Description

1. cARsuN'. Carriage Doors.

Fltrm WITNEEEES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.,
JAMES OAESON, OE BUFFALO, NEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-DOCRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,440, dated November 11, 1873; application filed September 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CARSON, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements 1nV GarriageDoors, of which the follow-` ing is a specication: A
This invention relates to the doors of vehicles the tops of which separate in the center, such as landaus, Sto., that can be converted into either open or closed carriages; and the invention consists in the construction of the p independent sliding frames or supports for the "piece, d, constructed as Shown, and pivoted, at
e, near the top. This allows it to swing out a little way, the back edge being slightly rounded or beveled near the top for that purpose, and permitting it to Stand out at just the angle required. A dat piece or rim, f, sits on the outer piece d, against which the glass rests when raised, and which also throws oif rain, prewhen the carriage is thrown Open, as repre-` sented in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The top of the piece D is formed into a hooked cap, g, so as to Sit over the opening into which the supports slide, and by which it can wbe lifted up and the swinging part d thrown out over the edge h,
as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where it stands of itself until folded, as in Fig. 3, ready to drop nto the socket when the carriage-topis thrown ack.
This makes a very simple glass support for doors of carriages, such as landaus, coaches, landaulettes, broughams, &c., which are constructed to be either Open or closed.
I claim- The pivoted Supplemental pieces d, having the protecting-strips f, in combination with the supports D D, having the hooked ends g, combined to operate Substantially as and for the purpose specified. g
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: JAMES CARSON.
J. R. DRAKE, T. H. FARSONS.
