, so as to heat it and temper the heat of the steam before coming in contact with the person. When the foot-bath is hot enough the pipe P is turned, and the steam discharges backward P directly in the chamber. The
foot-bath R rests on adjustable supports B, V
and can slide back and forth, as required. A conductor, S, of electricity, connects with the foot-bath for treatment when desired.
We claim- 1. The adjustable hinged neck-yoke, in com-. bination with a closed chamber and vaporbath apparatus, substantially as set forth.
2. The adjustable shoulder-cover and neckyoke, arranged to suit persons of different lengths, in combination with vaporbathing apparatus and a closed chamber, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the vapor-bathing chamber, the adjustable bed B, the steam inlet, and the movable conductors of electricity, arranged substantially as set forth.
4. The vapor-bathin g chamber, with flexible cover E, and adjustable bed B, in combination with separate conductors of electricity to be applied within the bathingchamber, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the cushions L, the
adjustable conductor N, the flexible cover E,
and steam-inlet P, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the box A with the flexible-cover E and hingeii folding frame, arranged to fold up into the box, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of an inclosigg-eover,
O, the hand-holes, with elastic-sleeves K, arranged toadmit the band and retain the steam, and a steam inlet', P, substantially as setvforth.
8. In combination with a vapor-bath, the" and separately,-in combination with a vaporbathing apparatus and a -foot bath, substanbath chamber, the foot-bathand the vapor-- inlet, arranged to heatthe foot-bath by opening under it, substantially as set forth.
