rlhis invention relates to improvements in identifica-tien devices, and has particular reference to a method of identifying a fabric and to a folder to which the swatch of said fabric is attached.

t is well known, in the textile industries, that unscrupulous dealers have produced and disposed of fabrics and designs thereof of infe 1ior qualities in imitation of the products of high grade manufacturers to the detriment not only of .said manufacturers, but also ofthe public at large. For example, vast quantities of goods are represented and seid as being nnported weich are, as a matter of fact, of inferior grade and domestic origin.

An object of the present invention is to overcome the difficulties arising from the above mentioned practice by providing an identification device which may be attached to a fabric and which will enable the purchaser of said fabric' to determine whether the same is of the quality and design represented by the vendor.

Another object is to provide an identification device in the form of a folder in which ya sample or swatch may be secured in such manner as to avoid surreptitious removal thereof and the substitution of another swatch without detection.

rThe above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying' drawing", which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.

The device, which in its preferred embodiment, is shown in the form of a folder made from a single sheet of any suitable material, such heavy paper or the like. rlhe sheet or body portion is scored transversely intermediate its ends as at 6 to provide the back member 7 and front member 8, the latter be- 'ing` foldable over upon the back member when the folder is closed, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. transversely and adjacent its free end, as indicated at 9, to provide a flap 10 foldable upon the back member and adapted to receive between the same and said member' an edge or end portion of a swatch or sample 11.

Means are provided for securely fastening the swatch 11 to the baclt member and flap and this means is preferably in the form of fastening devices each of which consists of a base plate l2 having laterally extending prongs or spurs 13 at the ends thereof. In practice each plate 12 is engaged with the outer surface of the bacl; member 7 and the prongs 13 are caused to penetrate said back member, the swatch 11 and the flap 10. A securing plate 14 having a pair of slots 15 adjacent each end is then engaged with the outer surface of the flap 10 with the prongs projecting through certain of said slot-s. 'lhen by any suitable means the extremities f the prongs are bent in a reverse direction with respect to the remainder of the prongs with said extremities projecting into the adjacent slots 15, as clearly shown in Figure 5, thus locking the plates 12 and 14 together and at the same time firmly securing the swatch to the folder. ln order to prevent surreptitious removal of the swatch from the folder, without detection, the invention further provides a sealing strip 1G made of any suitable material andv printed or engraved with an inlr which will run or blur upon the application of moisture thereto. This strip 16 is pasted or rotherwise firmly secured to the flap 10 in such manner as to cover the plates 14 and the extremities of the prongs 13, as clearly indicated in Figures 1 ant 3. in this manner tampering with the prongs 13 in an att mapty to remove the fastening devices is prevented unless the sealing trip is removed or defaced, and should it be attempted to displace said strip by the application of moisture this will immediately become evident due to the particular kind of ink with which the strip is printed. 1t will thus be apparent that from this construction and manner of securing and sealing the swatch within the folder', it will be practically impossible to fraudulently remove the swatch from the folder and substitute another swatch therefor, without detection.

The side edges of the bach member 7 are provided with flaps 1?' which are foldable inwardly upon the adjacent portions of the swatch 11 with the ends of said flaps adjacent the Hap 10 freely engaged beneath the latter so as to retain the flaps 17 in their folded position. WV hen the folder is closed the free end of the front memberl 8 is inserted between the'free edge of th'e'iapv l0' and the flaps 17'. In this'irnanner the latter flaps will space the major portion of the outer surface of the swatch 1l from the inner surface of the front member or cover 8 and thereby prevent the latter from rubbingl off the pile or nap of the fabric, thus-insuringthat the swatch Wiil at all times lhave the appearance of the original fabric of which the swatch is a sample.
